Hey! Scott here... leave a common and lemme know what song you think I should learn next... be kind on me... or not!! ;-)
Geddy Lee's part in YYZ
@devinebass 'Put it Down' - Otis McDonald - John Patitucci - Just a solid stinkin' groove
Might be a bit easy, but still -
Dirty Loops - Rock you.
Victor Wooten - U can't hold no groove.
Thx and here you go: Primus Tommy the cat
Dean Town was written by Woody Goss, not Joe Dart 😁
About to say the same thing.
@@MrJKMerriweatherThe bigger question is: Did Cory Wong write Cory Wong, or was he just named after it? 🤣
My assumption would be that it was a Jack song, but the breakdown was an improv between them.
But you know what they say about assumptions: they make an ass out of you and umptions.
there’s a great video on Woody’s yt channel explaining the thinking behind it.
@@FoodgeekSo nice of Cory Wong's parents to name him after a Vulfpeck song
Let Scott learn how to play Tommy The Cat by Primus on camera!
He knows it already I bet
@@marktyler3381 But what about the chorus part and the solo? And also make him play on a 6 string
I've seen Ian playing it. Pretty sure Scott knows it.
@@Schizophrenie183 On a left handed bass? Haha
@@Schizophrenie183 A FRETLESS 6 string, to be most accurate
Ian and Sharon have been a godsend to this channel. Don't get me wrong, it was great before. But now it's better than it's ever been. I love the chemistry all three of you have. Ian and Scott's bromance fills me with joy.
Cheers for that, we appreciate it!!
I agree.
I don't know how much the editing is hiding the time. But him showing his thought process, patient and being able to play it bar by bar was actually impressive.
I think it took around 45 minutes total - but nobody wants to see all that 😂
@@IanMartinAllison actually I wanna see it lol. Might even make a fun podcast episode… find a crazy line, sit down and just record one of yall learning it completely uncut. Would be super dope to see
@@IanMartinAllison that’s pretty good time, you did an awesome job! I also really appreciate the clarity of the bass in the recording, it really helps with recognizing the notes/intervals. In learning songs for cover bands I’ve found that many bass lines aren’t quite this clear, so I think this particular song could be a great exercise for those looking to advance their ear training. 👍🏻
You can tell just by watching their other vids that Ian is a killer player. I think he may have even been hamming it up a bit. This tune isn't *terribly* difficult
Is there a better feeling than finding a shirt that perfectly matches your bass?
Well done, Ian. 👏🏻😎
And Scott match his bass with the hat lol
Ten minutes into the video and I realized I was seating and smiling all the time, such a joy. It took him one year less than it'd taken me to get the line to the tips of the fingers so far.
Birdland by Weather Report would be fun to watch someone learn by ear. Also, the joy when you hit that final note! Love it, great job friend.
I’m gonna stick with Jaco, but suggest Joni’s “Dry Cleaner From Des Moines”, specifically the intro on Shadows And Light live concert. Much less well known, yet still predictably bonkers.
I agree with both but birdland for sure with the harmonics
@garrettlimberis9313 I learned it once back in college, because our marching band was playing Birdland, and I recently picked up the bass again and could not get those harmonics to come out anymore lol
I love that there’s tab/notation with this, but I highly recommend learning it by ear first. IMO the only way to train your ear to recognize intervals and patterns is by doing it. If you just want to learn the song quickly then jump straight to the PDF, but you might be missing out on a great learning opportunity.
Totally agree
picked up a bass because of this song. people think I’ve been playing for so long even though in reality it’s only been 3 years. learning just one piece of this a week is such great practice for someone !
I wish I think like this
Let's GOOOOOOO IMA! ;-)
10:07 PLEASE explain your thought process for getting back after you got lost! It’s a super useful skill that no one talks about.
My tip is not to try to get back right away if you're hesitating. Take a breadth and try to hear the part in your mind and jump back on once you have it in your head.
Try Tetsuo Sakurai's bass solo with casiopea during the song "domino line" on the live version, you can find the video on youtube
Ian is brilliant - nails it everytime
Absolutely legendary skills from Mr Allison there!
Love seeing Scott with the SBL Lull bass as well!
I’m just over here swooning over the color of Ian’s bass
🔥🔥🔥
sooooo who is moving need this chemistry in all videos with shazz on the side
Absolutely love the learning-on-the-fly content. Lessons and exercises are one thing, but these "figure it out" moments are what will make or break you when you show up to a jam.
Always love seeing you guys together and your chemistry. Great song to cover
You guys are awesome. This track has been a fav for a long time. Thanks so much for breaking it down. I’ll be saving this to help me even begin to approach learning it!
Nice idea making that! Super nice song, obviously, happy that you ve put your interest into
This is hilarious and tremendously informative because yeah! this is what we all go through learning these parts. I LOVE the singing the parts to get them into the brain. Ian and Scott bring it. So much fun!
Ian's pain is so entertaining for the rest of us mortals. I also can't get enough of the two Mike Lull custom basses you guys are rockin!
I’m sorry, but his face at 1:50 when the groove kicked in was PRICELESS!
That was amazing Ian!!!! I would love to see Scott learn some Rush on the fly.
IAN NAILED IT! SO FAST!
Well done Ian,mate! Killing it!
Well played Ian, as ever! 👏👏👏
One of the best Bass videos I've watched in a long time.
Cheers, appreciate that!
Really fun to watch. Shows how ear training and excellent technique can take you.
This is impressive. Good job Ian!
Brilliant idea. It helps to understand the learning process. Thanks!!
You guys are so entertaining I could show this to non-musicians knowing they'll have a great time and get such a kick out of it!
love that you're having so much fun haha
Ian might not remember this as fun but we loved it! 🤣🤣🤣
That first and last note tip was really cool
I recently found this channel and it has really made me find my way back to more playing and less producing when it comes to music. Thank you for great content and the willingness to share your hard earned knowledge. If I could have any requests, it would be a dive into the world of reggae bass playing and some of the bass icons of this genre.
There will be some reggae content incoming in the academy! Watch this space!
Bravo, Ian. Amazing effort.
That was excellent watching your work flow. Thanks.
Digging those Mike Lull Custom basses!!!!😍🤩🤩😍😍
🧡🧡🧡
Excellent and what a great tone.
you guys are soooooo much fun!!
been working on this for days, Ian is awesome
Yall are too funny. And you make learning fun and not a competition this way it can be enjoyed.
Love this channel. This was awesome. Excellent job!
Glad you enjoyed it, Ian was AWESOME!
This is awesome! Actually showing how it works
Ian is one of the GOAT bassists...I literally was watching intently being amazed how quick he got some of those lines.
He’s definitely good but GOAT status? No chance
Great job, Ian. You are an absolute beast for working that out by ear on camera. I already saw someone suggest this in the comments, so I'm going to second that Scott should learn The Real Me by The Who.
Ian is a beast. You da man!
Awesome job dude!!
Well done Ian - superb!
Amazing job, Ian and a super entertaining video as well. We need more! Let Scott suffer now! 😂
🤣🤣🤣
Awesome! That song took me a whole summer to figure out.
My recommendation for Scott is The Who - The Real Me.
Crazy line ! Became classic ! Thanks for the vid, I love you guys more and more, when I’ll finally be a guitar hero, I’ll play more bass 😉
Awesome Ian...you nailed it!!!
Havona would be a piece of cake to/for you Scott...
😂😂😂😅😅😅
To be honest, you didnt struggle nearly as much as I expected, hearing those intricate lines, and the "singing before playing" advice and demonstration is GOLD to wrap your head around things. Thank you for this video.
As for an idea of what to put Scott through: Ernie Ball have this "string theory" video series inviting artists to talk and play their isolated parts. There's one with Justin Chancelor from Tool where his tone and riffs shine throughout the whole thing, but at 7:37 he plays a part of "Wings for Marie", the section on 8:56 is (in my opinion) one of the most beautiful things ever written for bass, which I never before fully appreciated hearing it within the mix with the also haunting Maynard vocals on top. I wish Scott could try learning and playing the whole section for us, if you could. Thanks!
So fun! Love it!
Beyond the work... you guys bring joy on playing bass! That's the way it always should be
🧡🧡🧡
Scott playing some of those disco bass lines he “loves” so much. Hehehe. Love the content. Cheers from Ecuador fellas!🇪🇨
Joe Jackson: steppin' out
Phenomenal job!!!
Bravo Ian..👌
Great edit as usual...you two are My Bass Hero's...and the best double act on CZcams
Thanks for that, appreciate it!!
Fantastic job! Very cool to watch!!
Glad you enjoyed it, Ian did a great job!
Great fun learning A WOODY GOSS tune! The awesome Keyboards with the sweet Rhodes pad underneath with that awesome bass line! Awesome breakdown Lads! Great job Ian!
Awesome fun!
Scott has to do "Roundabout" haha!
Both of you rocking the Lulls!
Love Allison, dude is so humble
Bass players do one thing BETTER than anyone else,, WE LISTEN 🎸🤠 from Arkansas USA
Yay for Arkansas!
Ian is the man! Dude you killed it!
Insane tone, too ✨
I had no idea my bass man crush could have grown any more! Crushed it Ian!
Hands in the air, that was impressive Ian!
Can we just take a second to appreciate the skill at learning somthing by ear for a moment!
Such a rare trait to come by these days!
Also for a suggestion for Scott, give him some Periphery to do. I want to hear that man do some Djent bass
Well honestly - seriously impressed!
I can watch You two all the time!
That Bomp Bomp Bomp @7:46 hits different after the such funky patterns 🔥
great job Ian. i thought i had a good ear but man…. you’re on another level
Man, i loved (and hated) learning this song in college, and playing it for my senior recital. But i wouldve LOVED to play this and tear it apart with Ian when he was still teaching lessons at the college I went to!
Super interesting video! Thanks a lot!
Glad you enjoyed it!
i love scott's hat and bass combo
Damn Ian! Nice job! 👏👏👏 🎉 Oddly, it was one of the first riffs I memorized and tried to play a few years ago when I started. Never really got it right, but looking forward to revisiting with your Jedi guidance.
That would take me a month of Sundays on my own. Thank you!
WOW, well done!
Absolutely fantastic!!! I’m gonna miss work tomorrow because of trying to learn 10% of this tonight!! And most likely I will also miss work next week… month..😂 WELL.DONE.YOU!!!
Haha. Awesome! I loved it ✌️
Nice work!
Totally love Scott's bass design ❤❤❤❤
Excellent, IMA! A great sport and a great player…
Definitely!!
Way to go Ian!
Hurray! What away to start my day! Thanks
Impressive mate. Well done. By ear. Wow.
these basses are stunning ! The red one is beautiful
Ian is awesome!! Very fun video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great job!
I love watching the SBL clips! And i'm not even a bassplayer myself. If you guys ever find the time to talk about Aaron Mills from the band Cameo, that would be great! Greetings from Belgium.
Wonderful job, Ian!! You crushed it! And.... I WANT that Mike Lull bass!! I have been looking for THE sound for decades. THAT is what I've been looking for. It's the IMA4, yes??
It is indeed! Cheers
@@IanMartinAllison Dude, you sound amazing on that bass!! THAT, to me, is what a Fender Jazz should sound like! I'm going to reach out to the folks at Lull, tomorrow! It is absolutely worth $5000. ... And again, great job on the analysis! You have great ears.
Ian is awesome!
Hey, Ian and Scott! Great job, congrats! The only thing I would have done differently was trying to play each part slowly before attempting to play with the track. This is important, because the anxiety might destroy the fun that' is supposed to happen throughout the process!
Good for you, Ian-impressive. I find the 16th-notes section is more challenging than the main section.
That scatting is magical
I'm so impressed 👍
vulfpeck has been the most fun ive had at any concert, i did a 10 day road trip out to austin to see them at stubbs in austin
🔥🔥🔥
Very nice Ian, GOAT
...bu du bi du budu BA! I love it!!! You guys rock!
