  • I review ‘Once’ by James Herbert - which is basically fairy smut with some deeply unnecessary factors.

That intro was awesome, it certainly got my attention lol. I have Haunted by this author in my room and I will see what I think.

'Didn't blow my skirt up' 🤣 I'm gonna steal that... 😛
Also, with regards to the book, yeah a lot of people really hate it. I've read it before, actually re-reading it for the first time in years (don't judge too harshly). I do like the story but I have to agree there is a ridiculous amount of sex to the point where most people just describe it as 'Fairy Porn'! 🤣🤣
I also imagined Hugo as Hugo from The Vicar of Dibley! Obviously because of the name but also the actor who plays Hugo as a boyish, idiotic fool that's easily led... Kinda fit the character for the book.
And as for the word, 'juices'....you'd think a writer could come up with a few more verbs. I'd be pissed as a fart if I took your advice and drank every time I saw that word! However, I do agree this would improve the book greatly. Cheers 🍷🍷🍷

In my opinion, the book is fine and starts of well, but then when it gets to the most WTF moments and other things like that, kind of ruins the story in places, and I feel that it gets a bit sickening in places, and I nearly felt like throwing the book out of my window, but I think personally that it would have been a lot better if there was more of a fight against the villains with Thom and the Faeries on the good side, etc, but I did like it, but I wouldn’t start reading James Herbert with Once.
I would start with The Rats series and all the older ones, and ‘The Secret Of Crickley Hall’ before reading this one.
While reading it, I pictured James Norton as Thom, with Emma Stone as Nell Quick, Lily James as Jennet, Henry Cavill as Hugo and possibly Michael Gambon as Sir Russell Bleeth, and Warwick Davis voicing the Elf and some of the other fairy characters I think, if it was made into a movie or something.

Love the casting! 😊 I did read The Rats 🐀 previously but perhaps Herbert just isn’t the author for me…

"A Midsummers Perv Dream", with best intentions the rough idea may have turned out alright. As a means of being introduced to this land of fairie folk and fantasy.
But I laugh in reflection at the "WTF moments" you mention, I thought in a few instances "less is more", to the point you ask yourself what am I reading?.
Felt like these were a compendium of "erotic fantasies" from Mr Herbert which would have been best left to himself. Stitched together to make up an Adult Fairytale, which it falls short.
