Ambrosia fruit salad is also extra yummy when you add mini marshmallows and sour cream.

  • @dianeeharris
    @dianeeharris Před 4 lety +5

We make this, but we don't use the pineapple in its own juice,it's way too sour with the whipped cream! We use the *PINEAPPLE in HEAVY SYRUP* , drained, and we don't use the can of mixed fruit either (too mushy)... add 1 and a 1/2 cups of marshmallows to the whipped cream,so DeLiCiOuS,it breaks down with the whipped cream, and works wonderful, thickening it up a bit,and adds flavor too...and we add a 16 oz. (completely drained, and Pat dry with paper towels) whole maraschino cherries, you then cut each cherry in half.(pat dry again with paper towel)
*NO CINNAMON OR NUTMEG* and we use walnuts toasted in a dry pan over low heat and let them cool before putting them in the ambrosia salad. the nuts being toasted give it a DeLiCiOuS flavor... And if you use pecans toast them in a pan on top of your stove toasted nuts give things a more delicious flavor.
    ((Just my take on it))

My mom always made this with sour cream and mini marshmallows instead of whipped topping. The marshmallows give it a similar fluffy texture. Thanks for the cool nostalgic recipe, you've inspired me to surprise my family with this.

Shhh! 🤫 My Mom did, too! 🤣
Back in the day, she used Colombo yogurt (I'm old, lol!). It was probably the equivalent to our current Greek plain yogurt, which is what I would use. And a small, semi-ripe banana.
      Enjoy!

Always a favorite, the fruit salad. You are certainly correct about ensuring that the canned fruits are drained, very important. Same as draining as much liquid as possible from the salsa when making a seven layer dip! Great videos excellent channel!

I have heard the term ambrosia salad but never knew what it was! We grew up just calling this "fruit salad" and my mom is the Tia that always brings it to family gatherings and even now my family always asks is Tia bringing fruit salad?!! The kiddos love it too.
The only difference is my mom adds some dry jello mix - usually cherry or strawberry and sometimes she puts cottage cheese - not a lot but it gives it a sweet and savory vibe. :)

    If use fresh whipping cream:
    3/4 cups heavy cream (180ml)
    1/4 cup powdered sugar (35g)
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
When whipping cream, add sugar and vanilla when the cream is about 1/2 whipped, and it will whip to a thicker consistency. Adding the sugar at the beginning results in thinner consistency. The cream and the bowl should be as cold as possible. The cream will whip easier and to a thicker consistency when very cold.
    Tip: Stabilize your whipping cream
Non-stabilized whipped cream will start deflating after 1 hour but will keep for 2 to 3 days in the fridge (though it will weep). Stabilized cream can be kept in an airtight container or piping bag for 48 hours, and it will be fluffy like freshly made!
A stabilized whipped cream keeps its shape and is excellent for topping pies, cheesecakes, and more. Just adding a ½ teaspoon of cream of tarter per cup of heavy cream is all you need.
    OR
For every cup of heavy cream you whip, beat in 1 to 2 tablespoons of sour cream or creme fraiche. It won't make it tangy (or not in any truly notable way) but it does keep the whipped cream stable.
