When are you going to tell the secret of acquiring a new language? Sorry but after 13 years three methods including LingQ and total failure in Tagalog.
Learning a second or more language should be the same as learning our first language. We listen and then we try to communicate, perfect or not. As we practice and are corrected we get better. The same is with learning to play music. We don't have to learn all the technicalities of reading and playing music. We start by making a sound. As we play and practice more, our sound improves over time. Excellent tips!

I really appreciate your style of teaching and encouraging people to just quit procrastinating and start speaking as soon as possible. I am a big proponent of vocabulary over grammar in my journey to learn Russian. There is just so much there concerning grammar, that I think I would just give up if I felt I had to be perfect all the time. Keep doing what you do.

All of the general advice in this video can be applied to learning music too. Music is not technically a language, but learning it is very similar to language learning.
With music its like "one mans trash is another mans treasure"
I quite agree that perfectionism does not go well with language learning. Despite this, especially in my country, students are not expected to make any minute mistakes in exams, regarding grammar, spellings and translation; and in such educational process, teachers unconsciously indoctrinate students with the norm of perfectionism, forcing them to believe that making mistakes is an embarrassing thing in any case that should be avoided, and that they would soon be scolded if they do so.
(It’s a pity that there’re actually still a lot of teachers in Japan who often give students unreasonable scoldings.)
I would clearly have to say that social norms and educational environments should be changed and revised so that language learning will become a more flexible and enjoyable one.
Thank you for this video. I'm a native English speaker learning Italian my first foreign language and I struggle with ocd. Especially on pronunciation. I will literally listen to how a word is pronounced on a translator 30 plus times and get so frustrated. This eases some of that stress.
Forget and re-learn, that's a great summary of how a language is built in our brains. Thanks for this video.

Absolutely agree with the title of this video. I work in English - which is a foreign language to me - and even though my vocabulary and understanding is far better than that of my colleagues, they are still more fluent than me. I never seem to find the right words to use in spoken English and I always make basic grammar mistakes that I would never do in writing.

Thanks, Steve! This has been a constant struggle in language learning to reconcile these two. When getting frustrated, it helps to calm myself, breathe, and just keep going. In casual settings, conveyance of information is more important than absolute perfection.

Yes… it is easy to give up (temporarily at least) when learning / making mistakes. That is why it is So Much Easier to live in another country (totally immerse) to progress !

J'aurais simplement une petite remarque : contrairement à vous, je pense que la prononciation est un aspect qu'il faut absolument s'efforcer de maîtriser quand on commence une langue.
Si on ne fait pas ce travail-là, on prend de mauvaises habitudes dont il devient difficile de se débarrasser par la suite, surtout quand on veut se faire comprendre à l'oral.
Par exemple, si j'essaie de parler avec un Français natif, et que ma prononciation est mauvaise, il va spontanément avoir envie de passer à l'anglais. Résultat : je vais moins vite progresser que si j'avais travaillé la prononciation dès le départ.

Pronunciation is the most important I think and what you should start with. Instead of the other way around.

what I've always believed in is that the only thing u have to be perfect at in language learning is pronunciation cause the process of perfecting it gives u some much exposure to a language and a such a profound feeling of connection, it's just unbelievable

Great video! For me, good pronunciation and sounding like a native are two different things.
The one counterpoint to "being understood is good enough" is that there are parts of some kinds of accents that are genuinely grating to listen to. Not all accents, but there are some kinds of mistakes (which likely depend on the language in question) that just leave the native listener uncomfortable. On the other hand, some accents are just that - clearly foreign, but there's nothing particularily unpleasant about them for a native listener.
I would value ironing out grating aspects of one's accent, but the non-bothersome aspects don't seem terribly important to me in comparison to fluency in word choice, sentence structure, speed of processing the language etc.
I define fluncy to be the point where you start thinking on your target language.

I have a suggestion, although it may seem impractical. Only you possess the ability and resources to undertake this endeavor after studying all languages: to create a completely new language that combines the best features from each language, considering various perspectives such as:
The accuracy of delivering meaning in the language.
The diversity of pronunciation in the language.
The pleasantness of the language, resembling singing.
The ability of the language to express a wide range of emotions.
The minimalistic nature of the language's dictionary.
The ease of learning the language.
I somehow think that it can save the world and you are the hero and deserve the great honor written in Wiki, textbook!
Hello,Steve! Be so kind and share please your thoughts ans experience as for reding more, learning your target language. Would you recommend to read more out loud or silently? And do you translate each sentence into your native tongue or just read,diving completely into a target language without using your native tongue?

It is my dream to go to, and maybe Live in Brazil.. maybe even raise my future kids there.. is there a job I can look into that will pay me to learn Portuguese and live in Brazil for a short period? Until then, I decided today that I'll spend at least 4, hours a day reading and listening because after 2 years My comprehension skills are very Lacking. Well all my skills.. never spoke before in Portuguese and never got to talk on the phone.. Well I did once.. but I knew nothing in terms of comprehension and I just froze up cause I was nervous and so we ended the call. So I'm hoping multiple hours a day will help me with my comprehension and reading cause I remember the 1 week I was studying 5-10 hours a day I learned A LOT more than ever.

Children spend almost two years of their lives just listening before they start speaking.

You said that right because even though he can speak several languages his pronunciation is not good. Pronunciation was the first thing that i was working on. I guess i approached language from this point because I am a musician and sounding like what i hear is very important to me. I do not want to sound like American trying to sound like what ever language i am speaking.
In which language do I have poor pronunciation in your opinion? Most people are influenced by their native language when they speak another language. I don't consider that poor pronunciation.
Take French for example. You talk in French like you talk in English. It's recognizable it is you. Luca Lamporiello is like this as well. He sounds like Luca in the languages he speaks. Contrast this with Language Simp when he tries to speak French well. He throws himself into character and sounds like a different person. By the way, I've learned a lot from your videos.
It not terrible but when I heard Nate the guy who does a Spanish channel his sounded like a Mexican not a American speaking Mexican Spanish. But by your comments i understand that you are not focusing on sounding just like a native. just focused on understanding and speaking the language.

I will never sound like a native speaker of Colombian Spanish. Neither will a native speaker of Puerto Rican Spanish.
languages are tools to be used,not arts to be mastered.
You could still communicate with a B1 level , that doesn’t mean you should stop there ,
