We live in a challenging age. With the death of George Floyd, the subsequent marches across the world against racism, the struggles of the #Metoo movement, campaigns for equal rights for the LGBTQ community, and the rise of Disability theorists. Yet, all these efforts towards equality in the face of varying types of oppression speak loudly of the voices of the others and their need to be heard and acknowledged. Within psychotherapy and psychology though, difference and diversity trainings have been slow in turning their considerable talents towards exploring or understanding the experiences of the other, often doing no more than to mirror the wider societal oppressions we all witness daily.
This morning session is designed to give facilitators, supervisors, lecturers, and markers an insight into the latest thinking around privilege and otherness within the profession. Drawing upon the idea of intersectionality, this taster presents a more nuanced, psychotherapeutic understanding of difference and diversity.

The major problem here is that therapy is CLIENT FOCUSED, not other focused or intersectionality focused. A client based approach as a primary method will solve it all for the client. Therapy is not for social justice.

For me, the concepts were too watery and laden with baggage to get a hold of, I think it's fine for an rhetorical piece but fails in terms of scientific or philisophical integrity, so I couldn't last more than 20 mins, it would be interesting to see intersectionality approached with a critical eye for it undoubtedly has some utility...

It seems as though the speaker suffers from living in a Progressive echo chamber. The first thing I’d suggest to him is look up Candace Owens-one of the most prominent leaders of a social and political movement that is diametrically opposed to intersectionality. She also just so happens to be a black woman. How does a black woman become a leader for conservatives across the country? Because she is first and foremost an American. Race is incidental to ones identity-not essential. The speaker says that identity is ‘fluid’ yet he believes that race, gender and sexuality determine one’s privilege and responsibility to help others. If we share membership with a community than we have an obligation to help each other wherever we can. This obligation has nothing to do with how much privilege we have or what race we are. He seems like a nice man but his ideology is fundamentally racist.

Wow or maybe Candice Owens is a conservative leader because conservatives love to point to one Black person as representation for all and elevate those that support their problematic views. Maybe just maybe (meaning obviously to me), she is a leader, not because she is an "American" first but because she is a Black woman. Honestly, if you one could live with themselves, being a Black person figure head for conservatives is a great business plan.

@@CarmenJenkins816 a better business plan would be to go along with intersectional talking points. There are more opportunities afforded to those who repeat and amplify this harmful ideology.
