As a person on the lower end of the income scale, I appreciate this video. I work in a recycling center and am hard on my boots. I’ve been lucky with thrifting, but I also had to buy a pair of cheap boots on a big shopping site during the pandemic. I again learned that cheap items are often more expensive in the long run.
I'm in the same boat here to. I've found some killer deals on Poshmark for work boots.
@@waynedub1167 Thanks for the tip.
@@jonlouis2582 Hopefully it helps ya out. And if you find a dany pair remember to oil them often if you didn't already.
Thursday’s are by no means work boots. Fine for a casual office or a short hike, but not working on a plant or factory.
@@waynedub1167 Since Nike Cortez has gone up , l have went to Poshmark too
Thanks so much for the review, we're happy to hear you love your Vanguards!
For us guys in Europe American boots are much more due to the import price. Thursday ended up being around 250e and grant stone in alden price range. Meermin on the other hand is much more friendly with free shipping so it ends up costing as stated on the page
I find the same thing...and Meermin quality is as good as Thursdays.
Yeah not everyone includes taxes with global shipping, it makes a big difference for Eurobros
Europe has access to vast amount of great boot makers that aren’t USA brands. You can count on 1 hand the number of USA shoe and boot makers that are of good quality.
@@pattgsm what would you recomand? I would love to know. Moest of the hipe is around usa boots so im really courious. Urban shepard is interesting one as well as few from this video. But im always courious for more knowlage
@@brunonjezic6208 Bootlosophy CZcams channel reviews a wide range of rugged boot makers and not just USA makers.
I have quite a few Thursday boots. I’ve looked at other brands but for some reason Thursday seems to grab my attention more. The style is better with Thursday. Subtle things make such a difference and they’re doing it right.
Right! They also just have a huge range of leathers which is another reason for the crossover appeal
I'm a huge fan also!
This video was great! You highlighted a lot of boot companies that I've been wanting to check out that I completely forgot about like Meermin, Urban Shepard and Oliver Cabell.
Yeah even I forget about Meermin but their collection has gotten a lot better over the years. Glad this helped man
Really enjoyed this video as a woman. I love shoes, but for women, shoe content is sadly mostly about design and brand rather than their engineering and quality.
great stuff as always sir!!!!!!! just got me some thursdays and am surprised by how much i'm loving them
Fabulous, the Explorer!
I think Taft boots deserve a shoutout, specifically for those who already have a decent boot collection. They aren’t as versatile but they are definitely a great piece to have to stand out from your other footwear because of their color contrast and materials.
Taft are in the full article! I love my Jack boots.
I am waiting for my first pair of Parkhurst, though they aren’t on your list any longer!! I am excited to check those out!
Jim Green, while not the best looking of boots, are outstanding value for what you get.
Christ they're so ugly though.
@@Stridewise I think you could wear their African Ranger with shorts
Great update. Interested in several of the new brands...
Thank you. I always enjoy your videos.
I bought the thorogood Moc toe boots a couple of years ago and found them to be very comfortable, actually was quite surprised just how nice and comfortable they were, but I paid more as got them here in Australia. They were closer to $500 but 100% worth it and would buy them again.
Truly great video thank you.
thanks for the great video! in the dress shoes range, i can't find a review for myrqvist, who have great looking boots too. I'd love to watch you review them!!
I still love my thorogood 4364's, for a boot I can do everything in, the machined brass speed hooks are one of the best things about them. Too many other boots use chintzy stamped speed hooks that bend easily.
Thorogood may not be the best heritage type boot out there but they do hold up and the balance is great for an affordable working boot.
Recently I've gotten into footwear by footskins, their Moccasin walking boots are the most comfortable footwear I've ever worn.
I have a pair of Helm boots. Like them a lot. Thanks for Stridewise discount too..Even a better deal.
So far it’s a good boot. Fit is good and the brake in is very easy..
Thanks again for your channel.
That's nice of you Billy! I actually had a pretty tough break in with my Helms, but they're still worth the buy.
I just bought Parkhurst Richmond's in Rust Waxy, factory seconds for $278, shipping included. Was a few surface scratches on the leather, as advertised. I am planning to use these as knock around boots and expect to be rough on them, so no problem on the slight scratches on the leather in a few places. Amazing boot. Great fit at 9.5 D while I am 10 on Brannock, 9 in Red Wing Iron Rangers. I am very impressed with Parkhurst boots. And they can be had for under $300.
Still the best boot review channel out here!
Love the shoutouts to our friends over at Adelante and Astorflex!
Nice video again👍
Did you ever try a Timberland "American craft"?
Those vanguard burnt copper boots are very appealing. Are they somewhat water resistent for winter use?
Hi from down under, really happy for the RM. Williams mention. We don't have many outlets for international boots so I heavily rely on your videos for advice/sizing info.
I have a pair of Vanguards from Thursday and it has been a bit of a squeeze. They must use a skinnier last than the president or capitan because it has been slightly uncomfortable to break in around the toe cap.
Red wing Iron Rangers are a fantastic boot apart from the break in. Probably the worst break in I've ever had apart from the RM Williams stock man boot which I have had for about 5 months and am still trying to break in...
Completely agree with the Thursday Boots mention, I am approaching 9 pairs of them. Meerman and Grant stone are next on the list with a potential for a Red Wing Moc.
Yes, the Vanguard I had to go true to size. Should have mentioned that in the video! I have tremendous respect for an Australian with a boot collection that isn't just RMW, hats off sir
I have a few of these. I have 2 pairs of Thursday Captains and they are the most comfortable boots I own. I have a pair of Diplomats, which I recently had resoled to add a more durable Vibram commando sole (while retaining the original Christy sole as a midsole...it sounds weird but it works, trust me).
I bought a few pairs of Meermins. While the finishing isn't always perfect, they are super comfortable when they are broken in. I have a pair of the Chelseas in Waxy Commander for the winter. As Meermin is a Spanish company, it is a lot more affordable for people in the EU.
🤨 he just said that they’re comfortable lol, you can’t exactly be gaslit but CZcamsrs into thinking a boot is comfortable on you when it actually isn’t lol
@@Unjust1 I feel okay about it. They're comfortable. Every time I wear my Captains, I wonder why I don't wear them more often.
I think they are a good gateway boot for people who want to try GYW footwear, but don't want to invest a lot of money. I can understand people being sniffy about Thursday, but I was happy I got what I paid for.
My favorite boots are a pair of tan Lennertson Chieftains. Check them out. They're great.
I got an Red wing 877 for $177 from ebay and as a factory 2nd. So id say always look through ebay if you can somehow find one hell of a deal from it. I also use poshmark to potentially find more rare things, like red wing mocs in black suede and sage green suede. Enjoy the hunt fam.
Nice! I get Aldens off of eBay. I got some Red Wing Rovers off eBay as seconds but they were seconds because something was really wrong with the footbed and it bruised my arch, no fun! Now I think twice about getting seconds
I love Poshmark! Ebay is weird. In my experience, people are trying to charge way more (and, like, $20 shipping) on ebay
@@Stridewise it says factory 2nd with no cosmetic defect. If you can weigh in, i can maybe figure it out. I do believe that the boot feel wide for a D width. But the width is comparable to Danners quarry which is also at a d so it doesnt seem that much off for me. Id need to get my hands on a brand new one to really see
Lanx boots could be worth a look. Made in the UK and under £250. Haven't tried them myself but just putting it out there
Awesome list.
I have a wide foot and a hard heel strike when I walk. I'm wondering which of these brands have a really good shock absorbing soft outsole with a wide size offering.
This video came out just in time for when I'm looking for a perfect casual boot.
If you like mocs the Thorogoods have a longer lasting sole than the Redwings that will help out with the heel a bit.
They are also more comfortable when it comes to shock seeing as they have a
poron insert. Trade-off for comfort as the man made materials will deteriorate faster than Redwings. That said I've put a lot of work hrs on concrete and pavement in the last 18 months on the Thorogoods. Original insert is still holding up well and the heels are worn some but not ready for a resole yet in my eyes. Available in EE. As Nick mentions they make a good more work oriented boot but they also pull off casual everyday as well.
i only spend a ton of $ on the items i use more frequently. Since, i only wear boots 3 to 4 months a year on average, then i'm usually going for the mid-tier brands (**e.g. Thursday Boots, Beckett Simonon, etc.). I'd love to try the more premium brands, but i would never pay those prices.
I just bought my 3rd pair of Thursday boots with a 4th on the way. They are not that expensive once you see the quality and after you’ve worn them yourself.
What do you think about Golden Fox or Rockrooster?
Thursdays are looking better and better 🤣
How can I get a pair of Vemodalen St Denis boots? I saw your review on an older video but I can’t find them online to order. Has Martin Ericsson ceased making the boots?
What are your thoughts on origin Maine?
Urban Shepherd boots are the second most comfortable pair of boots that I own (first is Viberg) but for the price, Urban Shepard boots are the best boots in this list imo.
I'm always surprised how well known they are!
@@Stridewise I have three pairs!
I want to try some of those. What has your experience been on sizing? They seem like the best built boot for the price out there.
Hey I also have questions about the sizing. How was your experience with the sizing and did you by any chance get the backroads?
Unfortunately Urban Shepherd’s are now €245 + €55 shipping, total €300. Not such a great deal anymore.
Thursday Boot Company makes some ridiculously amazing shoes.
Yay! Another boot video!
Happy to deliver Graham!
Grant Stone has a few boots on sale now, under 300, including the awesome tan suede Chelsea boots that I ironically bought for full price a couple weeks ago.
I love my Adalante Havanas but the break in was a bit rough. My feeling is the standard D width might be a little narrow for some. For me though, they fit fine after the break in.
Speaking of that, I returned my Meermin Chelsea boots because they were comically narrow. It was bizarre.
Lastly, my Helm Hollis boots are super well made, great looking, and comfortable straight out of the box. No break in.
If they were under 300 when *not* temporarily on sale I'd include Grant Stone! I agree that Adelante's D is a little narrow, that's a good point. You have a heck of a collection there, David!
@@Stridewise I'm coming for your job, Nick!
@@davidpalmer9014 if you ever want to review stuff for the site, shoot me an email :)
@@Stridewise Ha! I wish. Public speaking makes me want to barf.

I was wondering if you could do a video on how to get split-size boots. 60% of people have different sized feet. Thanks! Great video!
now that is a great idea. I'll put it on the list!
Just buy a Thursday boot if money is tight. My Captain is going on 5 years old and after substantial wearing , I only had to replace the heal so far. Most guys don’t need overly built expensive boots.
That's exactly it, like there are "boot guys" and there are just regular humans who want something that looks cool, handles rain, matches a modern wardrobe and doesn't cost or weigh very much. For these roundups I try to target the latter
They’re not very comfy tho. I have captains and I can’t walk more than a couple of miles without some kind of pain. Heel is too thick also.
Oh, how about Redback or Solovair?
first and thanksssss strideman
you did it Johnny!
6:28 - Is that a giant hole on the front of the left shoe? Also, two different boots?
Which would have a wider toebox?
Great video Nick, do you have much experience with British boot brands? Trickers, etc. Would love to see a "best British boots under £300" video.
Nice! To be honest I only have Trickers, I'm planning to try out some Crockett & Jones and Loake. But it's hard to justify the cost/work when the vasssst majority of my audience is in the States. Despite this accent lol
@@Stridewise Fair enough. What are your thoughts on the Trickers? I'm after a decent Brogue boot, but they are pretty pricey.
I have a pair of Thursday captain boots and a pair of Wolverine 1000 mile boots. Im sticking with them . I do not wear boots that often to get right into better boots . Ps , I do wear timberland boots in the wintertime.
honestly thursday captain and wolverine 1k are great boots! one more traditional chromexcel round toe leather sole, one more modern and dress uppable - good work! i'm going to refilm my thursday vs wolverine video this year
Do you still recommend John Doe shoes? I got a pair of boots a year ago and I've loved them.
I put John Doe Shoes in the full article! stridewise.com/best-boots-under-300/ That said, post pandemic they've had trouble holding onto staff and I've heard the quality is just OK these days
Missing out on the solovair 6 eye derby! Nice lil cheap stitch down boot for very cheap
I put em in the full article! I couldn't put everything in this video or it'd be an hour long hehe
You have to look at Indian boots like Bridlen and BlkBrd. 150-300 for incredible quality construction.
Oh, just read the article where you mentioned bridlen lol
@@prospect_joe9813 Ooh thanks for actually reading it before condemning me for excluding them lol, Bridlen was a bit of a last minute addition, I would have liked to put them in the video. Next time!
SO many beautiful pairs of boots, and all in the uor at least oof them. I suppose their are o lot of foreign viewrs watching your channel and si i d like t make e recommendation. Since you do contact the brands you review and talk about, would there be a change to ask them if they have a shop located in europe so we europeans can oredr tax free boots, or any other of the goods you talk about. I could be a seperate video once in a while, like "top boot brands that you can aslo buy in europe" for example or just mention in the end of the video, if the company sells their produvts in europe(not ship, but sell in like a store). Thank you.
Братан у тебя самые крутые видео по моему любимому стилю! 👍😉
Also, I'm surprised people still recommend/buy Beckett Siminon. It's essentially a 100% MTO Business with 0 customizations and just ok QC and construction. There are many makers Asia (Indonesia, mainly) that have the same model but with customization and better construction.
I mean they're good looking, comfy, nice components, and under $200. I think they're very fine for what you're getting!
I think Lethato boots deserve it, specifically for those who have a boots collection. They are versatile but they are definitely a great piece to have to stand out from your other footwear brand because of their color contrast, style, design, and materials. Let me know your thoughts about the brand.
Damn... And again in Germany i can only dream of 90% of all these Boots from the Channel, Rose anvil, and so on.
We can get some Red Wings here ... Rest would have to be ordered and Importet and with fittings and sizing all over the place ... Its just to mutch of a risk..
I just recently bought two Thursday Captains. $300 for both pairs bought from Ebay, One rugged and the original Captains and debating on buying a pair of service boots from Canada West lol
One was used and other was brand new with a strong chemical smell
@@Kratos-bf2jg the smell goes away from wearing them which relaxes the leather for release, airing them out, cedar shoe / boot trees to absorb order. The more you move in them the faster the smell fades.
My wife has some of the matte black chelseas and the scent is nauseating. Guessing it's a combo of the dye and leather.
@@jeffloucks2120 to speed things along you might try giving them a good washing with saddle soap and let them dry in the sun, then apply some conditioner.
@@pattgsm Thanks for the saddle soap idea. Was wondering if that may make them a little blotchy as they seem so dye heavy. A quick light wash would probably be a good approach. She has worn them some last winter but they are definately a rotated item. She does keep cedar shoe trees in them.
i love my Urban Shepherded Scout boots
It's so funny how many people love that brand
@@Stridewise they are half the price of what i can get some Red Wings here, had them for 2 years, look great, feel great, patina great

I watched your video and I purchased 2 captains and a logger. I didn't see the Vanguard in your list nor the Loggers. They are the best boots under $300.
The Vanguard is first on this list!
You should do a video on boots under $500 to include Grant Stone, Cobbler’s Union, Huckberry, AE’s, J. Crew, Koio, Truman, etc,.
My opinion it’s better to just save a little more and buy a pair from Allen Edmonds. Never did my wrong . Grant stone also fire
Both terrific brands!

I was so excited to be there, a dream
You can get a pair of Shell Cordovan boots from Meermin for $350. I have no idea how they do that.
I know right, me neither
Very good video. I am researching Meermin now. I'm looking for a Chelsea full cut without breaking the bank.
Theyre good, but the hiro last is quite small so you should go 0.5 - 1 size up. Theyre pure torture to break in though, and their customer service is the worst you will ever experience. But if you get a good (non faulty) boot that fits its great.
Meermin'll do it!
@@TheFrontyer ah, so not hiring customer service people is where they save their money!
@@Stridewise For sure. I had to threathen with a lawsuit to have them follow EU legislation, which they violated. Also read many reviews that complained about the hassle with returning shoes if theyre faulty or wrong size.
But the boot themselves are great value, especially the wholecut chelseas.
Any tips on Urban Shepherd sizing?
Yeah my true size is an 11.5, and in these boots I’m a 13. But that was back when they were based in the US and using US sizes. I think it's best to ask them yourself
Hi!
Just shoot them a quick email and they help you right away.

I have a couple of loafers from Meermin and one pair of Chelsea boots.
Meermin are great value for money, the shoes have a tougher break in than some others.
The customer service isn't as good as some American brands, Europeans don't do customer service in the same way.
The shoes are quality!
Well, Meermin is outstanding with a very bad customer service in Europe.
Unfortunately, Adelante is $100 more expensive now, which pits them in the same tier as some Truman boots and other Made in the US boots. Their website says 4 weeks but the wait time is actually about 3 months right now.
damn it! i'll have to keep making new videos on this theme
Now we're talking.
Can you do a video on boots you can polish for under $300? I am beginning to realize that lots of boots are either oiled leather or chromexcel. Wonderful leathers with wonderful benefits, but I like to polish my boots and give them a mirror shine. It could be a good educational video on the different types of leather and why you can polish some and not others. Title: “Boots You Can Mirror Shine for Under $300”
Got thursday's they recommend going half size down and they're way too tight on me.
Interesting. Most find the recommendation of going 1/2 down from sneaker size to be too big. Remember that leather stretches once broken in. I had to go down a full size but 1.5 sizes from sneaker size fit like a pair of pre-broken in Iron Ranger. Order your dress shoe size and a half size down from that then decide which is the better fit.
I’ve had the same experience. I’ve never had to buy wide shoes but 1/2 down on Thursday was too tight in my toes.
I had the same experience. I returned my original pair that I ordered a half size down and went true to size and those fit nice. In fact I ended up getting a second pair because the burnt orange suede was just too nice looking to pass up!
Rocking with new phone…
I’d say for less than $300.00 my top 3 would be:
1: Red Wing factory seconds (when you can get them)
2: Thorogood Round Toe or Moc Toe
3: Thursday (if you can figure out the right size)
Glad to see all three on your list. Hope to see a Filson update soon Nick.

Instead of thorogood, why not carolina? They didn't increase their prices like danner or thorogood did
Carolina and Georgia Boots offer USA made boots, maybe Keen too. There is no reason to fixate on Thorogood.
Thorogood? That's a step down from a 1000mi heritage boot 🙄 and I think the Indonesian companies should have gotten an honorable mention since most are under $400, so if ur willing to spend $300 why not just spend the extra money and get a hand welted Indonesian made boot that's gonna be a significant improvement over the production boots on this list? Also, if people are really looking for budget options, they're gonna have to shop resale, Poshmark/eBay, factory seconds, handme downs, and reddit frugal men's fashion, as well as looking for sales. Just as an example, the JCrew Kenton with horween leather could be had for $80 including shipping, and the quality was pretty decent, and this sale happened multiple times if u missed out the first time.
I put Indonesian companies in the full article! Should have mentioned them in the video too though as an honorable mention, yeah. To be fair to your 'why not' question, a lot of people don't like the long wait, the inability to exchange, and the fact that most of them don't even have websites so they just feel dodgy haha
You all have a deal with THURSDAY BOOTS^^
paused @15 how many will be Thursday shills?
After a little over a year of watching your videos, I only got 1 big complain ! My friggin' bank account is suffering. I went from nikes and adidas tennis to over a dozen boots and just keep buying. Is boot wearing an addiction ? I now own 5 trumans 1 whites, 1 nicks, 1 thorogood, 1 wesco, 3 red wings, 3 allen edmonds, 3 grant stones and a couple more on order. Damn it that's way over a dozen
If you knew how many guys have angrily damned me for making them spend so much on boots XD glad you have found something you're passionate about though, Aldo!! And yes that's a lot more than a dozen
It's surprising that nobody has said anything about the Thursday boots being too narrow and dressy. How can a heritage style work boot enthusiast even like Thursday boots? I don't get it. The prices are good, but at least make one boot that's a bit bulky and bulbous. They're missing out on a big demographic of boot lovers here. 😣

Thursdays are the Sketchers of the boot world.
I mean when you think of beater boot Dr. Martens or Timberland was at the top but Thursday’s quality really put the stamp in why those brands are now a waste of $ if looking for affordability and better than decent quality.
@@pattgsm As far as Tim's and similar brands, I can't disagree with you. It's just something about them that bothers me. Different strokes I guess.
@@Unjust1 "an advertisement company that happens to sell shoes" haha that's great
@@Unjust1 Ok hot shot. What’s your recommendation for a GYW boot w, non- genuine leather for under $215? I’ll wait.
@@jamescooper7957 Yeah, I get that. I don’t think I’d ever wear Cowboy boots, logger boots or boots w/ Cuban heels. It’s not that any of those look bad or have utility, they just don’t resonate w/ me.
I would not recommend Oliver Cabell at all. Although I've never bought from them, the horror stories from Reddit have scared me away from that brand and really it makes no sense why CZcamsrs recommend them; it only hurts your credibility. Sure people are more likely to give negative reviews rather than positive, but how many negative reviews are there of brands like Parkhurst, Grant Stone, Alden, and Taft? Barely any at all, even though "people are more likely to give negative reviews."
I'm okay with even Meermin being on this list because there are as many great reviews of Meermin as bad reviews. But Oliver Cabell is just a no-go.
You know I actually had a line in the video where I said as much, that the customer service has a bad reputation, but I cut it because it felt mean. I guess I think that if the boot is $199 that the company's faults are in line with what you're paying, but you've given some food for thought
Why? Why? Why?
Are men shoes wayyyyy better looking than women. I LOVE handmade shoes. If any of these company's sell a small enough size to fit me (a female) I am going to buy🙌
