  • @impishmisconception7762

    I have a question: I have only seen tornados in movies like this or when I watch storm chasers on the TV or CZcams, so I don't know much about them... Spoiler alert for the ending... My question is near the end of the movie, while Jo and Bill are running from the F5 tornado they find a little shed and Bill says that if they anchor themselves they might have a chance, so they tie themselves to some pipes and the tornado goes right over them, we see them lifted right into the air. If that was real, could a person actually survive that? Is being anchored like that and physically in the tornado, like Bill and Jo, survivable? Again, I don't know anything about tornados but I feel like it would suck the air out of them and suffocate them, am I right on that or no?

    With the Fujiwhara Effect thing, I like how that being used incorrectly could still be explained in the movie. Now I don't think it was intentional, and the filmmakers were just off, but the character who gets excited and calls the twins the Fujiwhara effect could have just been wrong. Rather than the film makers be wrong the character could just be wrong, especially because the Tornado Wrangler team don't have formal education like Tyler and Kate. Which is not a slight against these characters, I love how even though they were PHD scientists, they still got so excited and were nerding out.

  • @derbydriver
    @derbydriver Před 17 dny

    I don't view the original movie as though it was trying to be accurate in the science. It's as though Jan de Bont wanted to make a monster movie, but didn't want to do something quite so unrealistic... so the monster in his film is a Tornado (well, a series of Tornadoes.) Something real, something scary, something that you might ACTUALLY encounter in real life, unlike a 30ft tall mutant crushing cars and eating people... but at the same time, he wanted to be loose enough with reality to inject as much fun into the film as possible. You look at Jan de Bont's prior movie, Speed, and it absolutely stretches the bounds of reality despite faithfully adhering to it in some ways as well. The very first scene in Speed features a cop car flying 20 feet through the air and landing gracefully. It also shows a bus jumping a gap in a freeway, and numerous other clearly exaggerated instances of physics, for the sake of fun and entertainment. I see Twister through the same lens - it tethers its ridiculousness to reality juuuuust enough so you take it juuuuust seriously enough to care about what's happening. These movies were products of a time when movies could push reality over the edge without become self parodies, which is what we get today - either a movie is trying to be realistic, or it's making fun of itself and being as ridiculous as it wants to be. Speed and Twister came from an era where those lines were blurrier, and nobody questioned it - we just had fun at the theater. Nowadays, the way people treat movies like this would be akin to riding a roller coaster, then asking "What's the point of this? It just goes around in circles and doesn't take you anywhere". Twisters, though it continues to grow on me, is somewhat missing that crucial element. It feels like it's trying to dive in and swim free, but also feels like it gets scared in the open water and swims back to grab onto the ladder repeatedly. It's like it can't decide between being a reasonably realistic movie about storm chasing, which would remove a lot of the over the top action elements... and throwing back to the less realistic, but insanely fun style of Twister. Even Reed Timmer or Sean Casey's intercepts, though amazing and thrilling in their own right, aren't the grand spectacle of the tornado encounters in these films, so embellishing on real life is absolutely necessary- and the film does this pretty well at times... other times, it seems trepidatious about it. Twister is responsible for my love of the 1994 Dodge Ram. It may also be responsible for my love of hard rock/metal combined with symphony orchestra. It's ABSOLUTELY responsible for my interest in tornadoes, and I have a fondness for the specific style of cinematography that has influenced video projects I've worked in in the years since, not even realizing the connection. So Nostalgia weighs heavy on my take on these two films... and it's a bit unfair to Twisters. All of this being said, I adore that Twisters does strip away a lot of "modernities" in film making, and goes back to practical effects where possible, and a "minor stakes" plot rather than something where the entire universe is on the line or something. If I were to make Twisters into a perfect sequel, I'd do away with the land developer subplot entirely and just have Kate learn that Tyler's crew is more than meets the eye, I'd actually have the trucks get damaged so they don't seem so invincible and safe (Come on Dodge, people understand that even the best vehicles on the market will get damaged by Tornadoes - you didn't have to have an invincibility clause in your licensing agreement), and I'd have had the crew try to intercept and (fail to) kill the tornado that hits the rodeo, rather than be totally surprised by it. But... ultimately, as far as sequels go, I'd rank this alongside Tremors 2 as a totally worthy sequel that calls back to the original just enough, but finds a way to be its own thing, fun in its own right, and worthy of its own praise - not comparison.

    I can not believe you guys did not hop all over the guy driving INTO a tornado... That to me is not realistic at all. The Augers on his truck also I feel would just dig holes and not do much if anything at all to anchor the Truck. The fact the truck has no skirts to block the wind from getting underneath it yet it DOES have the push button AUGERS adds to the redneck side more than the realism side. Love the channel thus far guys! Good job!

    Fun fact about the Natchez Tornado of 1840: During 1840, the deaths of enslaved people were not counted, and because of that, we may never know exactly how many fatalities there actually were. One complaint I had for the film is that Tyler Owens has to explain to Kate how the EF rating works. She should have known that in the beginning of the film when her and her friends were getting it wrong - they’re meteorology students, that’s rudimentary stuff… but ok, maybe they skipped that day. But, by the time Tyler explains it to her, she DEFINITELY has no excuse not to understand it. It was just an odd choice to have him explain the EF rating scale to her, when they had the reporter character in the movie specifically to give the characters someone to explain things to for the audience.

    A couple of things. Twisters has Dorothy V (Not Dorothy IV that got sucked up into the tornado in Twister). However, in Twister they stated they made 4 of them, so it's still something that shouldn't have existed unless Jo & Bill had made another one for another attempt after the end of Twister. As for the driving through the farmhouse, and the flying cow..... I think it would have been too obvious a callback, so instead it was a more subtle Chicken Coup with a hen landing on their truck after everything had settled. So, I think they did at least pay homage without doing so "in your face." Just a continuity issue with the original Twister, they drove into the farmhouse with it being on its side..... inside they drove up a staircase, but then came out the other end at ground level with the house still laying on its same side in the same position in the road. Most people are too involved in the excitement of the scene to really pay much attention to that.... but after watching the movie dozens of times, it tends to really stand out.

  • @derbydriver
    @derbydriver Před 24 dny

    Dorothy is pretty easy to explain. Muskogee State College funded Dorothy 1-4, and when the OG team succeeded in the experiment, they likely built more, which were deployed by various teams over the years. There’s probably more than just Dorothy V, I bet they made at least 4 of them. Since the OG team learned to anchor it, Dorothy V probably survived a few direct hits over the years but because they didn’t have time to correctly deploy, they lost Dorothy V this time around. Bill and Jo’s research contributed to the science and storm chasing tactics being used in this film, but they are not directly referenced because their data is more Important to the chasers than them as idols. I actually kind of prefer this approach over deifying Bill and Jo. Jonas would want to be a celebrity, Bill and Jo just wanted to help.

    Great points you brought up, and I'm not going to rehash anything you touched upon. Having seen the movie in the theater, and now having gotten to watch the movie twice at home, there's one major flaw in Par's strategy. Triangulating the sensors makes sense for getting a really clear 3-D analysis of the storm. My issue is why does the triangulation require getting directly in front of the tornado's path? It would be much safer to set one directly behind the tornado, and the other two sensors to the front right and front left. It still involves risk should the tornado shift direction, but not being completely suicidal ~ since they have to have the sensors within 300 meters of the tornado. The first tornado they attempted and failed was moving at 17 miles per hour..... that's more than 450 meters per minute..... it's moving away from the other two sensors, and towards the front sensor.... literally giving them a window of seconds to drop it and get away from the debris zone..... as I said, suicidal. Which brings me to point number two, having to pull the sensors out, anchor them to the ground, turn them on, and get back into the vehicles..... now you've narrowed your window of opportunity to about 2-5 seconds. If the sensors require being within 300 meters, then they need to be mounted on the vehicle and operated from inside the vehicle. If the debris can take out the sensors being mounted, then the debris will take them out being deployed as well. So it just makes more sense to attempt the triangulation without one of the points being directly in the tornado's path. I know, plot and suspense require them getting in front; and putting things directly into the tornado (Dorothy in the first movie/beginning of this movie) and chemistry/physics experiments of trying to affect the tornado requires getting in front of its path. But triangulating with advanced radar technology.... not at all. So that's the only real flaw that bothered me with the plot. As for the other stuff, I can deal with the suspension of disbelief that the movie requires us to make. It's much more about the special effects and the character growth anyway. But the characters at least need to be rational human beings with some logic in their thinking. The last time I checked, triangulation of radar and/or imaging technology does not require being directly in harm's way or bust.
