Regard Ninjeto. Original Shinobi were Chinese warrior monks, who live as hermits in Japanese mountains. Giving for example origin of Tengu. Those sword masters commonly train early Samurai, after they switch from using a bow. Due to introduction of firearms. Over time they blended with the late type of Shinobi. Who work primarily as spy and generally could not afford the sword. Ninjeto is something introduced by modern descendants of those monks, as something what theoretically could be done by local smith. Even if it was extremely rare if ever happen.

Oops! Mistake! That's NOT Kabuki, which is a play with human beings. That's Bunraku which is a puppet theater. The puppeteers usually wear black robes BUT not always. There's another style called dezukai without black robes where you can see them. Kabuki DOES use black clad stage hands called Kuroko. Kings and Generals messed this one up sorry to say!
the history of kabuki is another interesting story, all the way up to the 21st century. And kuroko are present in many different types of Japanese theater

A popular disguise shinobi used was a shakuhachi player, because they wear a basket over their head, a great excuse to not let your face be seen. City guards were taught to recognize a few songs to ask shakuhachi players to play when they entered town to prove they were actual musicians and not spies.
Anyone visiting Japan wanting to see the ninja villages, Koga doesn't really have anything to see, but Iga's ninja village and museum are quite fun and there are other famous places nearby worth seeing, like the Akame waterfalls where the Iga ninja trained, Ise jingu, Japan's holiest shrine, Suzuka racing circuit, Nagashima Spaland which is home to the longest roller coaster in the world. The map made it look like Koga is in Mie preference as well, but it's on the opposite side of the mountains in Shiga prefecture.
Welcome, three generations of my family came from Nagoya (at least, we're not entirely certain where they originated from before that differing theories). I always enjoy returning there.

There's already an Assassin's Creed game that takes place in Japan, it is called Ghost of Tsushima and it's better than anything Ubisoft could ever make.

While I love Ghost of Tsushima, the game takes place during the Mongol Invasion. Assassin's Creed Shadows is the Sengoku period which will be done justice in the game. Mirage actually brought back the stealth and I have faith Shadows will live up to many other amazing Assassin's Creed games.

Ninja also translates to "those who endure" or "the sufferers" (忍者). As they mostly came from the peasant class, it's a fitting name.
"Ninja" are mostly samurai, not peasants.
We really don't know if either is true. There isn't much information on who exactly was a ninja. That shows either of how effective they where or that we overestimate their existence.@@paulodelima5705

@@paulodelima5705Nowhere in the video does it say that. In fact, it says the opposite, that samurai sometimes were trained as shinobi or worked alongside them. The vast majority of ninjas were spies and scouts, which were drawn from the most numerous parts of an army, the peasants, as well as the occasional merchants.

It is an irony that one of the most recently popular story about ninja/shinobi depicts them wearing brightly-coloured outfit, fighting en masse in open battlefield, and utilising 9 kaiju-sized beasts as ultimate weapons, totally unlike the real-life counterparts

Yeah I know I've seen the videos of medieval sword fighting "experts" claiming it's impossible to draw but as someone that trained in ninjutsu in the Jinnenkan for 13 years drawing over the shoulder is a real thing. But the point of putting it over your shoulder was to climb and infiltrate, then you'd put it back to normal before fighting unless you were really put on the spot.

Yes and no. Ghost of Tsushima does a pretty poor job at portraying the 13th century. It feels like 16th century and is filled with The Last Samurai-style of honor-bullshit to boot.
Shame that Shogun 2: Total War didn't do a Mongol Invasion expansion.

In 16th century Japan, there were many communities that aimed for oligarchic politics, not just Iga and Koga. The Ikko Ikki, who opposed the daimyo with religious solidarity, and their military allies, the Saika-shu, the Murakami Pirates, who controlled the trade routes in the Seto Inland Sea, etc. If you don't mind, I would like to cover these diverse regional groups in the next video.

Ubisoft has nothing on Ghost of Tsushima, an Assassin's Creed game set in Japan that is already the best in the series.
I rather take the one set in the more interesting 16th century.
One is set in the 1200s the other is set in the late 1500s. Thats a big enough gap for it to feel different

Developers of Ghost of Tsushima did not actually portray the 13th century well at all because their goal was to give people the image of a samurai most people have in their heads, which is more 16th century than 13th century.

Ubisoft does not have a good track record of historical accuracy nor do they have a good record of respecting it.
I mean Assassin's Creed was always meant to take huge creative liberties they've never tried to pass it off as historical fact. It's just a setting and theme and if that gets newcomers interested in history than all the better, they can learn the real histories surrounding these semi-historical characters.
It is not even historical accuracy that is the problem anymore, it is woke politics being elevated above everything else, including historical accuracy. This latest "entertainment product" seems to be the worst yet - it is set in feudal Japan - one of the most conservative, nationalistic and patriarchal societies ever, and yet the two main characters are a woman and a black man...
@@Vladimir-ey7to Yasuke aside Japan is no where near as patriarchal as people think historically. All Imperial nobility was descended from a goddess, for centuries the highest nobility ruled through the mother's side of the family. Quite a few women gained fame through combat, particularly in the Sengoku Jidai where one woman served as daimyo for a period of time and many other women led castle defenses. Nobunaga's own wife was a particularly interesting figure with a number of conspiracy theories surrounding her. But most importantly the ninja broke many societal roles and both female ninja (kunoichi) and androgynous males played significant roles. I'm not surprised in the least that the ninja character of this game is an Androgynous looking (presumably female) character, and Yasuke while a tad surprising actually makes a lot of sense given the ongoing Assassin vs Templar plots of the series. But yeah there is some woke agenda going on its just not as unbelievable as people want to make it out.
@@FShani While I do not strictly disagree with what you are saying, I do believe that you are presenting a somewhat of a revisionist picture of the Japanese society of the time. Yes, it did happen that women from the high nobility would, rarely and for a brief period of time, assume "manly" duties when no high nobility male was available - same as in feudal Europe. It was strictly seen as an exception to the rule however and only reserved for "dire times" and as a last resort.
On the topic of female ninja - those just didnt exist. At least not in the way that many modern entertainment products make it seem. Something very important that this video doesnt make particularly clear, is that the number of actual ninja was very, very low. Maybe as low as a few dozen at any given time and definitely no more than a few hundred. And they needed to be men, because there were many places and activities where women just werent allowed or couldnt easily blend in, especially lowborn women. This does not mean that a woman in that society could not be a smart and cunning spy, a resourceful thief, an observant information gatherer, a master seducer, or even a deadly (non combat) assassin - she totally could and some definitely were. But not as a ninja. In fact, women were often employed BY ninja. Women were also often hired by wealthy patrons, to do tasks that a ninja also could. But this doesnt make them ninja. If this upcoming AC title has the female character from the trailer do nothing else but information gathering and thieving (and seducing, but no AAA developer would ever show this anymore), than I hereby pledge to make an official apology on all my social media accounts for accusing this game of being detrimentally woke. But we all know that this character would be a wall running, shuriken throwing, throat-slitting ninja. Which is wrong on pretty much all levels.
And finally, the black dude. There were literally millions of japanese warriors from that era. Some were lowborn peasants, some were highborn samurai and some were even semi-mythological superhumans. Instead, the developers chose to focus on the one and only black samurai, who wasnt even a samurai. I dont even know what to say about this bullcrap of a decision.
It is not really a cool franchise if the only things you can parkour on are brick, low walls, fences, ladders, and all that sticking-out stuff.
It's way cooler if your character has insane grip strength, cool animations, endless energy for striding along the vast map, fingers that can seep into rock, the tiniest of crevasses.
It's cool if they even add historical figures in their game, gives a better sense of immersion. Even adding a real place like an ancient tree or 1 singular shrine that is placed in the exact spot of its real-life counterpart is good.

One thing, a merchant would not be considered a trusted commoner above a peasant and trusted like a monk. Merchants sit below the peasant farmer in the social hierarchy of feudal Japan. A peasant farmer was more highly regarded because they worked the lands and provided the food that fed the nation, or more to say their daimyo. On the other hand, despite their social standing, a well to do merchant might have greater access to samurai and daimyo than a simple peasant farmer depending on what exactly the merchant sells and if they directly to samurai and daimyo.

Ok so as a long time watcher of another history buff youtube creator who has a lot of dealings with the Ninja..., the fact you called out the myth of ninja's wearing all black as a falsehood made the the jingle of "Real ninja's wear blue" go off in my head.
I used to practice koga ninjutsu and we used the wakazashi, short version of katana. Better suited for close up and indoor use and didnt look out of place as it was also a samurai's backup weapon.

I can’t remember if you e explained ashigaru, as they often acted in the scouting roles which were in the broad range of shinobi no mono descriptions. Ashigaru would also be a good stand alone subject to explain that the bulk of Japanese armies were made of commoners.

Yup, they're hipeing the dude so much, as if he became some famous warrior, but his mentions are scarce and in the end Mitsuhide lets him leave after leaving his sword.
That part was probably a talking point requirement of the sponsorship, similar to how every narrator would mention Bokksu has a 'different theme of snacks every month' or NordVPN can 'unlock content from all around the world'.
It is widely believed in Japan that he was kept as a sandal bearer at best and wasn't even allowed to bear arm. Just think about this: Oda was one of if not the most paranoid warlord in all of Japanese history, he took a liking to Yasuke but that didn't mean that he was going to entrust his life upon someone he might not even consider Japanese. Give it another 30 years and we will all see our national historic heroes becoming African or having something to do with Africa in these Western remakes.
Just put a black doode in a completely unrelated and unrealistic scenario, then give him ridiculous plot armor and call it "diversity".

Is there any historical evidence Yasuke was a samurai and not a retainer?
Another very common misconception. Samurai was a social class, they were primarily a warrior caste; but not all samurai were warriors. Samurai who were primarily warriors were referred to as bushi; while non-samurai warriors were referred to as ashigaru to distinguish them. Most of the samurai class were retainers to a liege, a daimyo, who was also of the samurai class. Technically daimyo were retainers to the shogun, again from the samurai class, who was in turn a retainer to the emperor. Those of the samurai class who were not retainers to a liege were referred to as ronin.
With that out of the way; historically Yasuke was made a samurai by the simple fact that he was taken as a retainer and given a title (kosho), land, and a stipend. This is the way those from non-samurai families like Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Todo Takatora officially became samurai and could rise in rank to become daimyo and de facto shogun.

@@user-dx6bv2pe1s Samurai weren't a noble class per se. Some samurai families were descended from the original Chinese style court nobles (kuge) who were related to the Imperial family. These families were usually the most influential and most daimyo clans were descended from or at least claim descent from some of the more prominent kuge families from before the establishment of the first Shogunate (The Kamakura) in the 12th Century; the main four being the Fujiwara, Minamoto (who established the first Shogunate), Taira, and Tachibana clans.
The Oda, for example, first claimed to be descended from the Fujiwara clan, then later switched to be descended from the Taira clan. It was later discovered that the Oda clan was descended from both the Fujiwara and Taira... along with the Inbe clan, which was also a prominent kuge family. And it was well known that Tokugawa Ieyasu (born Matsudaira Takechiyo) was descended from the Minamoto family via the Matsudaira; which made him becoming Shogun after Sekigahara a formality even before the Emperor declared him so a couple years later.
After the Meiji restoration (where the kuge regained most of their former power and influence); Emperor Meiji merged the kuge and the daimyo families into a single aristocracy called the kazoku. This was done mainly to buffer the recently restored Imperial authority against the still powerful daimyo families; but also to mitigate infighting due to animosity between the kuge and daimyo. To give some context, there were 142 kuge families and 285 daimyo families when the kazoku was established.

They are two different ways to read the same characters (On'yomi vs Kun'yomi). Historically it was always pronounced Shinobi, short for Shinobi-no-mono. The ninja pronunciation is more modern. Both are technically correct but historically it always the former.
Finally a video that puts to rest a lot of the falsehoods about 'ninja'. I read some texts that 'shinobi' and 'ninja' referred to the same type of individual. This at least somewhat verifies that the legends of the shinobi originated with the Ikko-Ikki resistance against Oda Nobunaga. I would like next to see one focusing on the 'ashigaru'.
No no, they had nothing to do with the Ikko-ikki and were established far earlier than that religious movement. Ikki is an umbrella term for peasant revolts and the Sengoku Jidai era had numerous Ikki groups. And the Ikko-Ikki clashed with many/opposed all samurai clans, Oda is just particularly famous for putting down some of the worst revolts of the time.

Shinobi... the last time I saw that word, I think it was on an NES cartridge. The game, if I recall at all, gratuitously employed a great many myths featured in the video. Where was this myth-busting to be found in 1991? :)
To suggest Kenshin died of esophageal or stomach cancer seems entirely plausible, if not quite likely. However, to unequivocally state that the cancer was a result of his heavy drinking habit seems wildly speculative.

The new assassins creed game is possibly be about nobunagas side. As yasuke is a subordinate of nobunaga, it is safe to say naoe is probably a shinobu under nobunagas control as well.
More likely Naoe is a Tokugawa aligned ninja that despised Nobunaga but nonetheless finds a common ally in Yasuke escaping Akechi Mitsuhide's treachery. Yasuke seeks to repay Nobunaga for his advancement by avenging him, only to uncover a much deeper conspiracy surrounding all 3 of the unifiers. There are so many conspiracy theories surrounding Akechi Mitsuhide's betrayal that can be played around with here from the death of Mitsuhide's mother, whether Nobunaga's primary wife Nohime (aka Kicho) was really an assassin (and whether loyal or not did she actually survive Nobunaga's death?), and what was the real relationship between Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Hashiba Hideyoshi at the time) and Mitsuhide. Plus the Akechi family remain insanely popular in Japanese fiction.
@@FShani that does sound more like something westerners would do to spin the story. Japan reveres nobunaga. Tokugawa has always been considered a loyal retainer of nobunaga so what you said doesnt make sense realistically and “historically” with respect to japanese views.
I mean im still sitting here waiting for them to redo AC1 historically accurate, where the order were destroyed/dispersed/disbanded by mongol invasion under ghengis khan and not some “templar order.” Historically, the mongols destroyed the order along with the kwarazsimian empire for disrespecting his envoy.
@@ed.7856 I wasn't saying Tokugawa betrays Nobunaga but the survivors of Nobunaga's invasion of Iga flocked to Tokugawa, and Ieyasu had his share of grudges against Nobunaga as well so that's not out of the realm of possibility. Besides this is a Western made game that always takes huge creative liberties with history. It's not hard to poke holes in ACs historical accuracies they're all over every game, the series really should be treated as an alternative history series.
