You caught it, there was an element of prog in early Foreigner due to the co-founder, Ian McDonald, being an original member of King Crimson. He played guitar, sax, flute, keys and sang backup. Their first album is special.
Had the privilege of seeing this band live.....a long time ago...in a distant land....called Allentown Fairgrounds. ....in Allentown. ..Pennsylvania. ...USA....on August 26th ....1985....A very Awesome Experience. ...Foreigner. ....and they brought The Gospel Choir out....on tbeir hit song....'I wanna Know what love is '......that was performed Beautifully.
Every song off the first two Foreigner albums is fire especially Double Vision, Hot Blooded, Cold As Ice, Starrider, Headknocker, Blue Morning/Blue Day, Damage Is Done and Back Where You Belong. Off their fourth LP the massive hits were Juke Box Hero and Urgent.
@@timwhitnell7145 I also prefer their rockers. Even Gramm himself dislikes their power ballads. He hates that "I Want to Know What Love Is" is their biggest hit. You mentioned one of my favorite deep cuts: "Back Where You Belong." Double Vision was the first 8-track I bought as a kid. Knew every song from that album by heart. Another favorite deep cut from Double Vision is "Love Has Taken Its Toll."
@@Prof_Jeff Hey, Jeff. Yes, some of their lesser known songs are great as well. I really love the gritty little rocker Headknocker. There's a meanness and sinister-like quality to it that in real life isn't attractive to me at all but in the context of the song it is appropriate. Blue Morning/Blue Day is another deep cut I really like. I never had 8-Tracks but in the 1970s I bought reams of Maxell cassettes and made my own mixed tapes. I still have several dozen of them but no way to play them.
Classic selection, Imadrummin! I'm pretty sure "Feels Like The First Time" and "Cold as Ice" were the first Foreigner songs I ever heard on the radio, Great reaction, too, Harri!
Where it all began for Foreigner. This, Foreigners first release, made it to #4. This song absolutely smokes. Thanks Harri!! Yes, Harri has reacted to "Juke Box Hero" as well.
This original classic does smoke! I prefer it over another earlier hit -- "Cold As Ice". I've been heavy handed with Foreigner selections on here, Imadrummin: "Waiting For A Girl Like You", "Dirty White Boy", and "Blue Monday, Blue Day" were some of my earlier selections. For reasons unbeknownst to me, there is no longer any record of Harri's reaction to Waiting For A Girl Like You in his catalog of reactions. Care to share your 2¢ as to why that might be?
@@pncombies Unless YT hit it with a copyright later on and it got taken down, that's all I could think of. "Waiting For A Girl Like You" is one of the most beautiful rock ballads ever IMO. Wish it was still on here my brother. 👍
@@Imadrummin Dude, it was Harri's first Foreigner reaction. He loved it! That being said, whe he heard my second Foreigner selection - Dirty White Boy" he was confused. He thought Foreigner was a ballad band. I chuckled. I assured him that Foreigner was a rock and roll band.
Huge radio hit from one of my favorite albums. Most radio stations missed some good songs on this debut. Great mix of songs tonight! Thanks for the reaction!✌
Hari's note about the proggy synth on this song reminds me that The Cars came out around the same time with keyboard effects that punched-up already catchy tunes. The Cars were more quirky and influenced new wave, while Foreigner had that massive crunchy guitar sound and Lou Gramm's powerful voice.
Yahoo. My favourite Foreigner song. This song is fabulous from start to finish. Written by Mick Jones, it was their debut single, from the album, Foreigner, 1977. Lou Gramm sang it at his audition for Foreigner, outstanding vocals!!! So many great riffs, clever little hooks, the Hammond organ, the synthesizer and the stimulating drumming throughout. Made it to Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100's and Number 7 on the Canadian charts Glad you were groovin Harri, great reaction. Thanks Harri and Imadrummin. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
My favorite rock band of all time... Lou Gramm is unparalleled as a lead rock vocalist. And Mick Jones is off the charts. Not only was he the lead guitarist, he also played all these intricate keyboard solos. What a musician!
One of my favs. They definitely have some rocking songs. Lou has one of the top vocals in Rock. Whether he is rocking it or singing you a ballad and making you feel it. Lucky got to see Lou live. Awesome concert. 20 ft from stage. Have some crappy videos for some sweet memories.
Synth started in popular music in the late 60's. As soon as transistors became cheap and reliable, keyboard mfgrs started integrating all sorts of variables that was hard or cumbersome to do with vacuum tube amps. also some midi stuff started being developed for digital processing that would make it's way into the public's hands in a few yrs. Until then it was just a few techs with a room full of hardware experimenting with things that would eventually fit in a gig bag or on a circuit board in an electronic keyboard. Also I'm a fan of Imadrummin's requests. I'm a drummer too so our taste in music isn't surprising ;) Caught Foreigner when they first came to the states on their initial tour. Lou Gramm's voice was pure and clear and awesome. And this was the only hit they had at the time. albeit the B side "Feels Like The First Time" was close on it's heels. Great festival in Atl with ARS, Bob Seger ,Heart and Foreigner.
Thank you Hobodeluxe960. You are spot on about the development of the synth/key era. Fascinating times. I saw Foreigner during the Double Vision, Head Games and 4 tours. Lou and Mick get most of the attention but I have to say Dennis Elliot was a perfect fit on drums. Smooth as silk and tasteful drumming. Very cool to hear from you! 🥁👍✌
@@Imadrummin yeah Dennis was great. What do you think of the new kids coming up? Yoyoka is just amazing. I think Bonham was reincarnated in her little body lol. .

@@Imadrummin I get so much joy watching kids play and have fun. Clark Family Creative is a good channel for that. Those kids, while not phenoms are trying and progressing along nicely. Great song by them, enjoy this classic music while you can, I hope I'm wrong but I'm thinking the "woke" crowd is going to come after this era of music next, why? because it's bringing people together in spite of political or religious beliefs or ethnicity. Glad I've got my records tapes and CD's, they can't take that away.
This sounded so fresh when it first jumped out of my speakers towards me. We weren't quite ready for this band I don't think but we loved it! I would suggest listening to head knocker and star rider.

It's a shame this group isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Over 50 Million record sales world-wide!!! I've seen numbers of almost 80 Million.
Maybe they should come out with a rap or country album. The Hall would surely induct them then.
