Yeah. if it helps anyone, this plant has a really thick stem and glossy leaves so it stores a lot of water. That means it can dry out a bit and be fine. I actually let mine dry out completely. from top to bottom almost like a succulent kind of dry and have it in a cactus mix with perlite and orchid bark and it's happy. I've seen from one or two other CZcamsrs as well and they've said that this plant is VERY prone to root rot so an extremely airy mix along with timing for letting it dry out works best
Cracked me up when I saw your boyfriends hand hold up the one cutting. That is my LIFE!!!! Yay for supportive partners !!!!
Hahaha! 😆 that was a job for two

@wildfern Just by looking at the soil mix you used I can tell that was the original cause of the problem. Aroids absolutely HATE potting mix! it becomes a sludge at the bottom of the pot that causes root rot no matter how much perlite you add in to amend it. Regular potting mix is very finely grained and when wet it clogs every space that is left between the roots, perlite, and pot. You should try making your own mix from scratch using 30% coco coir, 30% wood bark (orchid mix), 30% perlite and 10% earthworm castings. This is the magic soil mix for all aroids and I am about to make some, actually. Good luck!
Awesome thank you so much for sharing!! Definitely am going to look into that 🙌
@@wildfern Anytime! here is a great video by Kaylee Ellen on the aroid soil topic and her mix czcams.com/video/B9CGl_JiZB4/video.html
I’m gonna try this too. I wanna add coco coir and orchid bark to my regular
This plant is absolutely one of my favorite, i love it so much, have had it about a month now, and I constantly look at it and you can almost see it growing. You did a great Job by the way!
I found a medium sized one of these guys at my local greenhouse for literally only 15 freaking dollars. The poor thing was in such rough condition, the people must not have know what they were doing because they clipped it in so many places that won't regrow so there's stumps on two sides & the leaves were browning around them. BUT I put it up in my bathroom by the window & it's absolutely thriving. I love your videos & love this plant. I just ordered an monstera adinsonia & a philodendron birkin offline, they're actually my first ONLINE PLANT PURCHASES & I'm so excited. 💕
Omggggg what a find!! THat's amazing - they grow so fast too! Yay. And that's so exciting, plant mail is soooooo fun omg. enjoy!
Beautiful plant! I really needed this successful, relaxing propagation potting video today. Most enjoyable minutes of screen time I have had all day. Thank you so much for sharing.
Awe you’re so welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed ❤️
Coming home to the puppies reacting is everything 🥺 they was so happy when your hubby walked in
They love him so much ☺️🥺
When I first bought my rhaphidophora, it was massive with 4 main stems and lots of side branches. I attached them all over my wall. I then decided to repot it as the previous owner had it in a pot with no drainage holes and also the pot was too wide- I prefer smaller pots to reduce chances of rot. Well after I repotted, the whole plant went into shock, the roots rotted and I had to cut it. I had enough cuttings to fill 6 jars. When some of them rooted, I potted them and they rotted again! I potted the rest of the cuttings and they've been good so far but this has unexpectedly been the worst plant for me 😂😣
New subscriber- also I’m new plant addict too! I have about 16 plants now and 5 more coming in the mail- one of them being one of these. Thanks for all the info, I know it will come in handy when mine arrives!
Ahh so exciting!! I’m going to do an update on this guy soon too :)
I can’t thank you enough for this video!!! My RT is doing the same thing, it doesn’t look happy. I guess I should check the roots. Thanks Fern for your help!❤
You’re so welcome! Good luck :)
What a great recovery! Any tips on lighting and water I just got a rooted cutting
Was looking for a help video for m y mature, huge, beautiful, floor to ceiling growing tetrasperma. It was gorgeous and all of my plant mama friends were lovingly envious of my beauty that framed my newly remodeled bathroom. It started about 3 weeks ago with me accidentally and STUPIDLY cutting a completely healthy stem that was growing beautifully...when I meant to cut the stem that had lost alot of leaves and looked unhealthy. I almost passed out as soon as I saw what I had done. I propogated the whole vine and thankfully alot of my props are growing roots. I just pulled it outside and I think that root rot was the culprit for the unhealthy stem and whole plant. I hope and pray that I can save her! 😭
That cuttings are so nicee
You are a real life Poison Ivy👏
Just Subscribed!
Hahah thank you!!
Good job Fern
I *accidentally* bought 2 big tetrasperma cutiings from a charity auction and was wondering if I could just put them into the same pot to make it look bushier from the beginning. Now I'm quite confident that I can. Thank you for the chill video!
Ahh yes I definitely would! ☺️
Okay, so same here. I did repot it and looked at the root but there was no black parts, it looked okay. Still, the yellow and black dry leaves are STILL happening, so I cut a few big pieces of it today and put it in some water. I still hope I can save the mother plant and I'll try repotting it again and you know, washing the roots this time. It's really stressful since it looked really good once I got it. But, you know, it wasn't even in the right soil mix so I'm not even surprised tbh. Thank you for this video!
Same with mine! I repotted in good “airy” aroid potting mix when I first brought it home (it needed a re pot bad! I was careful to not disturb roots and placed in new soil and another nursery pot with good drainage. Every day a bottom leaf would STILL turn yellow. Did not over water, and always made sure to use a moisture meter. I was so confused and frustrated with this plant, and then found this video! I immediately turned this plant upside down and looked at roots more carefully! Long and behold…. I found the mesh from a seedling pod was splitting off the roots and strangling the main root ball. MORE than HALF of the roots fell off and I cut the plant up since there were barely no roots on this mother plant now. Water propagating the top vine cuttings and placed both propagations and mother plant in the plant “ICU” we will see I guess….
I just noticed you put a piece of fabric in pot... I used to do the same but repotted all my plants taking screens meshes out of bottom. It's what causes the root rot nothing can drain properly it gets mudded up! The try will help with little bit of soil comes out from bottom hole no worries
I’ll literally just “like” every video before I even watch it 😹❤️
bless you 💚
Plants are beautiful
Do you even but those dry stuff on leaf that's coming out just like pothos
Great job it's a success.
Thank you!
Your propagation roots look so dang healthy!! Do you have any tips? I feel like my roots always start to look brown and like they’re rotting when I’m propagating in water (but then again they aren’t squishy so I can’t tell if they are rotting or not😂)
I don’t do anything special, but I do try to change the water every few days and also rinse the roots and kind of rub them a little bit to get any bacteria off :)
I have the same issue with mine currently. Got it a month ago, it looked dry, watered it. it was okay for two weeks. Then it got brown spots and a lil droopy. So I repotted it. Today I noticed 2 yellow leaves. Checked the roots and almost all rotted. So removed the dead and currently have it in water to regrow the roots. 🤦🏼♀️
Ahhh yes, can be tricky. I find they are pretty specific with watering. Mine currently has a bunch of yellow leaves but I think it's actually under watering this time. Eeep.
Hey girl love your energy and wisdom. How did it go from water roots to soil?
They develop soil roots once you pot them up :)
@@wildfern Thank you so much for the reply! Mine struggled in the transition but I'll do more of your kind of potting mix!
Hi Fern :) I need your advice. I bought a couple RT cuttings and they have been propagating in sphagnum moss. I'm used to propagating my monstera adansonii in water. Do you think I can move them to water to continue propagating. I think one of the cuttings isn't doing very well.
Yes you can! It's easier to monitor them in water if you're worried too.
gah i got one a while back and the exact same thing happened, it just kept slowly declining. sadly i didn't act fast enough to save it.. perhaps one day i'll try again
Have you made an updated video for this plant? I'd love to see
I will!! Thanks x
Hi! Do you use a moisture meter when watering your RT? If so, what “number” do you usually water it at? ✨
I let that sucker get to a 1-2. They always trying to rot on me!
completely unrelated comment but you look like a lovechild of Emilia Clarke and Taylor swift! so pretty! back to your video, i am also currently saving my tetrasperma cutting, its leaves are completely wilted and scarred. wish me luck!
Good job, girl
Thank you 🥰
Oh also did you ever get a prince of orange? I also got mine at my local greenhouse for around 15, its already a large plant. BUT it's not doing so hot. It's not dying, but the new leaves won't develop completely, they're still soft. & The new growth just won't move. Maybe it needs more light? Thought maybe you could help a gal out. 🌿💚
Ooo I don't have a prince of orange, it's on my list though, they are beautiful! Hard to say :( Most of my philodendrons are pretty easy - I let them dry out completely and then give them a good soak & bright indirect light. Hope you get it sorted! x
@@wildfern I'm gonna definitely say it's the lightening then, I'm gonna try moving it closer to the window. thank you sweets, I live in PA & they're pretty easy to find here in the greenhouse. It's crazy how plants are more popular in certian area's!
I was so confused and frustrated with this plant, and then found this video! omg those mesh plugs are the worst!!! I hope your plant makes it 💚
Nope I have three little stuck… no leaf’s… rotted roots… but I’m trying to get some roots water propagating. Perhaps I’ll change to sphagnum moss in my prop bin (box) ahhhh I hate mess plugs.
I've watched this video a few times over the months I've had my raphidafora Tetrasperma. It grew like crazy for 3 months then the leaves suddenly started getting smaller. I had given it root rot! I've since cut it up and am propagating them. I'm wondering how yours has done since this video ten months ago ?
Oh my gosh! Since this video... mine actually rotted AGAIN. Right after I moved. I think it went too long without water so then when I watered it, it rotted. I was so bummed because it was growing into a beautiful lush plant! Anyways, I was able to save two decent cuttings from it and re-root them. I now have one potted back up in soil (in a clear orchid container so I can see the roots) and one is in Leca! So far so good.
@@wildfern Thanks for the update 💚. Sorry to hear it rotted again. I put my cuttings in moss (in clear pots with holes for LECA I think) with a bag over them. Checked them less than 2 weeks later & the ends were rotting. Cut off the rot, dipped the cut ends in cinnamon, put them back into sphagnum moss without the bag yesterday. The air roots have grown a bit and the growth points are white spots, so I'm cautiously optimistic. Wishing you the best of luck with yours.
Well done, they're lovely. Is the plant ok in medium to low light and can I grow in a pot?
I don’t get where to cut the stem for propagating. Can u make a video on that?
Yes!
I had this with my monstera variegata I got for 140 EUR but the root rot was so bad that it worked its way up in the stam of the plant. So I have 1 cutting left and it has roots but the stam is stil slowly rotting I think :(
Ahhhh so sad :(
Fern can you please tell me where you got that beautiful Alocasia Stingray its been on my wish list for 0ver a year if you please.
They pop up at big box stores where I live! I found it at Canadian Tire one day. I guess it depends on area!
Any update on this plant?
How long did you keep the cuttings in water for?
I believe about 2 months.
😍😍👍👍
Why are they so prone to root rot? Uhh, not sure what I’m doing wrong
Is there a specific type of water to use? When i do this my plants died. 😪😪 How often to change water? Thank you. My raphi is dying.. i want to save it 😪😪
I just use regular tap water! And you can change it every day to avoid bacteria if you're worried about root rot. Good luck!
My r. Tetrasperma is starting to brown at the tips do u think it’s root rot as well?
It could be. If multiple leaves are yellowing I would check the roots.
@@wildfern thank u
@@wildfern I looked at the roots and some looked black and slid off to expose a very thin hair like root that’s probably rot right ?
How is this plant doing??
Is there an update on how the cuttings are doing?
They’re doing fantastic! I have two beautiful plants out of them now and am actually propagating some, too. I can show how the plants are looking in a future vid. Thanks :)
This is EXACTLY what is happening to me right now...
Okay I need that blue bowl! Where is it from?
Haha I have no idea - sorry, it wasn't mine!
wildfern I found one! Just thought the pretty flower shape was perfect for plant soil mixing😁
Mine is growing like crazy but the new leaves don't split :( only the older leaves have splits in them.
Does it get bright indirect light?
@@LivewithKare it sits under a growlight.. I have added a trellis and now that it's climbing it has given me split leafs yay
Did you overwater it? What caused the root rot? Im thinking of buying this plant and Im too scared of root rot😭
I either overwatered it or it came that way! Because it was recently after I bought it.
Awwww. One more question, do you advise to repot the plant immediately if you bought it online? I repot mine right away. If it is from a nursery or local store, I give it two weeks before I repot it. Am I doing the right thing? By the way new subscriber here!❤️
Sorry Fern 😂😂 4:51 🤣🤭
This is definitely the plant you treat like a succulent 😅
Bahahaha
Yeah the poor thing. I miss it so much though, I need to get another Raphi 🥲🥺
An update??
I didnt know you had two dogs 🥰
Haha I just have one - Cadence is my ex's dog who I am still close with 😊
Beautiful plants i am looking for one ...if u sell let me know i am in ontario
That soil mix can only give you root rot.
oof I did so poorly in my plant physiology class I'm definitely not smart enough to take on this level of responsibility 😂
Hahah!
Rhaphidophora*
Halfway through your horrible root rot story i went to etsy and got a 40$ raphidophora tetresperma cutting 🤣😭💀 idk why my brain works this way
Hahaha omg honestly same
This post to be about planting not this foolishness
