Ella was Karen's musical idol, she loved jazz and she loved Ella, and Ella says to Karen, "so pretty" in the middle there, and there were two legends enjoying the genius of the other. After Karen passed, Ella was apparently grief stricken for days over it.
I don' think enough people realized back then that Karen was as close to perfection as a singer could be. And Ella, whew, the female Sinatra when it came to interpreting a lyric like no one else. I had no idea they had ever performed together. Died and went to heaven I did feel indeed. Thank you!!
And just 3 years later,Karen was gone. Ella was with us for 16 more years and I had the privilege of seeing her in concert later on in the 1980’s,though her eyesight was so poor from diabetes that she needed to be guided on to the stage. Her voice though…oh,that voice, was just as rich and beautiful! There is another video of Ella and Mel Torme at an awards ceremony breaking into scat singing that’s worth a watch! Love you,Harri!❤️❤️
Karen was a HUGE fan growing up listening to Ella... It was true a dream come true for Karen to sign with Ella... And they both had mutual respect as Ella stated herself that she was a big fan of Karen's voice...
Oh, yes. In the late eighties I was carrying my laundry to the laundromat a half-mile away. I saw a Bentley pulling into the frozen yogurt shop at a strip mall and the driver parked and opened the back door and emerged...Ella friggin Fitzgerald, wooden leg and all. The driver proceeded to help the Master walk into the shop very slowly and I called out "I love you Ella thank you for everything!" and she raised her right hand in acknowledgement. Yup.
It's SO NICE to hear people that CAN REALLY SING! No SCREAMING OR PIG CALLING SOUND but they can ACTUALLY hit the notes AS WRITTEN! It's the music I grew up with! Thanks for sharing Harri!
When class met class! Burt Bacharach said that Karen Carpenter had the voice of an angel. So cool seeing these legends again. Excellent selection, performance and reaction. Thank you, Debbie and Harri!
Thanks, Debbie, for this superlative selection! A jazz legend and a pop icon doing a medley of beautifully crafted songs. It doesn’t get any better than this 🎉 Thanks, as always, for your joyful reaction Harri✌🏼
Thanks for your enthusiastic reaction Harri. I watch this with mixed emotions because Karen had gotten so thin by this time and it’s very sad. Especially, in hindsight, knowing of her pain. I feel we are very blessed to have all of the wonderful recordings to enjoy for all time. Thanks again Harri. 🌸✌️
Masquerade, a beautiful song written by Leon Russell in 1972 for The Carpenters, as he felt Karen voice was suited perfectly. He also wrote Superstar for Karen. This duet is so well suited, for these superstars. Their classy styles and delightful sweet vocals so well matched to these classic hits. The beautiful orchestral backing just a perfect match. What a performance to see live. ❤ Great reaction Harri. ❤ Beautiful, Debbie. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦
I think this is from a special called Music! Music! Music! From 1980. Back ehen music had great singers, and someone said, when class merts class. Two gifts from God at their vocal best. I give thsnks every daybthstci grew up in their time. Glorious.
Very well said Harri. When it comes to class, this is hard to beat! Two of the very best. When Karen comes up to her idol, Ella says something to her. I think she says "so good". Whatever she said, it brought a big smile to Karen's face, which was so nice to see. Never get tired of watching this masterpiece. Thanks Harri.
HARI, if you want to see a happy karen and songs that will blow you away try music music music 1980, several songs with an orchestra and choir and Richard she is happy delightful and her voice has never sounded better, her rendition of someday is truly breathtaking, treat yourself, you will love it

@chitownlee spot on because she died in 1983, just short of her 33rd b'day. And I miss her to this day. As my mom used to say, they just don't make em like that anymore!
Ms Fitzgerald was such a an accomplished artist that she could even make a bland, mediocre artist like the "vocalist" in this seem like she had a modicum of talent! Thank you, First Lady of Song!
The best of the best! Imagine if Amy winehouse was old enough to sing w/them...a tri-et. Too think that Taylor swift sells out arenas & halls...christ, she couldn't carry Ella's girdle or Karen's lunch pail...sad how so "dumbied- down" people have become regarding musical tastes & less intelligent than 40 to 50 years ago.

Karen left this world far too soon. And Ella was simply the QUEEN - the greatest female singer ever

That was really nice. I'm sure Karen was thrilled to be performing with such a legend in Ella Fitzgerald.

All we need now is for Sarah Vaughan to enter stage left and do her thing with these other 2 forces of nature.
I'm the same age as Karen and Ella was 33yrs older then me so if this was in the 70's Ella would have been in her 50's or early 60's.

That song, Harri, is the beautiful Close To You.
