    This gent sold me on the dynamic vs. the model d. So glad I got this one, as it’s smooth, and does not forgive bad technique. Don’t want to be one of those indoor rowers with big arms yanking the handle in. Very pleased, even though it’s harder at first to get the rhythm right.

    Great explanation. This makes so much sense to improve the rowing stroke. This should be the machine in every boat club.
    I guess this machine is probably better than using a pair of slides on a regular ergo.

    Separating out the specific parts and tools for each of the seven step assembly process steps was brilliant on the part of the manufacturer. For the price, I am impressed at how sturdy this czcams.com/users/postUgkxvObaTzoHoHQLL4lHbJQmExHqsrZQm-f7 unit is and it does go together easily. Well, I was puzzled at first at Step 5 and maybe the instructions should mention that rail #62 needs to be tilted upwards a little to get the rail to fit into the main part #44. I like it that the rower can be stored vertically in a really small amount of space, but be forewarned that this rower is top heavy and for safety you'll need at least two bungee cords to keep the unit upright, attaching them to something; in my case to a third garage door. I have had this unit only a short time, and I will post an update once I've had it for a year. As for working your legs, I have to admit that I'm mainly rowing for upper body strength and I use other forms of exercise for leg strength (like walking fast, biking, or using a trampoline. But if you pull as far forward as possible, then you can give preference to your legs for the first 4 feet or so of travel. I also admit to not taking the two electronic connectors apart at Step 7. I simply inserted the two batteries while the other parts remained connected. By the way, there is plenty of resistance here, even in the lowest resistance settings. Kudos to Sunny Health & Fitness !

    I am glad that you posted a video on this! I asked about investing in the C2 Dynamic earlier last week online and I am really convinced it is the right one for me! I think this will be really nice because there is going to be less strain on my back and eventually being able to increase training volume over time, because I don't need to recover as long between workouts because my lower back gets too sore from the high impact on the static.

    Excellent video! This is the first one that I saw that explained not only the differences between the C2 D and the C2 Dynamic, but also showed and explained what its advantages are for training towards rowing on the water.
    One question that I have, is how does this compare with training on a C2 D that is set up on slides? What are the pros and cons between the two? I find that using the slides has made me more aware of my technique and helped me to fine tune my technique, because it seems to be less forgiving of bad form and timing.
    Thank you Eric for this video. All the best!

    Thanks Eric for this video. It convinced me to get a dynamic. While I have had a model D in the past, I felt that if I want to get on the water, improve technique and reduce potential back issues this is the machine. Ok, I can't compete in indoor rowing but if I can get to the club to record a time I am going to have better technique on the D = better competition times anyway.

      That is my home setup too!
      I bought mine a couple of years just before they introduced the Dynamic model, which I have never had an occasion to try, but have often wonder, if I should one day get one, if only because of its more compact footprint. Fortunately, space is not an issue for me and the C2 D and slides are so robust and easy to maintain that unless there would be a mark advantage to switch over, I am no longer considering the idea to do so. Gordon, I would imagine that you feel this way too about your rig?

    Hi, Eric. I used to be a competitive rower. Then I became permanently disabled about 10 years ago. Because the dynamic erg is gentler on my back, it has allowed me to return to the sport after all that time. I adore my machine. I would also very much appreciate it if you would do one of your CZcams rows on the dynamic, please. Of course, your time is limited. But if you could lead a single row-along-with-the-video session on the dynamic, I (and I hope others) would be grateful, please. Thank you. Best, Jamie, Westfield, NJ, USA

One question I have is for beginning rowers (such as myself) who are looking to build technique but also use the rower as a form of exercise more so than to get on the water, will this dynamic rower be better than the stationary one? I really appreciate any input you can provide.

    Many thanks for the videos, they are great I am thinking about one of these, I am new to this, having been a keen marathon kayaker in the past, now 53 and trying to keep things going. If its so great, why it is not featured in any of your other videos? I do have issues and am definietely looking for a comfortable machine, if it puts less 'strain' on me, thats good. We have a local gig club, but don't ever expect to row on the water in a sliding seat boat.

    Hi Eric, good video. We do everything on dynamics, and I'm currently struggling with lifting my shoulders at the front to get connected, definitely harder technically than a static. I'm curious that you said it's slower though, because I've found the higher rate means I can go faster even with the technical challenges. Do you just mean slower for rate-capped pieces, or were your best results, 2k/5k etc, actually done on a static?

  • @MattSargentrower
    @MattSargentrower Před 4 lety +12

    Firstly, great video, and totally agree with the advantages of the dynamic. I row a C2 on sliders and love the boat like feel it provides. I have tried the C2 dynamic a few times and I can't get as "comfortable" as I am on the sliders. My "comfort" may just be my lack of technique. What I find disconcerting on the dynamic is the motion of the seat at the finish. What I notice (and similarly observe in this video) is that the seat changes direction before the end of the finish. It moves slightly towards the stern as the finish is being drawn into the body. When the finish is complete, this stern-ward motion ceases. I don't notice this "double hitch" on the sliders. Any thoughts as to what I am feeling and why this is different on the sliders?

    Hi Éric, Many thanks for your explanations and your feeling descriptions. I’ve got a Dynamic 4 Year ago. I much appreciate the flow in riding this machine, but what I’ve found hard to feel and to find, in comparison with a classic ergo, is when aiming to apply more power. With a Classic ergo, it’s easy to feel by the resistance of the wheel through the handle at catch. Would you say this feeling on a Classic is overplaid regarding rowing on a boat and so, useless ? Thanks in advance for your response and one more time :´ chapeau for your unrivalled rowing career ! ´

  • @jlemoo2

    FWIW, I trained for a season on the dynamic and did CRASH B on the model D in about the time I was hoping for (7:01). I didn't even notice that I wasn't on a dynamic erg for the race. I no longer have access to a dynamic erg, but, if I were going to get a new rowing machine, it would be this one because of the better on-the-water feel and the ability to get up to higher ratings.

  • @TravisGardner
    @TravisGardner Před 4 lety

    Eric, I've always held an opposite view on the relative benefits of the C2 Rower on Sliders vs the C2 Dynamic. With regard to the handle, in the boat when you release the water the forward momentum of the boat creates a relative motion in the handle whereas it moves away from the body. While the mechanics have a different origin (i.e. the bungee) I believe the bungee on the standard rowers simulates this relative motion well. Also, in the boat you are always putting weight on the handle through the recovery to keep the blade from dropping back to the water. On the dynamic, you have to hold the handle up because it would fall if you let it go. Upward pressure on the handle is very unnatural in the boat (only necessary for placement at the front end). The pressure the bungee creates on the front of the grip effectively eliminates this need to hold the handle up. For these reasons I've considered the erg on sliders to be the better simulation of in-boat rowing with respect to rower/handle interaction. Curious about your thoughts on these considerations.

    • @ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302
      @ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302  Před 4 lety +10

      Travis Gardner I get your point around the weight in he handle, but the motion on the recoil of the chain is wayyy too fast on the standard or sliders compared to the boat. There is still some recoil on the dynamic, but it’s linked with the feet a lot better and a lot closer to water rowing. The only reason you feel that in your handle is that the chain is trying to pull itself back into the cog well as fast as it can. That’s why you don’t feel any pressure to keep it up. But the dynamic, just like he oar, you should be able to have the feeling in the fingers and hands of being able to change height of he handle, like you’d have too with balance in the boat. Yes the boat glides underneath you, but you still have to engage the hip flexors and core a lot more to create that momentum where it happens very easy on sliders standard or rp3. The dynamic is about a feel and being in a better position and the connection around the catch is the best as if the timing is not correct like the water, you will loose speed. The standard and Rp3 with the gearing has a better cog and gear change which is why it’s “easy” to start the drive, where dynamic you “have” to have the connect or you loose the speed. That’s one of the big reasons why it’s the “best” technique machine.

  • @AchimBehrens
    @AchimBehrens Před 4 lety +3

    What do you think about C2 with slides as a compromise for the dynamic erg?
    Since most rowing clubs (or people) cant afford both machines and the testings will be done on a C2, so most times people will go to buy the C2. But i think putting it on slides is a good compromise to get some focus away from going hard at the front for the best splits.

    • @ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302
      @ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302  Před 4 lety +8

      The slides are also great as it teaches you around the connection and change in direction around the catch. the dynamic is set apart from anything else because there is no elastic resistance with the machine coming back and helping you in that way. the Rp3 and sliders use the machines natural recoil with the bungee and chain to help with the motion, where as the dynamic you have to do a lot more yourself, and there is a little bit of assistance, but its "The Most" similar feeling to being on the water.

      The Concept2 Model D (or E) are the standard for indoor rowing, including competitive indoor rowing. However, if you plan on doing serious rowing on water, that is when a dynamic rowers might make more sense. I used a Model D on slides (which took up quite a bit of floor space in our exercise room/office) until the end of 2016, when I purchased the C2 Dynamic. Far more compact than any other rowing erg. As you can see in Eric’s video, it offers all the benefits of an erg on slides but forces you to further improve and refine your technique if you want to get splits not too far from those achieved on a static erg. Gives a great workout but is extremely back friendly. The Dynamic might sell far fewer units than the Model Ds, but I love it.

    I can see this helping rowing technique on the water, but I think a static will make my legs stronger. Why? Because not only do my legs push my 200+ pound body along a track, but they also have to contract to draw my 200+ pound forward on the slide. There's no way there's 200 or 250 pounds being moved on a dynamic machine. Same in a boat, you basically slide forward as a consequence of the boat moving back, there's no strong contraction of the hamstrings like on a static rower. He's basically pumping his legs in and out with zero resistance. My 2 cents.
