  • Welcome to Episode Four of Art Store Tours! You can watch these in any order as they are stand-alone videos. Today's episode is a special one, where I visited some art shops in Greece while I was over there on vacation. I managed to get to six stores, and this is a montage of all of them. I hope you enjoy this whirlwind art store tour!
    (My footage is a bit dodgy in parts; my brain was clearly on holiday, lol! )
    Listed below are all of the shops I visited with their websites. I've tried to include English versions wherever possible. It may load the Greek version, but in the top right corner there is often a little UK or US flag to click on for English.
    In video order:
    Panchroma: panchroma.gr/en/
    Art Center: www.art-center.com.gr/eng
    Batis: batisart.gr/
    ABIO: www.abio.gr/ (This one may only be in Greek - I can't see if there is an English option!)
    Grafis Art: www.grafisart.gr/ (I'm only seeing Greek for this website too)
    Pinelies Corfu: Has no website? Instagram: / pinelies.artsuppliesshop
    Please note that I'm not being sponsored by any of the stores, I just wanted to share their websites seeing as they were so kind to allow me to film in their shops. Thank you to the store owners, if you happen to see my video!

    Thanks for showing us these art supply stores. 👍I always love to wander through stores, especially art stores…and crafting products too…even if it’s by proxy.I could spend hours just looking. But typically, the more time I’m in a store, the better the chances that I’ll start buying something….just because.😮

    Dear Becky, thank you so much! Though I live in Athens, I live in the suburbs and knew nothing of these shops. I usually ordered from Jacksons but after Brexit its impossible to order anything above 120 euros so I found another shop in Brussels to order from, though not with the variety of Jacksons. Anyway its nice to know what is near and funny to find out from you who came from Australia, and showed me what is next to my door. With gratitude and my best wishes for you and Nick and your life in Australia!!!

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před rokem +1

      Haha that's often the way that tourists see more of a city than residents (that happens for people who visit Melbourne and tell me of places I've never been). I spent a lot of time with Google Maps scoping out these places before we went, so I could mark them all on the map as "Want to visit" places. I'm sure there were some which we missed. And the store which didn't let me film is in Glyfada, called Art and Hobby. Maybe a block back from the main Metaxa street...I think it's called Lazaraki street? Near the Starbucks anyway! Not sure if that's near you, but it's another one to check out. 🙂

    Sadly I haven't had the opportunity to go to Greece yet but in 2016 I spent 6 months in Budapest and like you found in Greece, watercolours were not very popular in Hungary, which absolutely killed me as art supplies were incredibly cheap there compared to Australia - however after a couple of months exploring I got lucky and found an art shop up in the Budapest Hills that was no longer going to stock Winsor & Newton paints as they are waay too expensive for your average Hungarian and so they were selling their stock of Winsor & Newton watercolours and I ended up buying ALL their giant pans of watercolours AND ALL the Winsor & Newton wooden trays for those giant pans, which had been discontinued years before... I got something like 25 Giant watercolour pans and 3 wooden trays for about $AUD30!!!!
    Then I did a special trip to Vienna to go to a major German chain art shop - it was sooo big and I have never seen sooooo many watercolour supplies anywhere since... row upon row of every type and brand of watercolour paper you can imagine, along with brushes and of course paints... I went crazy buying Hahnemuhle watercolour papers, sketchbooks and blocks and they had the entire range of Schmincke watercolours and watercolour sets... I didn't want to leave and felt like I was in heaven....but I soon came to Earth with a resounding thud when I saw the total at the checkout!!! Their prices were just as expensive IF not dearer than in Australia, but of course I bought lots of products I couldn't get here, so that's how I justified my big spend plus I had a great day out...

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před rokem +1

      Oh wow, it sounds like you scored an epic bargain in Budapest! How lucky to get all of the giant pans - I'd love some of those but I was a bit late to the party and they discontinued them before I realised such things existed. I hope you've been enjoying those! 😊 Ahhh yes, much of Europe is so expensive, especially when actually converting the Euro to AUD and remembering that prices are almost double, lol. I didn't spend as much as I could have because I also had fairly tight baggage limits, but it sounds like that Vienna store would have sent me bankrupt, lol. It's worth it if you had fun and scored amazing art supplies. ❤

    Thank you for this video! I live in Greece and it's true that Royal Talens products are easy to find. For watercolours, the best I can find locally is student grade (Van Gogh), so I only shop online. Most painters here work with student grade acrylic or oil so artist's grade anything is hard to find, especially watercolours. The stores you showed us are fun and beautiful though, never been to any of them. I especially loved the one in Corfu, so delightful 😊

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před rokem

    This was quite enjoyable. Smaller art supply stores are like old book shops, cozy and there is always a treasure. Liked the store on Corfu the best. If you are on an island, you want shop with a broad inventory. It’s kind of strange that almost everything is Royal Talens. Maybe because they are less expensive than other European brands. Looking forward to your next video to see what you brought home. Thanks for sharing Greece with us!

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před rokem

      I'd say so; less expensive and in plentiful supply. Greece is nowhere near as wealthy a nation as places like Germany and France, so it is more difficult to justify trying to sell super expensive brands most likely.

    On seeing a Koala thing and laughing about coming half way around the world and see it, I was in Boston and we went to the Aquarium and the first animals we saw were penguins. I love penguins, so it was nice seeing them and then I realised they were native to Victoria Australia. They were Little (Fairy) Penguins! I went to Boston when I could have gone to Phillip Island.
    That store with the arch and the three would make a nice painting. It is so adorable.
    I know it is mostly international brands, but it must be annoying for people in Greece that most of the packaging labels are in English.
    I miss art stores. I know we still have some here, but we also lost a few during the pandemic and I would love to have them back, as I love wondering around different stores.

      It's so weird seeing Aussie things in other countries! That reminds me; we found one English music radio station, and at some point we were listening to Farnsey's You're the Voice while driving through country Greece....it was bizarre! 😂 It's mostly art products that were in English, whereas most other every day items were in Greek (like supermarket items etc), or a mix of Greek and English, with occasional other languages.

      Greece is generally a bit cheaper than other European countries, especially when it comes to food and bottled water. Art supplies weren't too bad...I mean some things were pretty expensive but over all I'd say it is much the same as shopping in Australia, if somewhat cheaper with the Royal Talens products. I don't mind White Nights, it's not their fault there is conflict; they just sell lovely paints. I just thought it was kind of funny that the two nations' products where right next to each other....awkward.....😬

    Thank you, Becky, for showing us these art stores. I don’t do well in disorganized art stores so the ones with things strewn about would be my least favorite but the two stores that were better organized looked really fun. I have been to Athens and Corfu but it was years ago. Wow, there were a lot of people visiting. I love looking in art stores wherever I am but it’s always interesting to see them in other countries. I didn’t realize that watercolor wasn’t as popular in Europe. That’s too bad. I look forward to your next video (as I do to all your videos). You always brighten my day. I think watercolours may be more popular in France and Germany, but I need to visit more European countries to really get an idea, haha! It was interesting seeing how different stores were arranged, from pure chaos to organised racks. You'd like the art shops in Australia, which are almost always neatly arranged. I don't imagine Athens or Corfu have changed very much, other than the amount of people in them - it was noticeably more crowded in Greece this time compared with 2017 when we were previously there.

    Love all the shop tours! Thanks for taking the time on your vacation to film and share them with us! I saw some Maimeri gouache at the store that had the Maimeri watercolour 😊. All the shops looked different/fun, you can tell they have some personality. It’s too bad one shop didn’t allow filming, but at least most of them did. How unusual that Royal Talens was so prevalent in every store; I think one store should capitalize on that and bring in another popular brand and draw everyone to their shop for something different 😅.
    Cannot believe the shot of the crowds in the first bit of your video. We’ve been looking into planning a trip for fall, but we’ve read so many stories about the insanely huge crowds everywhere that we think we might hold off for a bit longer. We can take a trip a little closer to home. Crowds stress me out and I don’t need stress on vacation.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před rokem +1

      I had fun visiting the shops, so it wasn't a big deal for me to see them (other than trying to park at the ABIO one, which was a logistical nightmare, lol!) Royal Talens is making big bucks by the looks of things. Ah yes, the crowds were pretty epic this year, compared with 2017 when we last visited Greece. According to Nick's family, they are looking at record numbers for tourists this year! Now the world has fully opened up, everyone is champing at the bit to go exploring and make the most of life again. The Acropolis and Corfu Old Town were the two busiest areas, along with Meteora which had more tour buses than I've ever seen before anywhere!

    As much as the idea of a Huge art store sounds exciting, there something charmning about small art stores 🥰🥰🥰 about the Pheonix brand, I believe they are student grade watercolor, and people have been comparing between them with winsor and newton cotman watercolors, because there is a rumor going on that they are the same paint.

      It was fun going into tiny stores! So cute and charming. I will have to look more into Phoenix watercolours.

    So we’re the Royal Talen’s items cheaper? Fun shops!

      The sketchbooks were quite cheap, but I didn't look too much at the prices for other items. They seemed at least on a par with everywhere else. Euros are also confusing, lol.

    Can you actually bring the powders through Australian customs? Would not know what they all are?

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před rokem

      That is definitely something I considered! Carrying anything in powder form is asking for trouble at customs, so I decided not to get anything like that. Fine if it's a whole sealed jar with a proper label, but little baggies of loose powder would be too dodgy I reckon!

    Enjoyed all ,the art stores were interesting, did you find the prices comparable to Australia art prices, i think i wouldve grab the rosa watercolor tin and deftly wnouldve bought a few greece made sketch books, maybe also some ribbon also cause id wouldve like to tie my sketch books close..thank you for your tours of art stores..🎨✍👩‍🎨🇺🇲🇨🇦💛

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před rokem

      Yes, prices were quite similar, although a lot of the Royal Talens was pretty cheap there (particularly the sketchbooks). You can find Rosa Gallery paints on Amazon AU, which seems to be a recent thing, and they're pretty much the same sort of price as EU.

    I'd be interested to know with currency conversion, if any supplies are cheaper there then what we would pay back home? ( daughter is going over next year)

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před rokem

      I'd need to sit down with a calculator and currency converter to work it all out. Some things were a bit cheaper, like the Rembrandt paints and also the Art Creation sketchbooks. Others were maybe around a similar price, though in Australia it seems like everything has gone through the roof lately so it's really hard to know! Even over the time we were away, prices seemed to have risen significantly on some items (especially cat food!)

    What are the rules about using a screenshot from one of your videos to paint? I have some of my mom's old snapshots, but I also was looking at some of the angles of the images you captured too. I just wanted to be sure it is okay. Thanks, Teresa

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Oh yes, please feel free to use a screenshot for paintings - there are copyright rules around this so it's always worth checking with the artist/Tuber; I'm fine with it. 🙂

    watercolours are dead simple to make. so if the pigments are available like that, maybe they just make their own at home. unless paper is the issue.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před rokem

      Could be many reasons I suppose! I want to make some more watercolours with pigments I already own. I can attest from experience that it's actually quite difficult to get the pigment to gum arabic ratio right, and some of my early attempts were pretty bad with everything crumbling apart once they'd set into pans. 😂

    I hate graffiti. I appreciate graffiti and street art as an "art form" when it's done on canvas or wood, but never on private or public property.
    If graffiti and street artists think so highly of their talents one would think they'd tag their own homes and their own vehicles instead of property owned by anyone but themselves. Shame on them.
