  • The Ortlieb Ultimate 6 Plus Handlebar Bag is without a doubt on of the best handlebar bags on the market. In my review I go through some of the features and tell you why the smaller version is a good fit for most people. I’ve used this handlebar bag for at least 5 years of bike touring adventures and only have good things to say about it.

    My camera sensor (Sony a7 m2) loosened and finally dislocated due to the vibration in the bag. Keep it in mind when you carry dslr cameras with sensor stabilization feature.

      Well hello there! So nice to hear from you Doug. Everything is fine with the family. I myself amon an amazing tour called the Wilderness Road here in Sweden. I'm currently camped out in a wooden shelter, one like the ones you saw when you were here, waiting out the rain.
      I guess it must feel great that the NHL is back again? It's great for us Europeans since some of the games are at really TV-friendly times for us.

    I just purchased the 5L version to replace my Arkel handlebar bag. (small size) It's worth noting, the Ortleib bag weighs 450g (1lb.) less than the Arkel as well as being easier to access while in motion. I'm not a weight weenie but cutting weight up high on the handlebars is noticeable. Thanks for the informative review. I'd love to tour in Sweden one day!

    I bought one following your review, it's proved to be brilliant. I prefer the slightly larger size rather than trying to cram stuff in. It might be a bit of a sail when you're into a head wind but I'll put up with that. I was impressed how secure the fitting to the bike was. It's great to be able to remove it quickly and to lock it. I have no concerns about it keeping the weather off valuable stuff. Thanks.

    • @BikeTouringMike
      @BikeTouringMike  Před 2 lety

      So glad to hear that, Oleksii! Well, it kind of depends on how the bike light is designed and where you place it, I guess. The few times I've used a light I've placed it on one of the dropouts and that way it has worked out perfectly.

    • @BikeTouringMike
      @BikeTouringMike  Před 4 lety +2

      The handlebar is mounted so that it sticks out in front of the handlebar, so it takes up very little handlebar real estate. You only need a coule of centimters in the middle of the handlebar to be able to mount it.

    Hi Mike, TNX for the video. Could you also put it backwards over the top tube? Because I have an Alee Denham like handlebar with two front handgrips facing foreward.

    • @BikeTouringMike
      @BikeTouringMike  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Vincent! I guess you could. At least if the handlebar is somewhat straight and you have enough clearance toward the top tube. I'm not super familiar with that handlebar model, but what I can see from the pictures there seems to be a 40 cm gap between the two handgrips. And the bag is only 24 cm in width. So you should be able to fit it. And Alee himself seems to have his handlebar facing front, but it seems that he might be using some sort of other extend mount. Might be worth asking him, I'm sure he'll help you.

      Bike Touring Mike Haha, I didn’t know there was such a thing either, I was just being daft. I should think it’s strong pepper spray. I would take the mosquito spray rather than bear spray any day.

    • @pbennett1852
      @pbennett1852 Před 4 lety +1

      That bag would be good for that. I took my bear spray with me on my ride and run the dog ride this week. We go up into the mountains for this. We've encountered moose in the area and my little dog flushed a moose out of the brush one time. The moose did not seem happy about it but didn't chase us. So, I thought I'd take along the bear spray just in case. Finding a place to carry it where it would be easily grabbed was a problem. I ended up hanging it badly off the handle bars. I am not too familiar with it, but was glad to see it has a "safety" on it that must be let off before it will spray. We saw no moose on the ride this week.
      I have not seen a bear while riding, but a squirrel attacked my dog a couple years ago in the same part of the woods. Needless to say, the squirrel lost the battle. That's the only wildlife "attack" I've witnessed.

    Hey Mike and fellow bikers, has anyone here taken a spill on a bike with this bag installed? Ortlieb switched from snaps to magnets several years ago, and that sounds super convenient, but I'm interested to know what kind of abuse it can take and still not have the contents spill everywhere. Seems to me that, of all the bags we put on our bikes, we tend to put our most expensive stuff in our bar bags, so if you all have any opinions for me before buying one of these, I'm happy to hear it. Thanks!

      I have no problems fitting a front light on either my handlebar or the head tube. Sounds like a handlebar bag might not be the way to go for you. For the rest of us (most bike tourers) it's a really practical bag that means that you have easy access to things on your bike tour. Such as your phone, snacks, camera, wallet. Having to get off the bike to access those thing if you were to store them in your panniers or your bikepacking bags can be a real hassle in the long run.
