  • Today at Ewetopia Farms, we show you what winter life on a sheep farm in Ontario, Canada looks like. We started the day off with beautiful fat snowflakes falling gently from the sky as twin lambs were being born in the barn. We had a visitor to the farm who brought with him a surprise package. Then when we opened the back door to get some straw, barn cat, Buddy, entertained us as he frolicked in the snow. Next we went to complete our chores in the Coveralls and put down more bedding for everyone and had a little lesson on Canadian snow and our military or lack thereof. As the day ended, the winds and cold temperatures picked up as another blizzard headed our way.
    Sheep and sheep farming is our passion and we hope that the love we have for what we do is obvious to you the viewers. Our operation is a large scale, registered Suffolk and Poll Dorset sheep farm combining the best of pasture and confinement to manage the flock for maximum comfort, minimal stress, and producing a consistent, very high quality product. Our focus is on providing breeding stock for sale to other sheep producers. All our sheep are treated with the utmost compassion which I think will become evident as you join us on our daily rounds on our working sheep farm in eastern Ontario, Canada.
    I hope you enjoy this video. If you would like to follow along with us and experience life on a real live sheep farm on a daily basis, please subscribe so that you don't miss a single episode!
    Thank you for taking the time to watch! We love to hear from you so be sure to leave a comment as well.

    Good morning Arnie and Lynn. Wow. Another wintery day of snow which was the perfect consistency for snow balls for the army. 🥲🥲Hilarious. The bottle babies are really clever little things greeting you in the morning and even smarter when they stay for one on one time with Lynn. Hope one of the snappy rams becomes a stunner like Snappy. That would be so wonderful. Buddy was the star today with his joyous playing in the snow. Can animals get any cuter than playing in the snow or the lambs having a race. That was such a wonderful gift and perfect timing as well. We all love your videos because they raise our spirits each day. Stay warm. Big hugs to you both b🥰🥰🥰

    Thanks to Tammy for keeping you warm! Send out kindness into the world and it comes back to you multiplied. I’m sure the less kind CZcamsrs accumulate the unkind people. I’ll fess up to the gloves just so you don’t have a mystery. I was worried they were not good quality but I figured they were better than nothing. 😊 I play your videos for my puppy and the sheep sounds put him to sleep now. 😂 Take care.

    Hi Lynn, Those lambs were having so much fun, they all want to be "King of the Hill". They had me laughing so much watching them slip & slide off the top. I understand head pain makes us supersensitive to any sounds. And the joy you got from Tammy's gift was what lifted your spirit. GOD bless Tammy❣That was very nice of her. I knew you were gonna throw that snowball at Arnie, so funny. Everybody is looking so good & that's a blessing. If there is ever anything you all need don't hesitate to ask. How fun that you made a snowball for your viewers that live in warm climates! When you show those blizzard days with snow and the wind blowing it reminds me of the 65 years I lived in Minnesota. Winter temps -20 to -40 F were not unheard of (before windchill.) So I can totally vouch that when you say it hurts to breathe you are not exaggerating at all. Your face hurts. Your eyelids freeze shut. Even with layers of clothing, your skin is red and cold for an hour after you come in. (your new electric blanket will feel good then) One thing that was even worse for me than the cold was driving kids to hockey practice when you can hardly tell the road from the ditch. Now I'm retired and in MN only in the summer and I spent winters in Southern Florida. 🌴🌴 We appreciate you braving the cold to bring us your vlog. You always keep it fun and entertaining yet educational and interesting.

    Yeap, sometimes even with human babies poop in their sacs under stress... or when they stay too long in the belly... it can cause pneumonia... mostly not. But it is sometimes tricky...

    In Belgium straw is cheaper than hay. But both aren't that expensive... not like in these very warm countries. But there they don't need that much bedding. I know with my goats, in winter we stacked it up. Every day a new bed of straw. In spring when we cleaned the "jocks" sometimes it was half a meter high... layer after layer... the higher it came the warmer it got... and their fluids went true it and so the first layer always stayed dry and warm. I even slept in there when it was lambing season as I had only 6 ewes 5 of them wanted me with them... they stopped labor when I went. So I made myself cozy in their jocks and helped them out with lambing. The other 1 ewe she preferred privacy... I went for 5 minutes in the house and as I return there they were 2 lambs... 😂. Ad especially goat lambs are almost crying like babies. So when I was nurturing my children, I come in the barn and my milk arrived cause of hearing the lambs... always very annoying 😂😂😂

    • @EwetopiaFarms
      @EwetopiaFarms  Před rokem +5

      Great story! I used to sleep in the barn during lambing way back when I first started and it is cozy sleeping in the straw. Lamb's crying making your milk drop is hilarious! Only a mother can understand that one!🤣🤣🥰

    Just fascinating to watch Arnie deliver lambs, I have to ask, how long has Arnie been doing this? It is my strong desire to go in sheep farming, but I always ask myself IF I’d be able to do that! He is such a pro at this, Arnie give me some words of encouragement!

    • @EwetopiaFarms
      @EwetopiaFarms  Před rokem

      I will have him address this in a video. However, he started with cows and has basically been working with livestock his whole life. But you can do it too. The more you do it the more skilled you become. I used to do all the lambing myself because Arnie wasn't used to it but now he does most of it because he has longer arms and is stronger than me for those really difficult pulls. I will have him talk about this though.

      @@EwetopiaFarms thanks Lynn for the words of encouragement, looking forward to getting some tutorials, on a different subject, there is a restaurant near you, I’ll order some food for you guys, does Arnie eat “all dressed” pizza or does he have his preference. And you, spaghetti and meat balls for Milano restaurant?

    • @EwetopiaFarms
      @EwetopiaFarms  Před rokem

      @Abuskeleke really? You seriously don't have to do that lol! He actually like mushrooms, green peppers and pepperoni. You would think he's a big meat eater, but he's not 😁. Next time he delivers a lamb and we're both there for it, we will try to describe what we are doing step by step.

    More questions…
    Is a grass-fed operation feasible in Canada? In cold weather the caloric needs of a pregnant ewe or of a lamb are so high that everyone understands the need to supplement with grain. And yet… bighorn sheep manage.

    • @EwetopiaFarms
      @EwetopiaFarms  Před rokem +6

      I am sure plenty of people would say yes it is feasible. However, we personally feel they need supplementing during breeding, pregnancy and lactation especially if you are wanting good quality lambs.

    • @EwetopiaFarms
      @EwetopiaFarms  Před rokem +6

      Wild animals manage but tend to have singles and have and extremely high mortality rate and short lifespan. Domestic animals have it much easier 🙂
