  • Herby and Maddie take a vacation from the boat work and venture off to the magical land of Flores (pronounced Floresh) where the encounter untouched natural beauty in the westernmost point of Europe and the most western Portuguese Colony.
    Herby and Maddie saw Flores in the distance as they entered the Azores archipelago after sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, but they didn't get a great view of all of its splendors. By taking advantage of the great deals available on TravelGnu, they flew to Flores for a week where they rented a car and stayed in a quaint Bed & Breakfast while they explored the island.
    Join them as they explore this seldom visited island in the Atlantic!

    I spent 3 months on Flores in the summer of 1967 as part of a University expedition. I was 19 when I arrived. It is amazing how much development there has been since then - the roads, the buildings, the airport, the camping sites, the pathways - none of that was there. Whaling was still going on with rowed boats and hand-thrown spears. Diesel launches were only used to tow the catch back to the whaling station. We watched a whale being dismembered. Oddly, after the oils, blubber and teeth (ivory) had been removed, the rest was just slid back down the slipway into the sea. ll that meat wasted on an island which at the time was a genuine peasant economy with food not always plentiful.
    Where the airstrip is was where the Santa Cruz football pitch was, partly levelled out of solid rock! Hardest pitch I ever played on!
    The people were amazingly friendly. We got there by the fortnightly cattle-cargo boat, the Carvahlo Aruja (that spelling is wrong!) and the port couldn't take it: everything had to be transferred to and from land by small boats - including cattle!
    What a summer!

      Wow that’s quite a story! I’m so glad they stopped the whaling…

      Yes. It wasn't really ani issue over 50 years ago. The people were dirt poor and did things like fishing for sardines one at a time with a rod and line!

    Sounds like Flores still has the OLD Spanish Custom of Daily Siesta Time, or Nap Time...Damn! I LOVE the Drone Shots of the Waterfall! Never see that on NatGeo. Those drones ARE Cool, almost as Cool as Socks on a Mouse! Plus you can use them as Forward Recon Scouts for the boat. As far as the Milk, as long as it's NOT SOY. Soy milk is self-induced Emasculation. NO Man needs THAT.

    friends.......The Azores archipelago aint a Portuguese colony alright? actually it is a Autonomous Region of Portugal, with their own Government, elected officials and so on. It isnt ruled by Portugal, it is Portugal!

    What a stunning place, awesome views. Thank you for showing us that place. It reminds me so much of England - the moors in Wales, the rocky lake district in the North west and the moors close to my home town in NE England.

    Hi guy , you sure get a mixture of comments. The Azores are quite special. A combination of Hawaii , PNW and Scotland with out the crowds. Or maybe they are like the Azores! It's all in the middle of the freaking Atlantic too. Those drone shot add a lot to the video. You must be doing something right as I think the was 4 ads in this video! Cheers Warren

    You really didn't need to bring milk on your hike, there were plenty of friendly cows to milk. Moo!

    Did it make a sound 10:47, yes it’s the same concept as…if a small fire is left in the desert and there ’s nobody there to feel the heat or see the fire, is the fire still hot and does it still give off light. Answers on a postcard.

    Are swim shoes adequate for trekking those Rocky paths?
    Water, water, everywhere,
    Nor any drop to drink.”
    Cookies, cookies in the pack,

    • @RiggingDoctor
      @RiggingDoctor  Před 5 lety

      They held up really well and gave good traction on the rocky paths! The only downside to them is that since they drain water very well, that means that your first step into a puddle is going to result in a very wet foot. But they do dry quickly 😋

    This video did not show the reality of Flores Island, there is some facts that are not true.. like the lagoons storing water in the winter for use in the summer..

    Really Herb, Milk on a hike!! Well if you do watch the vids much herby is kind of a goofball!!! Ha Ha Ha!! No offence meant Herb! With all the cows there, is beef affordable there?

    • @RiggingDoctor
      @RiggingDoctor  Před 5 lety +1

      Affordable and delicious! The only issue is the cows walk a lot and are tough. So the steaks are sliced thin and so tasty!!

      @@RiggingDoctor I don't know if you noticed or not, I changed my channel name a little, added "On Tilt Sailing" to let people know that is a sailboat channel. What do you think?

    • @RiggingDoctor
      @RiggingDoctor  Před 5 lety +1

      Love it! I noticed the change a few days ago :) Don't let slow growth in the beginning deter you. It takes a looong time to get a good following. We've been doing our channel for almost 3 years and it's still considered tiny! Doesn't mean it's not fun though :)
