  • How would you improve on the perfect-sounding cartridge? Well, you wouldn’t.
When audio artist Devon Turnbull (aka OJAS) collaborated with Denon to create a special edition of that cartridge, he took a different approach. Rather than tinkering with its sound, he styled the limited-edition DL-103o with a clear body, inviting audiophiles to admire the fine craftmanship within. We like to think of it as the window to the soul of your hi-fi system.

Any worthy improvements to the Denon 103 besides adding a clear body?

No changes to the engineering. Devon really wanted to celebrate the cartridge exactly as it was made back in the 60's.

There are lots of other aftermaket modded DL-103s on the market, espcially those with aluminium bodies like Zu Audio.
It still has a conical stylus, maybe some have been replaced with a more modern stylus shape,

I applaud the honesty of saying this is just a styling exercise. I greatly appreciate the denon company , but just the tip shape alone is now obsolete, and is incapable of the detail recovered by a more modern shape. this is a nice cart for it's intended purpose in 1962 , and the job hasn't changed , it's still a nice cart, but other carts will deliver more information.

chasing detail is not a panacea

Something feels missing when I go back to a basic diamond profile. Going to have to pass on this one.

The Ortofon SPU #1s also has that basic "obsolete" spherical profile, and it will blow many, many carts out of the water. Sound quality is additive, so if you are using high quality components and speakers that have the right synergy, it will likely sound amazing. Remember, also, that "detail" isn't the end-all-be-all. There's power and slam and presence and so much more. I'd rather listen to an OG mono Blue Note with a cartridge that has a spherical tip than most moving magnet cartridges with exotic profiles, hands down. There's just something there: I find it's the difference between a great-sounding, but polite matinee Jazz gig, and a burning, sweaty, nearly dangerous, front-row-shouting, late night jam session. I choose the dangerous one...
I've been to Devon's Ojas listening space a few times, now. I like what he's doing, despite all the "old-man-yelling-at-clouds" responses he gets (I'm old so I can say that!) He's bringing young, interested people into this hobby/obsession and I, for one, and very very happy about it. Will I buy this cartridge? Probably not, but I've already sent this video to someone just starting out with the knowledge that the smarts that Devon brings will interest this person and he may just go the MC-cart-with-step-up-transformer route. I also applaud Denon for, firstly, keeping the DL 103 line going (!) and secondly, for doing these kinds of mashups that may reach more people...
