- The King expressed “great sadness” that he could not attend Thursday’s Royal Maundy service as the Queen stepped in to distribute Maundy money on his behalf.
Charles, 75, was unable to join the congregation at Worcester Cathedral due to his cancer diagnosis.
Instead, he recorded an audio message, in which he said the traditional Easter ceremony “has a very special place in my heart”.

In his absence, Camilla, 76, became the first consort to take on the monarch’s role of presenting ceremonial coins to retired local pensioners who have supported the church and their communities.

CONSORT!
Why does someone come on every post about the Queen and shout out “consort” as though it’s some sort of insult or lesser degree of Queenship? Yes, Camilla IS the queen consort. That is the descriptive name for the king’s wife. It distinguishes her from a queen regnant such as Queen Elizabeth II. But Camilla’s style/title is Her Majesty The Queen. Every king’s wife has that style/title. Remember Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother? They were all Queen Consorts, but no one called them that. They were all styled/titled as Her Majesty the Queen during the reign of their husbands. It is exactly the same with Queen Camilla. To say “she’s not the Queen, she’s only the Queen Consort” makes no more sense than “That’s not a rose, that’s a yellow rose”.
