Zooming with Roger Federer and Stefan Edberg

- In September 2020, we had the privilege of catching up with the two living legends, Roger Federer and Stefan Edberg, to get their thoughts on all things Pro Staff; past and present. We had a lot of laughs as the guys talked equipment, tactics, and shared some really great stories, including how Roger came up with the idea for the SABR (sneak attack by Roger) and how Stefan won his first pro title with just 3 prototype rackets in his bag. Check out the video for these stories and more!
Possibly the 2 most elegant tennis players of all time. It's nice to see the estimation Roger and Stefan have for each other, it's clearly visible in this video. On my side, it was a privilege to be there in Milan when both Roger and Stefan won their very first tournement. What they don't mention here and probably don't even know is that it was not on the same tennis court, the stadium where Stefan won the tournement in 1984 does not exist anymore. It was destroyed by an incredible heavy snowfalling in 1985 in Milan, 2 meters of snow on the roof completely crashed the stadium. Roger won the tournement in another arena, actually not far from the other one. I do remember the 2 players at the very beginning of their careers when they basically were unknown...
Switzerland have that crisp wifi
lmaooo great comment
The greatest wifi of all time lmao
Goat gets goat WiFi
It kind of looks like there is a different camera filming him to the one he is zooming with and looking at, but RF deserves a crisp and clear image! 🐐
lol
4:47 to 4:57 Stefan trying hard to hide his smile when Roger referred him as his hero 🤩
dear lord, that was adorable
15:05 not even trying! :-)))
goats ❤️
Definitely wanted to grin
Epic! Edberg and Federer 🎾 What an awesome chat! Can’t believe how relaxed the host was, sitting there with two of the 🐐. So refreshing to see a host who actually knows about tennis. Arguably one of the best tennis chats ever. Super awesome👌
The host looks like Mark Zuckerberg.
The best looking racket ever to match the greatest player ever
Roger is pretty good also! 😆
Djoko is goat
I miss Roger on the Tour, hope he comes back 2021
He might not enjoy empty stadium. he always says he relies on big crowd to keep highest motivation. Due to Coronavirus, he will have to rely to trying to improve his legacy in term of results to keep his motivation. it might work
@@taopaille-paille4992 it should be better in 21, you can already see small crowds building back up in the stadiums in the current games.
He is very motivated to come back and play some more tennis. I love the fact that Rafa and Nole happened, this must motivate him, the winners are the tennis fans here.
@@Vaisin Yes, and I have the naive belief that less crowd may make Federer to remind him when he was playing with now crowd when young and teenager. He was playing for nothing but tennis and keep improving. Small crowds have not lower down the level of tennis and tension at this RG, which was very nice to see. And it is maybe due to the fact that players put more focus to their game, to what tennis is, because of the small crowd

McEnroe, Edberg and Federer have the best hands in the history of the game.
+Sampras
Ever seen Rafa left arm
Not to forget players like Leconte and Wawrinka

Stefan Edberg is such a friendly guy and so down to earth. He had always been my role model - since my childhood. 2008 I was part of a sponsor and he was next to me. And all I said was if we could make a photo when he and his wife did left the building and go to a car. We did this pic, but it was okay to speak with him in this sponsor room and I did not!! What a pity! But in the hotel I met Lacoste and Borg.
cant believe it my 2 idols together ; what a treat !! thanks a million
same here and they're talking about my favourite racquet. Tennisnerd galore ;)
Great, great video. Rewatch 1990 Wimbledon final this summer. Edberg stayed at the baseline once (1!) after his serve during 5 sets and then he did it as a suprise-move to kind of fool Becker. But there was not a single base line rally in that match. Times has changed a lot :-D
Attacking tennis is the most exciting to play or watch - McEnroe, Stefan, Pete, Rafter those were the days.
I am just wearing a huge smile just to see Roger in the screen :). Roger, you are so missed.
What a great tennis conversation, to see Edberg and Fed to discuss change of surfaces and serve and volley. What a lost art
I always enjoy watching Roger Federer in an interview. He’s alway in his jolly mood!
The interviewer knows the score. Just how special it is to have these guys in a chat. He dealt with the situation really well.
wondeRFul to hear ROGI's passion for Serve and Volley and faster courts !!
Thanks Wilson and miss you Roger, come back strong next year!
I really enjoyed listening to two of my idols sharing their insights and stories around their rackets. I have also used Prostaffs many times over the years. Unfortunately I could never get my Prostaffs to do what they did with them. Mine must have been defective. ;-)
Stefan Edberg and Roger Federer very nice Interview .I Hope That Roger will wiin Wimbledon this year again
This was a great chat. Hearing the legends talk about each other, their equipment, habits, approach was amazing. You can’t get this background easily. The facilitator did a great job staying out of the way and letting the two speak.
yes!
2 tennis gods in 1 Zoom call.
Well done!
I love Stefan Edberg very much. especially the service delay. First, Edberg is the only one who has a service twist that doesn't need power. Edberg's service floated and was suspended in the air enough for him to hit the net, standing right at the service line ready to volley. Second, Edberg has a great backhand, especially the running backhand, because his racket back swing is already prepared by him when he runs. Third, Edberg is weak in the forehand, so he covers it with service games & volley. But until now Edberg remains a unique tennis player and to this day he is my idol. It's hard to imitate his body turning during service, his movements are beautiful like ballet. Greetings Edberg.
Edberg couldn't rally with his forehand against the likes of lendl and Becker because he didn't quite have the firepower but his passing shots were deadly on that wing, not with power but superb angles
Federer and Stefan.....on a zoom chat....talking normal shit.....Love this so much
what an awesome discussion for tennis nerds! so cool to hear great champions talking like it's a relaxed dinner table conversation, rather than a TV interview.
great to see both tennis legends talking about rackets and games, tactics and what not. I am a big fan of both of legends. Enjoy a lot!
Whoa! Love Roger and Stefan even more now - amazing human beings. This interviewer was awesome and pulled so much information from these two champions. This was really fun to watch. Thank you so much. Missing Roger on tour and praying that he recovers quickly and completely and he is ready to play and win the Australian Open 2021!

can't wait to see him back in 2021
I am very proud to be an Wilson stockist for nearly 50 years. They are without a doubt, the very best rackets bruce garner pro sports. Thank you, Wilson
The Pro Staff probably has the most Slam singles title. It's gotta be the Greatest Racket of All Time, no?
Absolutely!
It has been the greatest. The current iteration is not up to par though and the ProStaff will need significant modifications to compete with what’s available in the market now.
Depends on your point of view. Not many of those grand slams are French Opens so maybe not the best for all surfaces like Roger alluded to.
I will continue the pro staff legacy
Rod laver would have used it too if it existed then. It’s the ultimate classic game racquet along with steffi and McEnroe’s Dunlop.
This is such a great talk, I love how they not only talk about the racquet (which I could listen to indefinitely) but also about the game plays, styles, characters and so much more. Please do more of these..
Edberg is still a stud! That man has aged so well
True. He does not drink or smoke and lives in a less polluted nation I assume.
Looks the same age as Federer.
Saw him practising with Roger at the O2, he still moves amazingly. Couldn’t believe my luck to be courtside watching the two legends.
I miss Roger on the Tour.
Yeah why doesnt he play?
Top class both of them!
"Can't wait to go"
Music to the ear. 😃
This is an amazing interview. Two tennis legends talking about Pro Staff racket and sharing past memories. I enjoyed every second of it, thank you very much for this!!
I would have loved to see Courier and Sampras included in this discussion. It would’ve been nice to see all the grand slam champions of the Pro Staff 85 in one round table discussion.
Very valid perspective Rossbaycult.
The original Pro Staff 85 was designed with help[[ of Connors and he used the racket briefly - I'd like to hear his input. Chrissy Evert and Mary Pierce also used the racket.
Awesome. Two of my favorite persons in the world speeking to each other about Prostaff.
Thx for creating this V-logg ❤️
What a wonderful interaction! Loved it! 🤗
Legends!!
Love them both 😊
Great interview with my fav players. If I had the original Pro Staff, I m framing it.
funny moment when federer cracked a smile after edberg repeated what he said at the very beginning. " my pleasure as well , nice to be hear " 0:12
That was a great call having these legends talking about their weapons. I was a ProStaff user for a long time and until a while back I was still playing with a 6.1 95 classic and it was a joy. Played briefly the RF90 and the RF97 Autograph but always got back to the 6.1 classic. One that was not a ProStaff but it really felt like one was the Six One 95 from 2014. I also played with that one. I'm currently playing with the Clash because I can't play with either of the above and never liked the ProStaff 97 (has nothing to do with a ProStaff except for the name). Great one, loved it, it's really great to go down to earth with our idols. Thanks!
My only two favorite players together. Wow! Thanks!
Two Legends, this was a great interview 👍
Stefan retired and Roger is also retiring soon. These happening during my lifetime and it seems very soon.
It's a pity they are very special in our life.
My 2 favourite tennis players with the best looking backhand😍 Stefan was my idol back in those days. Miss all the serve and volleys from those days.
32 min...Roger, still gets excited unboxing a new racket delivery !....wow...ps Edberg, was one of my tennis heroes
Roger we miss you 😘
Glad they kept their special rackets - could you imagine ever winning one!
Love to hear these legends talk💪
Roger is the best,!,!!
Great video! So cool to have these guys talk about their racquet tech.
😍 see you at 2021 Rog...Miz you 🤗👏🏻
Roger is going to come back and SABR everyone!
Miss Roger on the tour.. not expecting you to win anymore champ.. just want to see you play..
I gew up playing with the Wilson Jack Kramer Pro Staff, loved the feel of that racquet
Superb talk!! Congrats Wilson..Im also playing with a prototype Wilson raquet! ....:))
10:34 Rog looks happy that Stefan uses his stringbed ;-)
(natural gut in the mains, Luxilon on the cross)
This is great! Now that Roger is Retired, would love to see him kick a$$ in the Champions Tour..
Agree on courts variety. Miss Wimbeldon serve and volley.
Excellent insight about racket technology and playstyles from two very wise legends. Good stuff Wilson!
Been playing with a Wilson Pro Staff for a long time 🎾❤️
Carlos Alcaraz..."i like to play like Federer, attack the ball and finish at the net". But he is a fantastic baseliner and equally good on offense and defense. So, players find a way
Thanks for this great interview!!!
Great Interview. Thank You :)
Pete best service by technical as well as mental ability to win . If my life had to depend on a serve I would want pete to do his thing. I have never seen a human that can replicate that dominating motion. Incredible. So really there is no one best. There are just many greats that did it there way.
Roger has the best reception? Very clear screen. #Envy :)
Can we get a streamed practice session with roger and the new racquet?
Great rackets ...the Pro Staff. Stefan really snubbed me at the Lipton tournament...he was practicing at the back court with Magnus Norman and there was no one around. He refused to give me an autograph. I thought what a lie that he is a nice guy.I never saw him again after that.
Sometimes even kind people get irritated... I've almost got punched by the singer of simply red in the restaurant where he was having dinner and I was working...for asking an sutograph
It was not pleasant... But in time I've understood mistake was mine...he was in his private time
Stefan is and always will be a nice man! That’s never been a lie!! Sometimes they need their privacy too...
No. Don’t even speak about retirement, Roger
Great Interview. I have a lot of respect for the Pro Staff. Bought one in early 90's when Pete, Stefan, and Courier were dominating with it. I just wish I was able to play with it at the time (no access to demos for me). It was too much like a stiff board and I went back to Prince Graphite. I'm sure the new pro staff is great though.
Hello Paul.
@@pauljohnson6019 lol. Hello Paul J.
@@paulc7804 Are we twin brothers, or brothers, who have discovered each other- lol, could be, identical first name, and same green icon!
@@pauljohnson6019 If you were here b/c you loved the original pro staff then probably not. I wish I was able to play with the original pro staff back in the day but it just was not a racket for me. I have stayed away from Wilson ever since.
Prefer the 90 and 88. The 97 has too much trampoline for me so I sold it and bought two k88. Never been happier.
OmG! I love both of them. ❤❤
The only forehand that was more fearsome than Roger's was DEL.Potro.
Autograph 97 is unreal.... if you got the right strings and tension. But if they are a little too tight or loose- It's very tough to use.
Great point. It took me some time to figure out my sweet spot on tension but 57 / 54 lbs (gut 16g / Prince tour XT 18 g) and (55/52 lbs) (multi/ same poly) works well too. Never liked the feel of full poly (cyclone or cyclone tour) even at lower tension< 54 lbs and definitely not above 55 lbs. Felt like a board.
Notice how many times Roger lifts his hand to scratch his head or touch his face vs. the others. That's a watch endorsement deal for you! Rolex.
be a great coach for sure
I played with all of the iterations from the original to the most current. The latest model is underpowered. So, I switched to the Head Speed Pro and added head weight for balance. I would be willing to go back to the pro staff if it can equal the power and control of the Speed Pro.
That pal looks just like David Schwartzman! :)
PS 6.0 85 was the best ever
Imagine pete or borg played until 40 borg would have broke every record. He had 11 majors before 25. 15 more years he would have gotten 2 per year until 32. Would have been 24 majors. Borg for that reason is the greatest ever
Man 85 head size is unheard of these days lol
the host is SOOOO cute.
Heard Roger mention the name "Patrick" towards the end. Google "Wilson Tennis Vlog Patrick" and see what you find. You're welcome!
I had called Wilson in 2008 to give me some info on Federer or Sampras rackets, i.e., weight and balance point, and of coure they refused to tell me the specs citing its a trade secret. I begged them, since I wanted to experiment with no intention of telling anyone else. They wouldn't budge but contradicted themselves, by saying, "he uses the stock racket".. but still would not give me the balance point. Anyway, I found the exact specs for Federer and Nadal, after a few months of web searching. Now, there are videos of their rackets with tension based on court and humidity and balls, type of strings, balance point, weight and even the grip type etc. I still bought the KFactor 90, the quality control was garbage, both rackets were worlds apart in all their specs. had to use weights to balance it according to Wilson Specs. Then I found, Yonex and Head had the best QC for their rackets.
I had expected way more views due to Roger.
🙏
Why wasn't Pete in on this call?
becuase hes now with babolat
@@alexsweeta and sasquatch don't know how to use wifi
Perhaps he git bored of tennis when 29 and didnt want to have sth else to do eith it.
❤️❤️❤️
I can believe Wilson is great for professionals. But the quality of those rackets on the market for simple amateurs, didn’t compare to other brands, at least in my country in the period of 1995-2010.
Why on earth doesn't wilson sell the entire pro staff lineup? The RF85 and RF90 should be included and it will complete the RF lineup. Having only the 97 sucks. Some players like the smaller frames and they should have the choice!
curious, what do you like about the smaller frames? I'm in the process of picking out my first racquet
@@poptart3598 It's more about nostalgia. Hitting with the frames I grew up with.
@@adamblister6005 You gotta admit the 85 pro staff had an amazing sweet spot and feel. Not forgiving, but a great racket.
@@blake7871 yup
私はpoptartです Seems like the SV ps85 and also the head Pro Classic hit the mark as the perfect all round racquets that combined unreal feel, playability and demand of the user high quality shot making, emotionally rewarding the user for making excellent shots. Newer/larger heads seem to reward miss hits all over the place which deep down I think players appreciate but don’t feel good about. On the flip side, wood racquets demand too much off the user and always broke more often.
The modern game unfortunately really doesn’t allow for smaller frames anymore unless wielded by truly gifted individuals as everyone is swinging for the fences now.and the serve volley has almost disappeared.
Would love to see the Atp for just one year specify 85 square inches across the board and see what happens.
off topic but who is the host? he is fly as fuq!
Heard Roger mention the name "Patrick" towards the end. Google "Wilson Tennis Vlog Patrick" and see what you find. You're welcome!
I heard quality control at Wilson is really bad. In fact, the paint chipped off my 6.1 95 pro stock (black/white Tuxedo paint) from literally nothing. It must have happened in my bag! What's that about?!
The big story for me is Fed going from 85 inches to 97 inches.
Nice
Just wondering, why does Serena not use the Wilson Pro staff instead of the Wilson Blade? #saber
Now, who wants to go out and buy a Wilson racket?
I have several. 85, 90, 95 but not the 97. I'll have to trade for one in the future. I have witnessed many people that have bought the 97 but they don't have the skills or strength/endurance to play with the heavy stiff racquet. Thus, they don't actually regularly play with the stick. And, it sits in the closet or their bag when they are on the court😊. I like their hybrid string idea for comfort and touch.
*Late Jimmy Connors with his yellow Racket ^^
There was a female named Evert who played with the Pro Staff also. She wasn't half bad.
She also used the Jack Kramer staff too. I think that one was identical to the 85 pro staff except it had fiberglass instead of Kevlar.
@@blake7871 I had a Kramer and it seemed like the same mold. It didn't play the same at all though.
@@kayanoreeves1949 I've heard that. The Pro Staff had an amazing feel. I never played with a Kramer, but it was a good bit cheaper. A poor man's pro staff I guess.
