Milwaukee trimmers come with these and they are fantastic as long as the line does not get bound up inside. The speed feed probably works really well with smaller, smooth line. I cut a lot of rough weeds with my Echo 2030T and .105 Echo Diamond line. I often have issues with the line getting hung up or "welding" to itself insided of the head. Been thinking about going back to a two line head with this larger weedeater setup. The line cuts heavy stuff quite well, but the hangups are irritating.

Sadly, the 450 is being discontinued & being replaced by the 500 that is known to have issues. The 500 transfers heat into the head & can melt your line together during hot weather. Echo is aware of the problem, & hopefully they address it. Chickiac has been sharing this info.

I have a Stihl FS 45 FrankenTrimmer (FS 45 powerhead with an FS 55 shaft/gearbox). I use the Echo SpeedFeed 400 on it and it's awesome and so easy to refill the line. I just had to refill the line on mine. The only reason it took me over 20 minutes was because I had to look for the line and it was right in front of my face! My cousin has the regular FS 45 curved shaft trimmer and he went with the AutoCut C 6-2 (since the SpeedFeed doesn't go on Stihl curved shaft trimmers) for it since it's almost the same and it too is rather easy to spool line back in.

hey steve. i bought one of these last year and really tried to like it. No way that I could make it work for me on my straight shaft sthil trimmer. We have long grass, knee high, and it winds it up and I spent all my time getting the grass off. So, I tossed it into a drawer and put back on the sthil trimmer head which never gets wound up with grass. Maybe good for a suburban yard but not for me in the country. I tried it already, few years ago. On a Stihl, and I’ve got a 94R, 111RX and 111R, the line holes in the Speed Feed barely line up with the cutter. Line wasn’t getting trimmed efficiently when fed. Went to the Husqvarna universal heads and never looked back. Line holes are in the middle of the Stihl cutters, line feeds MUCH easier than OEM Stihl heads, easier to load, easier to bump feed, and even at a lower rpm… it’s better than the Echo or OEM Stihl. I keep spare Husqvarna heads pre-loaded and when empty just swap in a loaded head. Time is money, and the Husqvarna universal head is superior in quality and efficiency to Stihl or Echo.

I installed a Speed-Line 400 on my Stihl FS91. The first issue I had was the installation instructions told me to use the wrong insert fo my brushsaw. I did find the proper instuctions on YT and got it installed. I like the easy loading of the line, but found it seems to spool the line out too much. I'm not sure if there is a problem with my install but like I said the line seems to feed excessively. I also find that using it seemed to lug the engine more than normal, due to the excessive line feeding issue.
I took it back off the unit and reinstalled the Stihl head that came with my brushsaw. It takes longer to reload the line but hey I'm old and can use the extra downtime to refill it...and...I'm not doing this for a living, just cleaning up around my yard (about 3 1/2 Acres).
    Cheers from NB

I have the earlier head on my echo and it works similarly but you line it up and put the ends of the line in wind it up until the whole thing is on then cut the middle. No need to find the middle of the line. The only downside is your limited to .095 line. I plan to get a speed feed once I use up my .095 so I can get .105 black diamond.

I just did this yesterday. When I go trimming, I take a length of string with me in my back pocket. When the head runs out, I'm back up and running in about a minute. With the old style heads that needed to be taken apart, that's at least a 5 minute process.

not sure if i agree but, i may try one after this head on my echo srm2400sb wears out which i have had since the 90's. i put a bolt and fender washer through the bump knob so it wouldn't wear out so fast and this one has lasted for more than 5 years and i use it a lot at home and church.

Well you've sold me on it! I've been considering these for my Stihl because I despise re-spooling the double feed spools that are standard for it. So many steps for them as opposed to this simple process. Next time I am in to town I'll get one to try out. Looks very simple. I love simple because it gets me back too work faster. Thanks for yet another cool demonstration. 😊

I had this exact problem with a FS46 and the Stihl dealer got mad at me for buying something I could not understand but he could not explain. I left in frustration and next day a guy at work told me he had the same problem but changed his system over to a poly cut blade kit from Still which worked great. I did the same thing though the Stihl dealer said it would not fit and it has worked great ever since. This is my last Stihl product simply due to the customer service which expects the customer to figure out what their sales staff cannot explain. Home Depot has better customer service than Stihl and boy is that a long way down in expectations. To be fair, my Stihl 180c chainsaw has worked great.

I've been using these for years on my Echo PAS-225 - my only complaint is occasionally I will have trimmer line break off near the hole on the speed feed causing the remaining line to coil inside and only feed out of one side. Any tips for resolving this issue? Might also be worth doing a short & sweet video on attaching / detaching that darn thing from the trimmer (My problem is I always misplace the darn Allen key or forget the thread direction, though a screwdriver works in a pinch). Cheers!

I wish they provided a better list of compatible trimmers. I've got a Hitachi that's been going strong for 25 years and I'm not sure whether it would fit. But I can change the line in the original head in my sleep at this point, and it accommodates four different sizes of line which is nice because I use .105 sometimes for really tough stuff. I'll probably just keep what I've got because it works and because I don't want to throw away 50 yds of line that won't fit in a different head.

I have a twin cut-line head on my Stihl straight shaft. So you have to cut and feed in the 14" or so pieces, but you have four strings coming out of the head. I love it. I wanted to try this speed head on my other trimmer, but it's a curved shaft Stihl, and I ain't McGyver. Oh well.

I love speed feed 400 heads but something has happened in the last few years that make them wear out prematurely! Original speed feed on my Echo trimmer lasted over 5 years. I have just over a year on an OEM replacement purchased from a local parts dealer and it is already worn out. They must be using a lower grade of plastic!

Ego has one built in on some of their models. I bought one this spring and it is super easy to reload. The only con I have with it is, the battery runs out before all my trim work is done. But, I’m retired and have plenty of time. So I just do part of the trimming before I mow and finish it up afterwards. Letting the battery recharge while I’m mowing.
