It was the mid 80's, I was 11 years old & stuck in hospital recovering from an operation. My eldest brother visited me & had finished reading The Rats on his way to see me. He left it with me & needless to say that was my introduction to James Herbert books. A year later I was reading Stephen King & have been hooked on both ever since.

I live in a village just outside Horsham but travel backwards and forwards to my hometown of Hove regularly. I drive past a couple of times a week and I'm pretty sure I've been to a service at the church, but it might have been it's sister church, St Gile's.

Great video Paul, and loved the information. Thank you also to Barry! What a star!
I was dismayed by the state of the surrounding land of the church - especially the graveyard. It was so badly over-grown in some places, and an absolute mud-bath in others. Some of the older gravestones were in such a bad state of repair and this reflected upon the Church - making it seem like the Church itself didn't care for the state of these obviously older stones and the residents. Surely they could put out an appeal for help from local gardeners or local'ish' gardening companies who could get together and help to keep certain parts of the graveyard in better condition. From simply mowing the grass to clearing the over-grown areas, and then someone(s) who know about removing all the moss and whatever it is which is growing over the stones - leaving the whole of the church and it's residents in a much better state. The Church surely could pull together and get a radio appeal, a local newspaper(s) appeal and even an appeal on Facebook, for say an hour a week from people, to begin the clean up, and then the continual upkeep and care.
OK... stepping down off my soapbox, picking it up, tucking it under my arm, and exiting stage left.
Great report Paul. ~ Cobs (GB)

Horror not being my cup of tea, the closest I ever came to rats was watching them late at night, perform their acrobatics in the New York City subway, as I made my way home after class.
The size of small cats - and totally fearless, they made big, black garbage bags come alive on the platform, as they went looking for a late night snack.
Lovely church, Paul - and THANK You for bringing attention to such a talented storyteller.
Wishing You a Happy Easter, and as always, looking forward to Your next clip!💕

Excellent one Paul, I read all the early stuff, rats trilogy, fog , fluke + few others but the rats I read while doing night shift at Hampstead underground station, reading the chapter where the rats over run a tube train then invade a station ....running up the spiral stairs where they find the station inspectors office with a member of staff inside .....where was I......... in office at top of the spiral stairs... lolol common sense tells you it's just a book but I tell you I was very "jumpy" that week of nights. think he must have done some homework while writing the Rats as a lot of underground stations (especially Northern line) have similar layouts having the station office top of the spiral stairs. Always thought his books would make great films wonder why they never did....shame. Great video Paul, next time.

What's the difference between Stephen King and James Herbert?
    About 300 pages of filler.
    Herbert WAS the king.
No filler chapters, just well crafted, well written horror. Add to that he wrote about areas I knew, east London, the west end and so on. I've never seen the Blackwall tunnel in the same way since I read "The Fog"!💭😬
