I'm an aspiring meteorologist/storm chaser, and this video and so many others you've made on this kind of thing really help out. It's been 4 years since you made this, but I think it will continue to help people like me for many years to come. And like some other people said, you're the only channel I could find that makes stuff like this, so thank you so much!
i’m a senior in highschool planning to major in atmospheric sciences / meteorology. I’m looking for a big school right now. Leaning towards UW-Madison, Oklahoma, Penn State, Colorado State, CU Boulder, Ohio State, Etc. super interested in the research of severe storms and tornadoes. Overall a huge natural disasters enthusiast and if I decide to go in a different direction it’d probably be towards geophysics like earthquakes and tsunamis!!! loved the video!
Hey! I am an AOS major at uw-madison
@@emiliadeino Ayoooo UW gang
how’d it go??
Wow... It's pretty comforting hearing this all from someone who has gone through it. Also nice to know there are answers to these questions! Much thanks and we all really appreciate what you do. Every view is another person knowing more about the met world. Keep at it!
This video was sooo helpful! You’re pretty much the only person I could find on CZcams that talks abt this stuff
Aw so glad these videos can help!
MeteoTechWx did you look into any other schools in NC? I’m looking into uncc and nc state but idk much abt their programs.
This is an awesome video! I'm currently attending Valparaiso University in Indiana and I would definitely recommend it for anyone who is looking for a smaller school with a great reputation. The students have great relationships with the teachers (we even call all of them by their first names lol) and they are able to focus on the undergrads since there isn't a graduate program. And yes we also have a storm chasing class every summer :D
Let’s gooooo! Hoosier State!
I was bent on going to OU, but I graduated from the University Of Central Arkansas. I started out in Physics but I quickly changed majors to what eventually became Mass Communications & Geography. I discovered that meteorology wasn't just a bunch of Physics & Calculus, and I could be involved in earth & atmospheric sciences in a way that I could handle. The Geography Department had a lot of the same coursework as the Mississippi State University BMP Certificate. So, I took a brochure from the MSU BMP and the NWS requirements for GS-1341 Meteorological Technicians, and was able to cobble out a Geography Minor that led to a Broadcast Meteorology internship at a Little Rock, TV Station. I've been in LR Radio for 23 years. I'm also an Associate Member of The AMS, A Member Of The NWA, and I'm regularly on the air talking about the weather. The moral of my story is, you don't necessarily have to do all 4 years at a far away University. You can begin at home, & transfer to a meteorology program that suits your needs.
This is a very helpful video! I would be very interested in a video talking about the various fields of atmospheric science and what they entail. I know that there are a lot of different branches and I’d be really intrigued to see as many as possible. Thank you!
i love ur videos, i've learned so much from these!! thank you so much 💕🌪
I’m starting my meteorology classes (junior year) at FSU in the fall. Apparently seniors in the meteorology program are encouraged to complete their own thesis project. Super excited either way! Go Noles!!!
That’s great!!! Hope you’re doing well!
Loved the video! Keep up the wonderful work :)) I’ve recently been accepted to my chosen college and I’m really excited!
Thanks so much and CONGRATULATIONS!! :D
i keep coming back to this video to help me decide what college i plan on attending in the upcoming fall for meteorology... i just wanna say thank you for making it, it has truly helped me in my applications process.
i’m still waiting to hear back from NC state but i have also been accepted into George mason and valpo university.... do you have any advice that could help with deciding where to go? it’s been difficult since i can’t visit colleges right now.
Hi! Aw I’m so glad to hear that this video was helpful! I know NC State is a fantastic school but don’t know anything about the others unfortunately. Since visiting schools is difficult these days, some things you could consider are calling and talking to the professors at each, looking up what research/internship opportunities each has and which one fits what you want to do, how big are the class sizes, etc. Then there’s also tuition price, distance from home and that stuff too. Hope this helped! Best of luck :)
This video was very helpful for me...I’m a junior in high school and I’m also interested in research meteorology and studying tornadoes. I live here in eastern NC so this video really helped me with the college application process. Thanks!!
Glad that this video could help! :)
Just here to watch vids oh lit what part Fayetteville?
Hello,
Great video.
I am interested if you could make a video for “what you could do with an atmospheric Science degree.” Please and thank you!!
I agree with all of this advice. I got my undergrad in meteorology at SUNY-Oswego, which is a smaller school than SUNY-Albany or especially OU and the smaller school allows for more interaction with the professors and other studenst. I'm working on my graduate work at OU, since SUNY-Oswego didn't have a graduate program and the size of the school was a culture shock.
I am kinda in High School (*just kidding i'm in 3rd grade*) but I wnated to be a meteorologist for a long time now and now I get the best meteorologist to tell me what college to go to even though I'm going to college in 8 years but thanks so much and Happy Meteorology Monday!
Current senior at Oklahoma here. I'm majoring in Meteorology, minoring in mathematics as well as broadcast meteorology. I agree with most of your advice but in my experience the last several years, I've seen many undergrad students get MANY research opportunities. Even our capstone class is strictly research based. Our classes are in the National Weather Center, which correct me if I'm wrong, but no other school out there provides that kind of experience. With the NWC right on campus, OU is the best research university in the nation for atmospheric science. You can share an elevator with the pros that are doing this every day, as an undergrad. Also not to mention: the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication has one of, if not THE best student run news programs in the nation: OU Nightly. So if you want to do broadcast, there ya go.
I may be biased, but I think the University of Oklahoma is the greatest place to be if you want to go into the Atmospheric Sciences, regardless of which career route you take. No other university, big or small, expensive or cheap, can touch it and the experience it provides.
Great video I currently attending Mississippi State university for broadcasting meteorology best broadcasting college in the country .
This is why I'm going to community college first and then going to a 4 year after getting my A.S
I go to Mississippi State University and doing Broadcasting. 1 in 3 on air Mets have a degree from MSU! We have an awesome broadcast met program here!
Same but I’m using their online program. #HailState
@@niecsanders You should come down and visit for our Symposium in March! i'm secretary of the club so just contact me on twitter @BryceJonesWx!
wow! how good is there like operational met class?
Mississippi State trains one third of broadcast meteorologists
Awesome video! I am planning to enter my senior year of high school and I want to pursue a degree and career in atmospheric sciences/meteorology. I'm looking at UCLA, U of A, CU Boulder, UNR, UUtah, Embry-Riddle, and other schools like Texas A&M and OU. I'm very interested in tornadoes, hurricanes, and other types of severe weather, and I would hope to do research on this as well (am unsure whether I want to do only undergrad or both undergrad and grad). However, I would still be happy working in other areas of meteorology such as climatology. Would you recommend any other schools around the Southwestern U.S? Also, do you have any other tips and tricks for pursuing an atmospheric sciences/meteorology degree?
You’ve got a great list! I’m not very familiar with school in the Southwest other than some you’ve already got. My biggest tip for getting that ATMS degree is be prepared for some long nights and take advantage of your professors/TAs/tutors if you need help! Everything builds on itself especially junior and senior year so it’s important to learn the concepts. Best of luck to you, future meteorologist!
Im a junior in high school currently and want to be an NWS meteorologist. I’m considering the University of Oklahoma, penn state, northern Vermont university, and a few other smaller colleges but those are my top 3. Which ones would be best? Or are there other ones I should consider?
Edit: it's been 9 months and I'm finally done applying to colleges so I thought I'd update. I got accepted into all of the colleges I listed, but I will be attending the University of Oklahoma!
Hi, I'm international student preparing for college admission for meteorology major. I wanna know how is(or was) your first year at OU!! Isn't it hard to form great relationship with the professors?
Honestly I’ve been interested in weather since I was a kid I do best in science based classes so I’m not worried about the science part, but the math part makes me worried I’m extremely bad at math so I’m worried about that, but I don’t know if I should give up or if I’ll be able to power through
I'm very interested in Meteorology and I'm fascinated by tornadoes so I'm leading toward UAH among some other schools.
UAH has a great program! My school partnered with them on the Vortex Southeast project and they were awesome!
I got accepted into Oklahoma and I really wanted to go but now I’m having some doubts about it being too much. I trying to decide between that and a more local school.
Yeah that’s a tough decision. If you’re worried about Oklahoma being too much work load wise I’d definitely suggest talking to the professors there and getting their thoughts and opinions and learning what expectations they’ll have for new students.
Hi! Awesome video! I’m still in high school but I’m absolutely sure that I want to study Atmospheric Science in college. I specifically want to study tropical meteorology, I’m absolutely intrigued by hurricanes. What schools would you recommend? Also, would you recommend any schools in Canada?
Hey thanks! For Tropical Met you can’t go wrong with any Florida university. FSU, UMiami, FIU, FIT, and UFlorida are great options! I don’t know anything about Canadian schools but I would guess schools closer to the tropics would be better
Hello! I’m really intrigued by meteorology (I’ve been that way for as long as I can remember) and specifically in the field of severe weather. However, I’m also really intrigued by the broadcast aspect of the field. What are the best-known schools for broadcast? Thank you!
Hey! That’s awesome :) I’m not sure which schools are the best for broadcast (neither of us is a broadcast met). Maybe the same big names like Penn State, Oklahoma, Purdue, Florida State, and Washington? You’ll have to do some research. Sorry!
@@MeteoTechWx no problem! thank you!
What would be a good school to go to study Snow forecasting? The other forms of weather were cool to learn abt in science in MS & watching TWC (The Weather Channel) but Snow & forecasting it esp caught my interests as a 10-15 yr old.
i am also interested in snow forecasting!! did you end up applying to certain schools for this??
what about a tech college such as viginia tech. what would it be like
So I got accepted into Penn State, SUNY Albany, and the University of Delaware and I applied to NCSU but am concerned that I won’t get accepted, I’m wondering if I would be behind if I went to a community college and transferred? Also, I’ve read that most students/atmospheric scientists need a masters to get hired, do you know if that’s true, and if so, would it be worth it to the combined BS/MS program that SUNY Albany and Penn state have?
You can 100% go to CC then transfer! As for the MS degree it certainly does boost your chances of getting hired.
You seem really cool! I’m assuming you go to AMS? It’d be cool to meet you at the next one (assuming the world hasn’t ended by then lol)
That’d be awesome! Haven’t been able to go to AMS the past couple years due to work, but hoping to go back next year (assuming the world is still here 😂)
What is AMS?
Hello, I’m a sophomore and high school and I’m very interested in severe weather/ tornado meteorology I’m kind of having troubles finding smaller universities that have good programs for that specifically, are there any websites or anything you recommend to research different schools. Also do you know if there’s anything I can do at my age to get involved into meteorology? Thank you so much!
Hi! That’s awesome that you’re already wanting to get involved in meteorology and look at colleges! I haven’t found any websites that directly lay out small university options for severe weather meteorology unfortunately. I think the major may be too small. What you can do is search small universities with Atmospheric Sciences programs by state and start there. That’s how I found UNC Asheville. As for what you can do to get involved there are a bunch of things! If you’re near an NWS office they do events and tours throughout the year like weather balloon launches, forecasting workshops, etc. Last year the Hurricane Hunter planes flew around the country and gave tours as well. There’s a bunch! I know the American Meteorological Society also puts on events, but for all of this you’ll probably have to google and see if any of it happens where you live. Hope this helps!
If I'm interested in working at a forecast office, would a big school or small school be best?
Either! Just ask whichever school if their program offers all the classes needed to get into the NWS as a forecaster before you decide.
@@MeteoTechWx Thank you!
