"They can ignore history because it didn't impact them." Exactly this. But we also have a long and winding history of selective amnesia in this country, COVID being the latest round of that behavior. The people who weren't directly impacted by it could pretend like it was a political hoax or that what the virus does was being exaggerated, even after literally seeing refrigerated trucks for the bodies in NY. And in both instances, those who ignored it were damned with the truth of it and they lashed out because the rent finally came due on their safe space. And as a nation, we're finding out the hard way that safe spaces only come with a lease and never a title.

I actually had never seen that episode before, and only watched parts of that episode for the first time a few days ago. and Beau talking about this, made me immediately think of that.
With all due respect. I’ve seen that Golden Girls episode and that is still a Gross Whitewash of a conversation about the Confederate flag. It borderline is apologetic of the confederate flag and what it represents, as the female white character does not come to a realization of the true pain and struggle the flag represents. Moreover, the Don Cheatle character allows her to continue her bigotry past the encounter. Just saying. It’s not a good representation of how we can move forward talking about the confederate flag.
This reminds me of a company trip a few years ago in the “Deep South”. Many of my colleagues wanted to tour this beautiful historic Antebellum home. And couldn’t understand my (only POC in the group) disinterest. They Dismissed (and felt uncomfortable) with my concerns. Truly an eye opener...keep preaching Bro Beau.
It is also not The Confederate Flag. It is the flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, under Robert E. Lee. The Confederacy had several official flags. The first one was basically a white satin sheet to show the purity of the south. It did not go well in battle when the Union thought the Confederates were surrendering.

I think you nailed it Becky Murphy. That flag to many is nothing more than a gang symbol. Here is a group of knuckleheads that I can run with. They accept me. The others are all against us. No real deep thinking going on here.
@none none Yeah , while I was growing up in the 80's (8 to 16) in Tx, that was what my friends thought of it too. It was just the rebel flag. A flag to fly to show you weren't establishment. The thing is as I got older I actually paid attention in class and I also read other books outside of class and I saw what the flag actually stood for. I guess my whole point is that thinking it was cool when I was ignorant is one thing, but once you learn what it truly is, it ain't cool no more. Stop trying to pretend it is, to those that still do. When I did say something about it to people, some agreed with me and then some would give me the apologist history. Why would you call a domestic league, with possibly some Canadian teams,a world series? People are focused on their own history. I'm surprised that people call Nelson the best admiral without even being adware of Tromp and DeRuyter... It is because ultimately the Dutch lost to the English and they wrote history from their perspective. Euclid is honoured because we dumb medieval Europeans had forgotten most knowledge and rediscovered it through ancient Greek texts. And some Arabic texts, but in the times of the crusades that was also a bit sensitive. In the end I don't think people don't really care about who discovered what, unless they can claim some personal pride in that. And it won't change their thinking about other groups. So I like your posts in the sense that it may give pride to kids of minorities who morally hear a eurocentric telling of history. Trump was right with his statement. Neo-Nazis in Germany use the Confederate flag to substitute for the Swastika which is banned there. These "very fine people" probably aren't thinking a whole lot about America's history of slavery as much as just fascism and white supremacy in general. So, uh... yeah. Cool.
We used to do an exercise in the classroom for middle school children where everyone started on the same line. You took a step back if you were black, a step forward if you were white, it also included where you lived, your parents education, gender, etc. That was an eye opening exercise for all of us to see exactly where people started their life journey from. White boys were often many steps ahead and black girls were in the back. You could see the realization on their faces of how many and who had life stacked against them from the get go.
Great explanation to a simple concept millions of white Americans find difficult to understand. In fact, that is what the GOP has turned into. The party of white grievance. Thank you sir!
@John Smith Tony Blackwell is talking about etymology, the study of the origin of words, and he is correct. If you only read the definition, you miss a lot of the information made available to you. I expect that you often do so. Middle English: via Old French from Latin privilegium ‘bill or law affecting an individual’, from privus ‘private’ + lex, leg- ‘law’.
I lived in S Carolina for a few years. Every day there was an editorial in the paper containing a reference to the war between the states. This idea that the South was a utopia, a second Athens, was frequently floated, but it is of course a myth. There were a few very wealthy people who had an indulgent lifestyle, but there was no outpouring of human achievement to go with it. Maudlin nostalgia for a lie is hardly a recipe for progress.
This is something I can't find anywhere else. The fact that these words were motivated by something said by Trump, lets me know that we might have to flip over a few turds before we find our flower.
I was clueless about the Confederate flag for most of my life. To me it was just another pretty flag. I see very differently now. Now I see it as a warning to avoid the people who have one because they are the dangerous kind of stupid. Thank you for this video. I really enjoyed it.

Many are also caught up in the mythology of their own ancestors as well as the time, great great grand pappy or whoever they've been raised hearing stories about. They see a very narrow band of history, often with things said like "our family were some of the 'good' ones" to help erase a sense of shame. I know, that was the reframed history I was raised on and essentially brain washed by till embarrassingly far into my adulthood.

Sir, you just did me a WOW moment when you spoke on this. It really made me think more about the Flag and how others that are not my skin tone look at it. And a tear came to my eye how you just broke it down plain and simple here.
Serena, interesting theory. Can you share more on what you are thinking here? I never thought of white supremacy as being exclusive to impoverished whites. I just read about Tucker Carlson’s writer and some of his positions {which I would bet Carlson shares) and they are both upper class when it comes to financial position.
As long as poor white folks can be convinced that they have more in common with their white bosses and landlords than with their black fellow-workers, and that they have something to gain by maintaining white supremacy, it will be impossible for the workers to build and act in solidarity against the bosses and landlords. Divide and rule.

I hope this encourages an epiphany for those that don’t understand. Really well done! I loved Dukes of Hazard growing up and that’s what I thought of when I saw the rebel flag.
Growing up in Northern California in an earlier era, my primary view of the Confederate battle flag was as the roof of the car in The Dukes of Hazzard. In retrospect, I suppose that was a major whitewash of the whole issue.

It was like was like I had absorbed it through the air. A six year old shouldn't know that.

Maybe my partner will understand this a little better now. I'm going to play it for him when I get home.
Thank you, Beau. You may have just stopped an argument between us.
Tangent question for you Beau: I'm old, but even now I find it hard to listen to a politician for very long. How do you manage to listen to Donald Trump long enough to extract any thing meaningful from his rambling, lying, disjointed 'speeches'?

Reminds me of the Don Cheadle Golden Girls episode on the south and that flag...
I was trying to remember what show talked about this! Thanks for having a better tv knowledge than me.
For me it was a bright orange Charger flying though the air. I’ve learned different now.
I just shared that scene on FB, but it also showed her seeing her privilege in the end and apologizing 😉
I watched that whole thing live on npr , it was like watching a trainwreck.

The Confederate flag that they love so much did not exist in the Pre-War south.

I still to this day can't wrap my head around the bs people will say to keep flying that relic of history and disgrace.

The very word "privilege" literally means "private law"
@John Smith Tony Blackwell is talking about etymology, the study of the origin of words, and he is correct. If you only read the definition, you miss a lot of the information made available to you. I expect that you often do so.
Middle English: via Old French from Latin privilegium ‘bill or law affecting an individual’, from privus ‘private’ + lex, leg- ‘law’.
@John Smith possessing a right or immunity does imply legality in some defined jurisdiction.

Sir...you're very deep with "just a thought." Love your channel btw.
