      Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a "based on" movie, so 🤷‍♂️ it's not a documentary. It being so inaccurate gave Ohrr the chance to write his autobiography and it not be overlooked by people who saw the movie🤷‍♂️

      @nathanmcdowell4731 I suppose you're correct in the sense that it all boils down to semantics, though to be fair, they didn't claim that Leatherface's real name was Ed. It was probably more showing the real people at the end that gave the impression that it was true enough that all involved signed off on their portrayals.
      But I also agree that them claiming for it to be true gave Michael a great opportunity to tell his side of what happened. Also, it showed that these kinds of movies shouldn't just be accepted at face value as absolute fact. Though he could've done that anyway if they had presented it as fiction, then maybe he would not have felt so used by them.

      @@nathanmcdowell4731Weirdly, the 1974 Texas Chainsaw is one of the most accurate film adaptions of Ed Gein's story imo. That's not a biopic, I mean. It's the only one -- that I know of -- that mentioned he was a grave robber as well as a serial killer, and also that he had been abused during his childhood. The rest of it is very sensationalized (for obvious reasons).

      It’s not like the movie was ever presented as a documentary. Michael knew ahead of time that changes and embellishments were made to keep the movie interesting. Michael taking them to court now…makes no sense. If it hasn’t been thrown out already or ruled in favor of the Tuohy’s, it will be. Michael did receive his share of the proceeds. It was not just given to their biological children which is ridiculous. Seems perhaps Michael is looking for more money and took an unfortunate turn to get it. All of the coaches that have worked with Michael, teachers, etc have all said the Tuohys have always loved that kid and tried to give him a great life…which he ended up playing for the NFL so I’d say they succeeded. Sean Tuoghy owned over 115 franchises and has a net worth of $100 mil. He doesn’t need Michale’s money. He made a ton of it before Michael came along, and a ton of it after.

    "In his 2012 book, I Beat the Odds: From Homelessness, to the Blind Side, and Beyond, Oher wrote, "I felt like it [the movie] portrayed me as dumb instead of as a kid who had never had consistent academic instruction and ended up thriving once he got it." The film's claim that he didn't understand football was another point of irritation for Oher. When talking about watching his adoptive family teach him, he said, "No, that's not me at all! I've been studying-really studying-the game since I was a kid!" - Wikipedia

    • @Br0nto5aurus
      @Br0nto5aurus Před 5 měsíci +11

      It's odd that Oher felt the movie portrayed him as stupid, rather than lacking consistent instruction when "he has no idea how to learn in a classroom, but Michael Oher is not stupid," is a direct quote from the movie. Also, as someone who barely understands football, I thought he just wasn't used to being on an organized team and running the drills they do at that school, not that he didn't know how to play the game. I wish more true story movies were something the people who lived them were proud of.

      @@lich109 No, he constructed a fantasy past where he DIDN'T have an IQ of 80.... where he could read and write as well as all the other students... where he knew all about football and was skilled at it in his junior year. He constantly lies about his past and has concocted this BS narrative were he was always amazing at everything and all these people weren't helping him... they were just his cheering section. Michael Oher has never bashed the Blind Side book the way he does the movie.... and the movie portrays things almost exactly as they are written in the Blind Side book.
      _"But that’s not what most interested his intelligence testers. Michael Oher had been tested, and more than once, as a child. Those tests had pegged his IQ at 80."_
      His teachers:
      _"The next day, Ms. Beasley took him into a room and sat down beside him, test in hand. By now she, like the other teachers, knew about his academic record. She had taught at Briarcrest for twenty-one years-and had entire classrooms of children with learning disabilities-and had never experienced a student so seemingly hopeless. “I had never encountered anybody at Michael’s reading and comprehension level,” she said. "His brain did not appear to contain any sort of intellect."_
      _“And Michael didn’t say a thing. His head was always down. He kept his head down and his mouth shut.” And she thought: Oh Lord what have we gotten ourselves into?_
      They all describe him the same way. Barely speaking, looking down at his feet constantly and not responding to direct questions. His Briarcrest teachers all claim he had the reading skills of an elementary school child and he would hand in tests blank. By chance the one teacher realized that he would do better if she READ the test to him, and that's when he began to improve. Then there are the quotes from his coaches:
      _"The problem there, at first, resembled his problems in the classroom. He had no foundation, no idea what he was meant to do as a member of a team. He said he had played football his freshman year at Westwood, but there was no sign of it in his performance._ _When Freeze saw how fast he could move, he pegged him as a defensive tackle. And so for the first six games of the 2003 season, he played defense. He wasn’t any worse than his replacement, but he wasn’t much better either._ _... But during the games he seemed confused. When he wasn’t confused, he was reluctant. Passive, almost. This was the last thing Freeze expected."_
      Since he's not very good at defense, they then switch him to offense and the book quotes offensive line coach Tim Long...
      _"Long was awed by Michael Oher’s raw ability immediately. “When I first saw him,” he says, “I thought, This guy is going to make us all famous.” But then he coached him in the final games of his junior year, after Michael was moved to right tackle on the offensive line, and Long wondered why he wasn’t a better player. One game, he pulled Michael out and sat him on the bench because he thought the team was better off playing another guy."_
      Normally, to get the truth about someone's past... the best person to ask is the person themselves. Not in this case.

    In August 2023, Michael filed a lawsuit in Memphis - stating that the main premise of the story is a lie. He discovered in Feb 2023 that was never "adopted" but rather placed in a conservatorship - where the Tuohys gained legal rights to do business deals using his name - and is not actually a member of the family. He claims that they basically stole $300 million. (Just because the film made $300 million doesn't mean that is their portion - so I think there may be some confusion... or more information that I am unaware of (obviously.))
    Anyway the story is currently in a very sad chapter - for what was (and is) such a sweet story and hopeful movie. If the movie is any indication, I hope they can work out their differences.

    • @chaddaniel254
      @chaddaniel254 Před 5 měsíci +16

      The lawsuit is all bunk. In a biography Michael wrote more than a decade earlier, he talks about how it was a conservatorship. In short he was fully aware of it the entire time. Also, the movie was based on the a book, and so the author of the book is who made the bulk of the royalties from the movie, not the Tuohys. Around $432,000 was paid to the Tuohys between the book and the movie, of which $138,000 was paid to Michael.

Each season, my brother and I used to quiz each other all the time to help memorize our new plays. Neither one of us would consider that "teaching us how to play football". The film also shows Leigh Anne giving him a 70 second motivational talk about having a protective mindset. Were they helping him with his stance, footwork, leverage, pass blocking, run blocking, driving/double-teaming? NO. The movie did NOT paint him as learning everything about football from the Tuohys. So strange what a classic this became when most of the events in this movie were completely fabricated. They didn't teach him anything about football, he was already a highly scouted and popular D1 prospect and already top 5 in the state I believe when they met him. He wasn't dumb or near illiterate like they portray him as, apparently this portrayal really hurt him for years after this came out because fans would approach him as if he had a severe learning/mental disability. He was never afraid of white people. They didn't adopt him, they tricked him into a conservatorship when he was already an adult and took a ton of his pro football earnings when they were already well off before him. In fact they had him give away the rights to his lifestory and only the family profitted off of this movie.
    This movie was the epitome of the "white woman appears and fixes black kids" genre. But I also think this is what thankfully killed it, it was so tropey there was no possible way to be more white savior than it.

      If you look at the court filings... they didn't take any of his football money, the conservatorship was set up when Michael was already a legal adult, he says he thought he was legally adopted. It doesn't, it's gives they legal rights as family (like medical decisions) without adoption. The only reason the conservatorship was questioned was because they were supposed to do annual accountings, but there was no activity so they didn't. The only money being questioned was the money from the movie. Which was minimal. They sold the story to an author who wrote a book. They received a few hundred grand for the rights to the story. The author sold the rights to make it a movie. Also, the family was already loaded. Like over 100M loaded. When Michael filed the lawsuit he was no longer playing football and he'd spend a fair portion of the football money. When he remarried (not sure of how it came up) the details of adoption came up... Michael found out he wasn't adopted. Michael tried to get money from the family or he'd "go to the press" with his story. The let him go to the press. Michael not being adopted give him no legal claim to inheritance. No on is innocent in this story.

    The story of Michael Oher is still going on. He is suing the family and movie people now. Some was accurate but he was always annoyed that they made out like he couldn't play football and they taught him when in reality by middle school he was already a 3 or 4 sport beast. That was Hollywood bs drama that ticked him off. Regardless, he had a great career with the Ravens. But now that football is done, he seems to be going after them for a lot of royalties owed to him that the family collected. Not sure of details, just passing on the gist of what I heard. It's a great movie regardless. Bullock showed a lot of subtle acting chops in this.

    I can see why this movie irks Michael. So much pity is cringey. Plus, they portrayed the neighborhood guys as criminals. I’m sure that didn’t go over well.

      Michael Oher calls the the guys from his neighborhood criminals in his OWN book. And out of all the kids playing D1 football for NCAA colleges today, only 1.6% of them will make it to the NFL. Are you saying that the Tuohys spent all that money on him thinking that they were going to make money from him later? That "investment" had a 98.4% chance of failure.

    Inaccuracies:
    - The film shows a game where Oher blocks a kid completely off the field, over the track, up off his feet and over a WALL. IRL it was a scrimmage and all he did was block him all the way over the sidelines and into the bench. He almost started a full-team rumble.
    - The film shows Oher jacking up this gang member who just showed him his GUN, and then he slams other gang members who are also presumed to be armed. IRL he chased a teammate *HALF HIS SIZE* all over Ole Miss campus, trashed the smaller guy in a room full of tutors and their families.... knocking some little white child over and splitting his head on the floor. When he saw this child bleeding and realized what he had done.... he ran away and hid.
    - The film shows this scene with Oher and the Tuohys around the dining room table where they talk about them becoming his legal guardians in this lovey-dovey "we want you to be part of our family" way. In the Blind Side book it says they explained to him that if he was still thinking about going to Ole Miss, they would have to become his legal guardians to satisfy the NCAA. So he apparently knew that if he picked Tennessee, LSU or any college except Ole Miss, they would have never done the conservatorship and he just would have gone on living with them.
    Michael Oher never complains about the first 2 "fake scenes" because Hollywood's lies make him look like a badass.
    He never complains about the dining room table "legal guardians" scene not being true because it would show that he knew perfectly well what the purpose of the conservatorship was.
    And the one where Leigh Anne tells him he doesn't have to pick Ole Miss and he can go to school anywhere he wants to go.... notice that Michael Oher has NEVER called that scene fake.
