      I think Teddy is referring to the TGV effect regarding Squale prices which have gone up since TGV publicised the brand and it’s watches, even developing his own colorway/TGV dial with them.

    The need for accurate and precise timekeeping once railways were established and timetables were required to stop trains from colliding is a fantastic historical story and well worth looking into. It also forced the need for standardized as opposed to local time to adjust those watches to.

    • @stuartcole4845
      @stuartcole4845 Před 3 lety +8

      Tell me about it. About 10 years ago I was in far eastern Siberia getting the train to Moscow on the Trans-Siberian railway after coming up from Mongolia. What I found out the day I caught the train was that all trains arrive and depart using Moscow time, which was like 5 time zones from where I was. It makes sense for the railway operators but is incredibly confusing for foreign passengers like I was! “What do you mean the 6am train to Moscow actually leaves at midday?” 😂

For example the higher end Seiko watches that compete money wise with well known Swiss brands shows someone who places build specifics and heritage above general brand awareness. My two cents; Teddy's a class act and didn't mean anything negative about the "TGV Effect". Teddy's mention of the "TGV Effect" is a nod to TGV/Tristano and highlighting how influential he can be. Specifically regarding the Squale brand. Face it, it's an Italian watch ownership since the 1980s with solid Swiss movements and TGV's showcasing how proud he is by talking about Squale watches in many, many of his reviews ... simply b/c he can. And why not?
      TGV can't control if others get "tired" of hearing about Squale watches but it's an "effect" nonetheless. Teddy simply pointed that out.

    Thanks for a super good video - and especially thanks for rediscovering the watch brand Ball - which has been under my radar for a while. The story of fabricating a watch that was more accurate to avoid train collisions has greatly contributed to the fact that I now want to go in search of a Ball watch. Also thank you for focusing on Blancpain which is also in my opinion a far more interesting choice instead of the always mainstream Rolex Sub. Finally - I have been following you for a number of years and it really suits you to get a little older. You seem to rest more in yourself and you have geared down in speech speed if you understand what I mean. Thank you from your watchfreind from Copenhagen Denmark.

      With antiquated technologies like watches, especially mechanical watches, this question doesn't really make sense. Watches are wearable art, mostly to be enjoyed by you and you alone. Whether it's the history of the company, the detail and complexity of the movement, the design of the bezels, collecting watches is extremely personal as a pursuit. You may be very satisfied with your OG Casio f91w ($10), or you could drop a million on a watch an astronaut wore to space. It's a choose your own adventure that shouldn't get dictated to you.

They’re great watches that are entry level luxury affordable, but provide much more for what you actually pay. It takes guys like you with a voice to get them the recognition I believe they deserve though. Great video though. I def have agreed with Oris and heard you speak highly of Hamilton as well.
