Hey, Panasonic! Send Marlene Hielema a free copy of the Lumix G9 successor if or when it manifests. Countless people have bought your cameras because of her videos & still more will.
Take it easy, Marlene. Use birding to relax when life gets in the way.
Ah, you're the best! I'm going to PIN your comment. Thank you so much.
@@ImageMaven Thank YOU for what you do!
Amen to this..and she's quoted or suggested, often in other on line groups and youtube videos!!
Such a great way to think about it - you don’t always have to go far away or work super hard for a great photo! I can’t believe you have a hawks nest so close that’s fantastic!
Yes, a great way to learn and practice. I do it all the time, especially with new gear. Well.... the hawks have turned on me! I should have waited a couple more days to post this video as there is now more to the story. I've posted the next chapter in my community post for today. Thanks for stopping by to chat, Emily.
Good to see you back online!
Hey, thanks Robin. Hopefully I can continue to produce content on a more regular basis. Cheers.
Great to see you back!
Great to have you back too Kathy! Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks so much for sharing such a wonderful video, beautiful photos 🐦👍🤗
So nice of you to say. Thank you for taking a look! Cheers.
Hi Marlene, good to hear from you again with your G9! As always, a great tutorial. All the best!
Thank you so much Russell. All the best to you too!
Great comeback video! I love shooting my backyard birds. We have a few feeders, watch each generation and feel like they are our pets. 😅 Lately I’ve been trying to get fledglings being fed, that’s a fun shot.
Haha, I know what you mean. We had some "pet" American Robins nesting on our deck a couple years ago and we got very attached to the little family. We had to curb the feeders a bit though as we ended up with 50 common sparrows eating up my veggie patch too. Thank you for chiming in!
waww Marlene I have same passion for bird pics!😃
Great to hear this. It's so fun!
Fabulous! So much fun!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great tutorial and helpful tips Marlene. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful Brian. Cheers!
Hi Marlene, thanks for sharing your knowledge. It's good that you're back with us. I've missed you.Saludos desde Colombia
Thanks for your kind words Luis. I hope to start creating videos a couple times a month from now on.
Hey great to have you back, worth waiting for, made me smile the baby bird getting feather slapped by his mum! As always thanks for the advice and tips👍
Glad I made you smile. 😊Thank you for stopping by to chat. Cheers.
Smashing stills and videos as always. I was wondering if you were ok. Lovely to see you back again.
Thank you so much for checking in and watching the video.
Panasonic should definitely send you a g9ii and the new 100-400mm lense. If it got the Marlene stamp of approval, that would definitely get me and many others pressing the buy now button!
My fingers are crossed! And, you really made my day. Thx.
Great to see a new video from you Marlene.
I shoot try shooting with a monopod too. I haven't been good with the 100-400 handheld so far. It's all from me. I tested that lens on a tripod and it is sharp.
I am thrilled a new G9 may come soon. I ordered 2 new lenses on June 6th and are not here yet. I hope the reason is Panasonic factory producing a lot of G9 mk II :) And one will be for me.
Hi Laurent, Ha yes maybe that's why. I had a long wait for my 9mm lens too. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Great pictures and video
Many thanks Mark!
Great to see another video from you! I am also looking forward to a possible G9 Mark2 hopefully in the near future!
Fingers crossed! Toes crossed!
I was only thinking ‘I wonder how Marlene is these days, it’s been a while since I watched her videos’ only to find i’d been unsubscribed and I have no idea why. Great to see your looking well Marlene and still there for the video and stills community, i’ve learned so much from you over several years, always grateful to you for that. All the best. 🙂 Subcribed again btw.
Thank you for seeking me out! I haven’t produced much new video content lately but hope to get back to a couple videos a month. Restart for us both. Cheers.
@@ImageMaven CZcams on top of everything else, it’s a lot to do, you’re entitled to a break. I think we all work too hard these days. Take care Marlene. Still loving my G9 and GX9 btw.
Hello 😃
I'm also getting sweaty palms at the prospect of an updated G9. I'm especially excited knowing how well my second-hand G9 compares against my GH6. For stills, the GH6 just about keeps up in good lighting.
Good luck getting a G9 to review, especially as Panasonic reached out to a lot of CZcams channels when the S5ii was being promoted.
Frank, I live in hope. And with my fingers crossed. Hopefully if enough people see this video it will attract some attention from the Lumix marketing types.
You are great
You are kind!
Thanks
And thank you so much!
Thanks for another lovely video. Wish I had hawks nesting on my street. Really hope the g9 with the new focusing system is true. Thanks.
I hope so too! We Lumix G9-ers have been waiting a long time for something new that is photo-centric.
@@ImageMaven I know.😂😂
Danke!
Thank you Joy! :)
Looking forward to more videos 🙂
I am hoping to see the most mythical of all cameras, the GX10 😉
Ha that would be great too Michael! Thanks for stopping by. Cheers.
Hello Marlène. I have a trepied Manfrotto 003MF backlite base. It is fully foldable. I use it with Nikon D5300 and Lumix GX9.
Thanks for your videos. Thanks Google translation... I don’t speak English.
Christine from FRance
Hi Christine, Yes, a small tripod is very handy. I need to use mine more often. Thank you for watching and sharing your comment.
Great to see you again Marlene. Nice try getting your hands on a new G9 model. Hey Panasonic if you’re reading the comments, I’d also love to try out any new M43 camera you have in the pipeline 😂😉
If you don't ask for it, you don't get it, right? Cheers.
Great idea on the low hanging fruit! I am too intimidated to snap birds, this might help! ☮️💟
You can do it! That's how I started and I still really enjoy shooting my garden birds. And you don't need a super telephoto if they're close - like at a bird feeder or bird bath.
@@ImageMaven :: The encourage is most appreciated!! ☮️💟
Thank you for your videos. I just made the decision to get a used Panasonic G9 and some glass as I was not happy with my smartphone in capturing birds and wildlife. Once I secure the camera, your videos will be very helpful education. Happy birding! Stay safe.
Great to hear this! It is definitely a step up from a smartphone for birding. What lens did you end up getting? Enjoy!
@@ImageMaven I am looking at the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 100-300mm f/4.0-5.6 II for birding. Do you have any other recommendations to research? Also looking at a 12-60 lens for other photography. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.
I have the 100-300mm, but also purchased the 100-400mm. So I'll be selling my 100-300mm. The 100-400mm is 3x the price though and very heavy by comparison. But I'm sure you can get all of those lenses used. I have the 12-60mm (the f2.8-4 version). It's a great overall lens for that camera. I have other lenses too, but the 100-400mm pretty much stays on my camera all the time, as that's my birding setup.
@@ImageMaven awesome. I’ll start with the 100-300. Practice. Use your tips and the graduate. All the best and again. Thank you!
Hi again. The G9 came in the mail today along with the two lenses. I checked your video catalog and could not find one so apologies if you've done one. What two SD cards would you recommend I purchase? Update, did some research. Just ordered:
SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Card - C10, U3, V30, 4K UHD, SD Card
Can't wait to watch some of your tutorials and start shooting! Thank you in advance!
Very timely release, I was only thinking yesterday that we’d not heard from you in a while and hoped everything was ok. Glad to hear all’s well with you. Panasonic really should reach out to you re a G9 mkii, can’t think of anyone better to Beta test and review than you Marlene 👍
Hi Sue, Yes, I'm here! And thank you for being here today. I really hope that I get to test the next Lumix 4/3 camera and I hope it's an updated G9. Cheers!
Great neighborhood, I wouldn't install the camera to the Monopod with the camera mount. I use the mount of the lense. So the MFT mount only has to cary the camerwaigh and it is better balanced
Yes, great tip. I have recently started using the lens mount. Thanks for the extra nudge and thank you for watching.
I see I’m not alone in the hopeful group that awaits a G9 successor. As soon as its announced my Leica SL and it’s lenses (not many) will be sold 😂 I’ll still have my Leica M10 and M10 Monochrom but my soul longs for a G9 successor. I currently still have a used Olympus E-M1 Mark III that I got for cheap after I sold my G9 in hopes of a successor.
Wow Danny that's quite the set of Leicas you have! There are a few photo trade shows coming up in the fall so I expect the news will be released at one of those.... if history bears repeating. Thanks for stopping by!
Always good to find you've posted a new video. Perhaps you could put them together on a thumb drive for sale as a G9 video reference. I'd buy one.
Great idea Bruce. I do have a couple of CZcams playlists that might suffice. I worry that the G9 will soon by old news because everyone wants to hear about the latest and greatest gear. Thanks for watching!
@@ImageMaven Even if Lumix comes up with a G9 Mk 2 I'll keep my first gen G9 as a second body.
@@brucegraner5901 Oh yes, me too.
Hopefully a GX9ll as well
Wow, now that is a bit of luck :)
The only bird shots I've got this year are a few snaps of local robins.
Take care.
It's a start Mark! Thanks for taking a look. Cheers.
Love your channel...new to g9...from Canon 5D iv....my question is how to tag photos as to where is was taken. Do I have to use the app every time I take a picture or can it be tagged on every photo in the EXIF??? thank you..
Page 221 of the camera manual talks about setting up Location details "in the camera". Download the PDF manual (link in video description) and search "Location" in the search bar of the PDF. In my experience, it's easier to do location tagging upon import in LR. But of course that doesn't work for everyone, especially if you want it permanently attached to the EXIF data of the file. (I moved from Canon 5D mk2 to Lumix M43 about 11 years ago. Never looked back!)
Hi Marlene, always great to see another video from you. Very enjoyable, wanted to know your thoughts on the 100 - 400 vs 100 - 300? What will you do if a G9 MII, I will buy it if it appears. Cheers. Bye Bye.
Hi Don, I love the 100-400mm. I recently took my 100-300mm on vacation and I really missed the extra reach and sharpness. Oh yes, if a G9ii is indeed going to materialize, I will most likely buy it unless Panasonic wants to give me one. That would be fantastic!
I want the 100-400mm. But the cost and fear that I will get a used model that has focus ring or build quality kinda scares me. I also want to aquire the Leica/Lumix 45 Macro as well as the 35 - 100mm as well.
I have the 12 - 35mm 2.8 so that would complete my collection of (9) Lenes for my G9. I think I have overlapped and need to sell some. Great seeing you again and hope to see more soon, always a pleasure. Cheers.
Yes, definitely look for a used 100-400. The 12-35 and 35-100 were my first lenses for my GH3 - 10 years ago. I never use the 35-100mm anymore since I started birding. But both are nice fast lenses. I recently bought the 12-60 and that has also replaced my 12-35, but it's not quite as fast at the long focal length. I also have a couple of primes which stay on the small cameras most of the time.
Hi Marlene, a great video again from you! In this video you uses a monopod. Are there differences between the monopods from different brands? And if so, what is the most important criteria in your opinion to buy this or better this?
The thing with the coffee is done. 😊
Christian
I have 2 monopods. The bigger one (seen in this video) is Aluminum - Benro A48TD. I needs a separate head. I use my Manfrotto Ball head for it. It's quite sturdy and goes very tall. It also has small tripod legs on the bottom. I have a second monopod that is very light and short and can fit in my backpack if I go for a long walk or hiking. It doesn't go as high though so it wasn't suitable for shooting birds high in the trees. I'm not very tall so usually it is good enough. I sometimes take a friend along to film me with my small Lumix G100 for my CZcams videos and I use that smaller monopod for that purpose more than for birding. I suggest you take your camera to a shop and try some out. That's what I did with these two. Hope that helps and thank you for the Coffee support! :)
@@ImageMaven Thank you for you kind answer, Marlene. The maximum height was the main criteria for me to choose my Cullmann Nanomax 490 (I don‘t know if this brand is known in Canada, is it?). And it was not very expensive. Beside this the weight and the length are important for an easy transport on hiking. For bird shooting it is not high enough I think. But I‘m a beginner in this field and so I will gain experiences. Perhaps a new monopod is the result. It is a hobby that has swallowed up like a bottomless pit. 😁 But we choose it. 😀
Greetings from Germany

I was just debating whether to upgrade from my G80 to a G9... so should I wait?
I recently bought a Canon 7Dmark II + 100-400 lens second hand, for bird photography.
It's great, but very heavy. And since I have quite a few lenses for the G80, I was wondering whether they would still fit on the G9 too. Any thoughts? I would continue to use the Lumix for other stuff (city, landscape, macro), it's so light and comfortable! But the G80 lacks quite a few things the G9 does have... so... quite tempted, IF I can keep the same lenses.
Yes all M43 lenses will fit all your M43 cameras like the G80 or G9 and many others -- even OM cameras. Yes Canon dSLR are very heavy and very expensive compared to my Lumix gear. I got rid of mine over 10 years ago. No regrets. And I'm sure you will soon be able to pick up a new G9 for cheap! So waiting depends on your budget and what you plan to use the camera for. I'm asking myself the same question.
@@ImageMaven thanks!
Hi Marlene, have you tried the Olympus EE-1 Dot Sight for birds in flight? I think it helps when the birds are far away!
Hi Xavier, you’re the second person to mention this device. I hadn’t heard of it but I’ll definitely do some research. Thanks for the tip!
Mam can we do bird photography with Lumix zs60 point and shoot with 30x optical zooms
That depends. If the light is good you should be able to get some decent photos. And you should be able to at bird feeders. Try it!
@@ImageMaven mam what's about videography please answer this last question
With experience you can get good photos and videos from any camera. It’s not the camera that has the vision, the creator does. If you need audio, like recorded voice, just make sure whatever camera you get, has a mic Jack.
@@ImageMaven thanks mam
Hi Marlene could you tell me the latest software version of the LUMIX G9 and 100-400 Leica lens
Hi William. All firmware updates for lenses and cameras can be found here: av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/download/index.html#d01
Marlene, I went back 7 years to get your perspective on smething and wondered if you had ever thought to shoot an owl in Post focus mode. It's the only stationary bird, per se, that I think it w ould work on? What do you think?
Honestly have never thought of doing that! Owl encounters are few and far between the past several months. But definitely worth trying out. And great to hear from you again Steve. I know I've been hiding under a bush lately. Appreciate all my G9-ers reaching out now and again. Means a lot!
@@ImageMaven You mean alot to us as well! If we I can be helpful, please make it known!!
Your photos look excellent. I have a G9 and the 100400 but the photos are never great. It's hard to admit it is not the fancy equipment at fault.
Thank you for your honesty. Not many will say that. I am often disappointed with my own photos too. But with practice you will get the photos you want! Cheers.
Hi, you have a Dutch last name., from Groningen in the Netherlands!!???
Yes and Yes! My father was born there and immigrated to Canada after the war.
