- I made a folding guitar stand out of walnut and brass! Thanks to

In my old office, I had my guitars hanging on the wall. In the new house, I didn't want to lose that wall space so I wanted to make a guitar stand that was functional and portable.
I started designing the stand in Illustrator so that I could get an idea of how big each piece needed to be. The sizing and geometry is important because I wanted the stand to hit hard stops when it was unfolded without having to add any additional fasteners.
Unlike most of my woodworking projects, I used the Illustrator template to make a prototype out of some scrap plywood. I was very happy that I did, because my geometry was all wrong and I would have wasted some expensive hardwood. After a few iterations I had a working model and transferred the new design to some pieces of walnut. I used brass hardware to contrast the dark wood and even had to make a custom latch out of a brass sheet.
I used The Wood Whisperer Thread Taps to tap holes directly into the rotating legs so that I didn't need to use a nut on the outside. This choice helped keep a minimalistic look to the whole project and lets the beautiful walnut take center stage. I CA glued thin strips of EVA foam to the surfaces that would touch the guitar to prevent scratching and I finished the whole thing with two coats of Danish oil.
This stand is sturdy and elegant enough to show off my favorite vintage guitars and will add a custom touch to my new music room!
If you enjoyed this woodworking project, you'd love my others too.

I had to make some changes to the original video and re-upload. Sponsor stuff... Sorry about that :/
I learned from previous comments that the foam I used MAY interact badly with nitro finishes on nicer guitars. Leather would be a safer option for padding.
Also, extending the "feet" back behind the guitar will make it more stable , although mine is fine for me personal use.
I Like To Make Stuff 4th like first comment
hi bob
Love it
I Like To Make Stuff why does it say 2 days ago on your comment
I Like To Make Stuff no prob Bob 😊 I'd probably rewatch this 4 times anyways
More guitar stuff please
I watched this again because you know... support and all that... You're almost to 1.5 mil subs!
I really appreciate that man!
*Bob* starts off video explaining everything he did wrong and just makes a new one
*Me* cuts wood wrong and ends up with my table saw catching on fire
Lol
Ryan Downie My life in a nutshell
Sounds like an awesome video. Got a link?
our work table saw actually caught fire once.
hey, at least you have a table saw :V
Joel da Silva Vicente Filho I don't understand why people say that. Like I've never complained that I don't have a tool. There's always someone who has that tool that you can become friends with and learn how to use. Or you could just save up enough money to but that tool. I started off with nothing. Got a job at a lumber yard. Spent everything I made there on tools. Ended up with a cast iron table saw, a lathe, bandsaw and huge sander. So maybe people have actually put in the time and the effort to get to where they are. Just a thought
Rewatched. No idea what you changed. :)
What a great project!!! Thanks! I LOVE Walnut.
"Im not worried about it falling at all"
Puts his hand behind out of fear of it falling, but really nice build i might try it
I love watching everything you produce and I don't even make any of them. Your passion and perseverance is outstanding! Your family must be so lucky
COOL! I wanted to make one as Christmas gift this year. Perfect!
Try putting blue tape on the wood and gluing the templates to the tape. It would make taking the templates off a bit easier.
Watched again..... YOUR VIDS ARE THAT GOOD i can watch em multiple times NP
How did I miss this Gem! I have been following for at least a year!
I really like the look of this Bob, I'm really surprised with the fact the guitar didn't tip over. just because It looks so short. You've inspired me to stop surfing youtube and to get back to making something!
I Love this channel. such energy! I have Been a subscriber for a while now, I've watched almost every video. Yesterday i even watched some of them from your website
That looks awesome! I'm gonna try this!
Great vid, Bob!
I love your videos, keep up the great work Bob!
Thanks Nic!
Great job Bob. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Cameron!
Nice one. Really very simple and easy to make. It's really given me a good idea to make it myself. Tnx
Wow, that new shop is huge
Very nice.
Even though I watched this before, I still watched it again. Love your videos man, keep up the amazing work
Thanks Adam! I really appreciate that!
I think it is perfect!
It looks classy! Nice build and prototyping.
Thanks Dan!
I like it. I might try making that myself.
Great job Bob!
Thanks Tim!
You should make a headphone stand.
Toshi Harris definitely
I missed the entire project cause I was laughing hysterically at RGLRPRPR tm hahahaha that is gold
:)
"I am not worried about this thing falling backward"
*Puts hand behind guitar*
almost falls backwards.
Seriously though, love your work Bob
I like this a lot
It's awesome
What do you mean “the stand is not perfect?” It’s perfect!
Still a great video, could rewatch all your videos all day
Thanks so much!
nice I will do it for my woodworking class.
Nice Mustang.
That was a cool project video! : )
I thought it was a new video I was so excited
Cooooool! More music-oid projects, please! :D
NICE!
Nice one !
Bobification bell 🔥🔥
Ha! :) Love it
A bell that bobs, not rings.
Bob starts off video explaining everything he did wrong and just makes a new one
don't know if are aware of this but CA glue can have a thermal reaction with some foam rubber material . Friendly FYI.
Perfect for handpan
Cool
Nice
I don't have a guitar, but I do love stuff that folds up! I like the design, simple and classic. If you plan to make more, I have a suggestion on the back lock: You can cut a strip down the middle as a channel for the screw, then offset it lower on one side so it will slide into place and also slide closed. This makes it automatic and a little more stylish, don't you think?
Just watched this, even though I don't entirely know what changed.
But- it was just as cool as before, and my little view helps build support.
Wait, your sponsor is gone!
The scooter was pretty cool, but not if they were upset enough to make you reupload and drop their video!
It will be added to a future video with some new footage. We had a miscommunication but it's all good.
Rewatching cause Bob deserves it! Also, where can I get some of that rglrprntrppr? XD
Beautiful mustang at the beginning lol
Re-upload or not, your content is still new and refreshing!
:) Thanks! I appreciate that !
Brilliant! I love the portability of your design. I think I will have a go at making some.
I haven't been a subscriber for very long, so apologies if you already built one, but how about a collapsible music stand? Thanks 🙂
Could also make for an iPad stand, or cookbook stand... I like it!
I love it, you should sell them on your page I'd love to get my hands on one
I would love to see you build a guitar, maybe one from a kit and one from scratch.
Habia mirado a huevo el proyecto, pero quedo bastante bueno...🖖😎👍
I like this idea. I may use it, but I would like to make it a double stand for two guitars that could be separated.
Is the template available for public use? I would like to make this for someone and would love to use the template you made.
A great trick (from sdgood's scrollsaw channel) when using templates is to cover the board with blue masking tape, then spray the tape with adhesive and stick your template to the blue tape. Easy to remove the template after cutting, every time.
Great idea!
I think it's very helpful for the people who have the necessary instruments like the machines u have but try to upload some craft work without using ur machines so that those who don't have the machines can also craft out something good.
more guitar stuff
hey i like all of your videos. please make a acoustic guitar too. you already make a guitar case and stand. now time for the guitar.
Great build, but it looks like it will topple easily once the guitar is in place.
I think this is a really nice build but also it's one where looks comes before practicality. Usually in your videos it's the other way around. As you said, the brass hinge is something that could be improved as it's the crucial piece keeping it all together. The stand looks awesome but also like it's about to collapse under the weight of a guitar so it leaves a feeling of disappointment because a lot of effort went into it.
Very nice. Mine's welded steel. Yours looks a lot nicer, but I play live a lot and I don't think it would hold up to the amount of punishment I'd give it. Still, I might make one for home.
Will a dreadnought acoustic fit on that stand? Love the walnut and brass.
Love this project! Are the plans available anywhere?
Still watched anyways because I like to watch stuff
How do you know what finish to use for different types of wood or different projects?
Ahh!! i was gonna say!!.youtube's got some serious bugs..lol
"Take it easy bob!"🍻🥞
I have two Guitars but never learned to play however i would like to make a stand like this or maybe a wall mount for the Guitar.
👍👊
Nice design. I think it could be improved upon aesthetically though (better contours and tighter fitting connections where the stand folds); though taste is subjective. Thanks for sharing.
I wana see your guitar collection
What's the background music? It's super sick.
Can you share your template for use to print and use too ? I really like it and I would appreciate it a lot
Deja vu
I’m glad I watched this for the second time. The reveal when you put the guitar on the stand was awesome. The music was perfect. Great job.
Thanks so much and thanks for watching twice :)
You should make a hanging guitar hook...
Bob, I want to make a Mancala set but I don't know how. Can you make a video on making a Mancala set for me?
Okay so while watching your build It came to me how about using leather for the hing? it is cheap and can be replaced the same.
Great vid but why was it re uploaded?
still watched it again...just realized it can also hold a large plate too 😄
Thanks for rewatching!
If you were to add a u Shape it would enshore the guitar would stay weren’t supposed to and not fall over .
Make an infinity mirror table
Oh lord, blue tape? Just wait 'til you try and finish it. They make double-sided woodworking tape just for situations like yours, use that!-)
How about making contrasting wooden bolts?
any ideas how to make one for v shaped guitar ?
I'm sure we'll hear about why he reuploaded it on the podcast. I can't handle not knowing!!!
Marco B
What podcast?
UrbanDanger ! Look up the "Making It" Podcast, it's on iTunes and Google play I believe. It's him, Dave from Make Something and Jimmy DiResta. I thought this was common knowledge by know, so I'm glad to introduce someone new to it!
What are your favourite bar clamps
RGLRPRNTRPPR, now in the ILTMS shop!
Can you make a guitar Wall hanger ,too?
Like
“Im not worried aboit tjus thing falling over “ puts hand behind it to catch is to it doesnt fall
Can you do a build where you don't use any power tools
"Hey i'm Bob and i Like to reupload stuff"
Can you make one for a keyboard?
At the end of each video that you do I realised that you do a sort of conclusion paragraph, I was wondering if you did product design or woodworking at school?
+Gollyy 🙂 I went to art school. We had to do lots of critique and summarization.
I was like he already made this video lol
me puedes facilitar plantillas para hacerla
