  • So as many of you know, I am from Cleveland, Ohio, a city not known for their watchmaking, but today I get to flex my hometown pride looking at an undervalued brand, Ball Watch Company, that originated after a tragic crash in Kipton, Ohio. In this video, we head to the place where this brand got its start and take a look at one of their awesome pieces, Engineer M Marvelight with a new in-house movement.

Growing up in Mansfield Ohio in the 1950’s I can remember going to Cleveland for Christmas Shopping. In that time period
Webb C Ball had a very high level name in Ohio comparable to Tiffanies. I remember the store . My parents would point it
to me. It long gone now, but I remember it. Today I own gold 18s. 21 jeweled Illinois Bunn Special from 1913.
It is a railroad watch. It is very accurate and I think it is comparable in accuracy to modern watches. I have been thinking
about buying a Ball pocket watch but I may consider a modern ball watch.

    • @Mattthewanderer
      @Mattthewanderer Před 3 lety +2

I love this. Mansfield is my hometown and there is so much history wrapped up in the area with railroads keeping many of those stories. I would love to have experienced seeing that shoppe as a child and experiencing the thrill of Cleveland Christmas shopping with the inevitable dinner out and falling asleep in the backseat on the way home. It sounds like you value your rich experiences. Thank you for sharing.

Teddy, that was a great review. I love the historical background and bringing us right to the town of Kipton to tell the brands story. I have always liked or been drawn to the brand as my Grandfather worked on the Erie RR through the depression years. When I learned about the brands association with the RR industry I could not help but be drawn to it. I learned much more from your video than I have been able to garner from other sources. I loved Bart's comment on relevance and before we went to the moon the RR industry built our country. I never hear anyone review these watches in depth. They are underrated. Well Done!

The movement looks like a work of art, i love the open space back there. A nice juxtaposition of minimalism with the highly decorated surfaces. You should be proud. Teddy,
Thank you very much for this review. As the son and grandson of railroad men, I well remember my dad going to work with a pocket watch in the front pocket of his overalls and a tachometer scale chronograph in his wrist.
The chronograph was a Garland - one of the names of the Ball Factory warehouses in Cleveland (we were from Buffalo). I believe the Garland watches were similar to the Rolex/Tudor branding - not quite as high end as the Ball watches but made to a Ball standard. I know for sure the watch was railroad certified because I remember my father going for the annual NY Central certification. That watch today is in my collection and keeps excellent time for a watch over 70 years old. The chronograph works like a champ. Both pushers and the crown are slightly oversized f/u/w gloves.
Of all the new Ball watches, the watch you reviewed definitely is the most iconic and, while out of my budget, certainly the Ball I would like to wear.
    Best wishes for good health,

That in my opinion is one of the best video reviews you’ve done. They are all really good however the quality and detail in this review shows through. I thought the western flair of the music was dead on. Being onsite added so much to the historic portrayal of the brand. I loved that you pulled in the old photos of the era and weaved them in with current on location photos and video. I’ve been looking at Ball for a while. Haven’t yet pulled the trigger as they have such variety so it’s tough to decide, they’re relatively expensive but the biggest reason is you never see them on the street in person and they’re rarely reviewed so it’s difficult to appreciate them. Your photography and videography goes a long way to bridge the gap. Again. Very well done

Many thanks for a great presentation. One day I was thinking about the 1891 train wreck so I used a great (and free) historical newspaper database and read the accounts filed in the local papers. Reading the news stories provided depth and drama to a railroad tragedy that occurred over 120 years ago. Others have praised many aspects of the Ball watch so all I will add is their bracelets punch well above their weight class.

Thanks Teddy, This video made me pull the trigger on the 40mm w black dial. Great to hear about the history, the cinematography and edit are on point, and those closeups are very well done. Favorite watch in a growing collection. Gives off an oyster perpetual vibe while still having it's own personality, and looks good with everything. 80hr power! Nothing beats the tritium at night, it's always there at a glance when the lume is long gone. The bracelet hasn't come off this one yet, and probably won't, even though it's a scratch magnet.
Notes to anyone deciding who might not get there hands on one first, the hour indices look slimmer in the dark (the polished borders add visual weight in the light) so the tritium tubes are a better match visually to the ones on the hands at night. The larger 43mm watch size has different shaped hands (not a fan) I would listen to the recommendation and get the 40mm. Embarrassing, but it took me a minute to figure out how to undo the bracelet...It pops open when you pull on the right link, concealing the butterfly clasp mechanism (no side buttons). Also love the way the seconds hand tip catches the light. A great design detail.

Love this review Teddy as I was an Engineer on the railroad for 42 years... Retired now... Actually the headquarters for Locomotive Engineers was located in Cleveland, still is... (Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers)... Ball makes great time pieces and some of my fellow workers had Ball pocket watches... I actually wore my Grandfathers Elgin "B.W. Raymond" pocket watch for about 20 years (that my Mom gave me when I hired out and she kept after her Dad passed) before I went to a Seiko wrist watch, railroad approved of course... Had to get my pocket watch inspected, early in my career, every couple years for accuracy... Time is of essence on the RR... Still have my Elgin... Love this Ball Engineer, beautiful watch and love the case back with the decorated rotor and engraving and the leather strap, awesome... Underrated is a fact when it comes to Ball agree with your assessment....Loved your review...! GG... Indiana

As a native Clevelander myself, I find myself feeling a sense of pride wearing my Ball watch. I learned about the brand right here on CZcams when I was looking for some info on quality timepieces featuring a magnified date window. As I advance in years I find reading the tiny little date indicator on analog watch faces more of a challenge. I watched a video review of the Fireman Victory, and looked no further. I bought a Fireman Nightbreaker within a week. That was about a year ago. Today I purchased an NOS Engineer II from 2014 at an online auction, COSC certified on a genuine crocodile strap with a white face; a watch that retails for $2700 cost me a mere $900. It feels so good to finally have a pair of Balls. My dream has always been to own an Omega watch, but I’m really beginning to rethink that. I don’t think I’m compromising anything by wearing a Ball watch instead. They make one to suit everybody’s taste and need, they’re reasonably priced, and the overall value can’t be beat. Thank you for your deep dive into the company’s history and the importance of Mr. Ball’s contribution to the standardization of timekeeping.

There are plenty of watches to pro and conn about today. Great for buyers and reviewing , but for some of us a watch on the wrist is about how and why time is told.
I have the black face Fireman Ducks Unlimited and love it , for so many reasons. Still deciding on my next Ball, Oris, ( big crown) and Omega (seamaster - speed master) .

One of your BEST reviews so far, I liked the content. I myself am looking to pickup the Marvelight (with cyclop).
I’d like more reviews on microbrand watches NOT fashion watches and like to see something on affordable Fortis watches.
Already a subscriber and have the bell notification, so let’s see more on these kind of watches.

Teddy, fantastic review. My guess is that many watch collectors love the history of the brands they purchase, and Ball has a fantastic story. I have tried on the Ball Trainmaster Legend with the Pewter color dial and considered adding to my collection. Central Watch in Grand Central Station here in NYC carries the brand and I always look at them whenever I walk by the store.

Great video! My dad worked for Canadian National Railway and he gave me the Ball pocket watch he used for 36 years. I have a soft spot for Ball watches and I like their Trainmaster line. Keep up the great work! Cheers from Canada.

I recently purchased an Engineer III Marvelight. It features an ETA 2824-2 movement that must be regulated by Ball because on my timegrapher it is running at a solid +2 sec/day. Mine sports the blue sunburst dial and it is a beauty. I am so very impressed by this piece that is has not left my wrist since it arrived. Thanks for showcasing this often overlooked brand.

Just go this piece from Gnomon watches .... and it’s amazing!!. I had an omega Seamaster (bond era), and I have to say the finishing is definitely on par! The case, tritium tubes, weight, build quality, everything’s spot on! Also the in-house caliber has been running +1 seconds for the past week, and is finished beautifully. Having handled a Seamaster Aquaterra at an omega ad, I’d say the case and movement finishing is to a similar level. Overall very pleased!! Gonna be a great beater/everyday watch. Great review Teddy

Excellent review of a fine watch company. I had looked into them as a "possible watch" but backed off due to there price. Now that i know more of its history, they are back in the hunt. Also i much prefer your intro to this video, well done and thank you.

I was looking at the Engineer M Marvelight watches a few months ago, and I agree, they are underrated and go almost unnoticed. At that time, I was just looking for a 1000 or less every day wear piece, but this watch almost made me reconsider.

Wow, awesome video! Ball deserves the care and attention. Amazing brand. I picked up a Fireman Glory to try them out. Immediately ordered the Enterprise with cyclops, and then purchased the Blue Trainmaster Moon Phase lol

This is a great review. I had just dived deep into this brand and there is very little content out there featuring this in-house movement. I dont see these come up for sale often but if i see one depreciated, i want to swing for it. I really like the gas tubes.
