      @@alzate_dev he wished it had as much as 60s! Most classic premo beats were made on an sp1200 with max 10 seconds at full sample rate.. and max of 2.5 seconds per pad...even the mpc60 only had a max of 26seconds...we used to speed records up on the decks then slow them down in the sampler to increase sample time...but that made the samples dirtier all early producers were forced to chop samples into smaller chunks...whether they wanted to or not...necessity is mother of invention as they say :) the chopped up samples and dirty gritty audio quality is part of the beauty of "golden era" hip hop

Scratching different type of (mostly) hiphop songs for the chorus, including songs from the same artist, is one of the fundemental parts of boom bap. It's way easier nowadays though when you can scratch mp3's (or other files) with Serato, Traktor or other software but back then you had to have the real press. If you didnt have the acapella you filtered the song to your liking. Scratching is another artform in itself though.

      It's one of the lost elements of hip-hop and I'll tell you why. It requires actual practice and skills, something this new generation severely lacks because they're lazy. They just jump on a mic and mumble some nonsense to a weak drumkit a baby could make with his rattle and these record companies label it hip-hop then this lazy generation just gobbles it up because that's what they've been programmed to like. You can't just jump on the wheels of steel and become a master the way you can just throw something down on your computer by accident and make a trap beat. You gotta have Skillz...

    I've listened to how producers have flipped hundreds(if not thousands) of samples and theres only three that I can't wrap my head around...this one(I have no idea how Premo heard the potential of a beat from this), second is Busta's Everything Remains Raw(Easy-Mo Bee said that beat was created from a ONE note sample, and he can't even explain how he thought to flip it like that), and third is my vote for the best sample flip of ALL-TIME, and that would be the Herbie Hancock sample for Shook Ones Pt. II(How Havoc thought to use that particular few seconds of piano and lower the pitch of the first few notes then slightly increase the pitch of the remaining notes to get that classic riff is a feat of sampling I almost can't comprehend. All I can say is Havoc is either a genius or he was just messing around pitching random records and stumbled across it by sheer luck. Either way, he has a great ear for catching it

      If you slice the sample to time you can load it in the MPC with each slice assigned to a pad, then you can play the sample like a keyboard. It's not like he heard the sample and thought "I'm gonna slice it this way so that I can have these notes", it's more like he heard the sample and liked the instrument so decided to slice it and then jam out some ideas that sounded good.

    • @Ayo.Ajisafe
      @Ayo.Ajisafe Pƙed 3 lety +19

      @@Guerilla_G I absolutely agree with you to a large extent. Sampling is difficult but when you reverse engineer some of these and get into the process Most of the mysticism expressed by people that might not have tried it disappears. This one is not mystical at all for me.
      It's like you said... isolate the part you want...Slice it up. The pitch shifting might be done afterwards. Beats by JBlack can be seen doing this literally in real time on the Mpc 2500. However i will say that some of these producers Havoc included and J Dilla, Primo etc do most definitely hear the arrangement before chopping. This I've read in interviews of people that worked with Dilla. He already Knew (at least sometimes) How he wanted the beat to sound before chopping it.
      I think in the sampling community online and on CZcams this is an aspect of the art that is not spoken about at all.
      It's like on the guitar there are people that know how they want the notes they play to sound before playing then and others lead with the fingers.

    Wrong on the main sample - Premier himself said he only chopped into three pieces. There aren't such small chops, and in this version, you can even hear that it's much 'choppier,' literally, than in the song.

    The source is well known. I think big producers are not allowed to take this Kind of sample anymore because of copyright.

    Damn this is done so clever. Sampling your own song. No better way to explain what nas is like than to show it by using his own song.
