    In my experience, greek life is basically extended High School for people who like that kind of life. It really is just cliquey and a big popularity contest. I found the maturity level to be quite low, as most people were more concerned about their "image" than anything else.

      You should have joined a professional fraternity if you want be with mature students. However thats why its important to know how people in the fraternity are like before you join. I'm in a social frat but a good majority of them are committed to their school work.

      My school had a huge greek herd. But, the school was so big that they kind of "exclusivated" themselves into oblivion. I noticed them some during the beginning of my freshman year. But, except for two or three isolated occasions, I never noticed them after that (even though they were embarrassingly obnoxious and drew unbecoming attention to themselves at every conceivable opportunity.) I never could imagine myself living a life with that little dignity.

      WanderingOldSoul I totally agree, it confuses me because I’m sure if you asked most of these girls why they think they’re “the best” they wouldn’t have a real answer that truly has anything to do with themselves. It feels like these young women are repeating terms like “values” and “best version of myself” but many of the things they do is to receive validation from others within their social groups.. Sorority life doesn’t seem like the best fit for young people who are truly trying to grow up and be independent and learn more about themselves as people, the concept just seems quite damaging. I feel very sad that sororities misrepresent themselves and let these young adults fall into their traps.

    • @wanderingoldsoul420
      @wanderingoldsoul420 Před 6 lety +17

      I've always felt this way about sororities. They take advantage of young, vulnerable minds and pressures them to smash into a cookie cutter persona. I've known quite a few girls from my high school days that eventually chose to go into sororities and it was not a coincidence that many of those girls in high school were rude, judgmental, and just all around "mean girls". College is about finding individuality, inching away from domestication, and finding their own paths. When you're in a fraternity or sorority, you are turning your back on independency and individuality and trading that for comfortability, friends that are paid for, and lack of social interaction past that lifestyle.

As if people not in Greek Life just can't understand or see the good in what some chapters do. Plus, the person who spoke out was in Greek Life, she wasn't saying the whole organization was bad just that there were troubling situations. When a person can't even say "We have some bad apples" you wonder.

I experienced all the drama, gossip, cliques, BS crap, cheating but there are positive aspects: tons of opportunities for leadership as far as chairing programs, joining an exec board, fundraising for the sorority non profit.. even learning how to run a professional meeting using Robert’s Rules... learning to read bi-laws. Sororities are like little franchises and so you get a peak into being a part of a business. Anyway but ya on another note depending on who you choose to be your circle of friends within the sorority will make it or break it for you. I also was in very “average looking” sorority, not necessarily rich or anything (but equally “fun” haha), so we were not known as being bourgeois stuck up types.

      As a person of color who joined a "white" sorority (quotes because that's changing) its everywhere but not in every house. It depends on the reason why you're joining. There are people who want an extended version of highschool who only care about whose attractive or cool, but there are others like the one I joined that values and focuses on diversity and individuality. I grew up in a predominantly white school and I'm the suburbs so it was where I found my place easier but I also just hate the separation and I am trying to help be the difference so more people of color feel welcomed in places that used to be white only or anything like that. But it's not all bad and some are honestly great I joined one but unfortunately that lack of the cookie cutter image or party girl image gets us listed as bottom tier and weird without people actually meeting us. I try to make friends with people outside of Greek Life to avoid being put into a box because of the reputation of my sorority or Greek Life in general because I just want to be comfortable to be myself and not miss out on any opportunities or experiences

    In other countries when you go to Uni you pick and choose interest groups. None of this sorority -mind control, pack mentality, bulling and hazing. Its ludicrous. You are an adult. You make friends with whoever you want to. You join groups or you don't. Nothing is ever forced on you. It's not meant to be prison - its a place to study to further your education and career options. Seriously students should be boycotting this rubbish.

    I can tell you I love my sorority, we are a family. I get nothing but love and support from them. We are against hazing and have set out to stop any. We do so many positivie things in service and our values, and it is meaningful to us. You can go out if you want, but it is never expected of your, youre never pressure. Since I've join my sorority I have felt nothing but love and warmth and understanding and support. I wish we weren't shown in such a negative light. They always show the bad, never the good.

      Joining a sorority was the best decision I’ve probably ever made. My house is so diverse and there’s a variety of those who want to go out often and those who decide to stay in on the weekends. It’s way more than what a good percentage of non-sorority members view of it- we are making a difference in our community and they are truly my extended family. Thank you for standing up for us! ❤️

      I think you didn't see the video or you have learning problems because they actually show a group of people that they were saying the same as you ( at 01:43) . 🤦‍♂️
      But the main point Is most of them are bad, half of the sororities are on probation for a reason... And nothing change.
      The ones that are good like you say are not even good because they don't change the paradigms. As example do you think good ones change othe people minds and influence them in to being a better student? The answer is no the good ones remain the same with the same number of students trying to get in, while the bad ones attract more students so they do change things for worse... That's why it's a critical issue.

    Greek life is what you make of it. YOU make the letters the letters don't make you! If you don't agree with something stand up and make a change you are a part of a sisterhood and being sister's means bettering each other.

    I remember her, that's the girl that never wanted hang out, never wanted go out, never wanted to participate in functions... I mean she's one person that didn't like the experience, I'm sure the few hundred thousand plus people that do like it are just not getting it and should follow her lead, I mean it's not like the fraternity system has been around for over a hundred years or anything!

    the original Greek people were and always have been black . and if you think that's not true they have taken the identity of the children of the most high yahawah . they not only did that but these white people who really are lepers changed the names of the most high from yahawah to god jehove and a bunch of other names . they changed the names of the yahadam to disciples which is an American word . they changed there names from there given Hebrew names that all started with yah because his people are called by his name . they changed there names to latin, American, names so that they would reflect them . so they have history but why would they want to hide there identity
