As many times as I've watched this movie, for some reason I never paid close attention to her acting in this scene, but if you do, you realize how good she is here. She really seems like a teenage girl putting her entire heart on the line. Gone is the tremendously polished, confident public face of an actress. Right then and there she is a nervous wreck, heart pounding in her chest, basically putting herself in his hands. It's really good stuff from Julia Roberts.
And showing how really ordinary deep inside she was or aiming to be. For a Hollywood actress, she looks like she could really be any lady working in that shop on a daily basis. No label tracksuit bottoms and fancy, expensive sunglasses on a day off, pretending to be common, but just a smart look-alike librarian with mousy, boring hair, showing how vulnerable and tired she was of all that fame. Good acting too, but her character is well composed, going from the hot-tempered actress, threatened by the eye of the press, to the calm and humble lady she wants to be by falling in love with him.
Well put. On seeing this scene again, I thought about her acting, too. Like when he asks her, "Can I say 'no'?" She smiles in a way that gathers together so many conflicting things inside.
@@davidthomas6094 Also when he speaks about her temper for a bit. Her micro expressions showed that she was afraid in that moment. Afraid of rejection because of that "temper".
Julia Roberts is actually wearing her own clothes here because the clothes brought to her by wardrobe Roberts said looked too costumey!
So in daily life, she apparently doesn't dress like a " star"!👍
Liked your comment. But I should also say Hugh Grant has equally played a wonderful role through the entire movie. He deserves accolades too isn’t it.
I miss this kind of cinematography. No background music, no distracting sounds, just plain dialogue and amazing acting.
“Don’t even think about it. Go away” same
That's one of the best lines in this movie.
I'd wish we'd say that more often to people interrupting moments.
@E To the customer who got in the way.
The Man is having a heart=to-heart and a damned customer pokes his nose in....
Should have said likewise to his mom as well.......IMO.
The way Julia Roberts delivers that line is unmatched. Perfect tone, with perfect pauses, just perfect acting.
And the teary eyes. Such emotion. You really feel it.
"The fame thing isn't really real you know". Gorgeous!
Some scenes are unforgettable, they never get old... like this one
Demi Moore's best performance I've seen, at least in the romantic comedy genre: vulnerable yet restrained and richly expressive. And without losing any of her captivating charm
And of course, I know perfectly well that it's Julia. But I just couldn't resist 😉
Loved her performance in Ghost. Wondered how Patrick Swayze was in real life
@@DANIELMartinez-iw7hj HA, HA / very good. But it reminds me of how wonderful the cast was. Even the assistant (forget his name) was just brilliant in the few scenes he had. The reference to Swayze is sad, but of course he was still alive at the time.
@@chrissnuggs Great movie, indeed
@@bianca164 I miss that guy! RIP PS!
Those are my favorite lines that Julia has ever spoken.
Amazing control as she keeps smiling as he starts to say no, but as he glances away, you see the dismay and sorrow on her face.
Best scene ever in a Rom-Com.
I agree!
wouldnt say this is rom com... more just rom
@@flacsmada naaaaa it is
her looks in this scene made her more beautiful. simple yet so charming
This is one of my favourite scenes in this film. I went through so many emotions but it did make me cry on her line 'im also just a girl, standing in front of a boy'. Such a fantastic film. Great cast and so many funny bits. It's a classic to me and I watch it every now and then.
I just watched this earlier and I agree.. I cried at this scene, Julia just nailed the emotions in it so hard
I need to watch this movie more times.
She’s in blue and he’s in pink…something about them wearing the opposite traditional gendered colors feels so potent. Excellent moment
Oh FFS. If thats what you get out of this scene then there are issues with you, big issues.
Oh FFS. If that's...oh, wait. You beat me to it Trinster.
It's not bad enough that people want to alter current reality. You have to time travel and try to muddle the simplest parts of the past. It's not enough to point out the wrongs done and learn. Today's "fighting" of sexysm and masogomy is about catapulting to the opposite extreme. Congrats. Great progress.
I like it, and never put it together until your comment. 😊🙏🏼👍🏽
traditionally we see many men play the role of asking for forgiveness and someone's love, so I think that the color switch was definitely purposeful because here the roles are reversed!
One of the best scene in cinema history!
There were a few in Notting Hill
The most powerful statement about love.
3:23 she probably new found respect for Will for telling her 'No' because so many people would just say 'Yes' without thinking about the fallout.
Two great actors at the top of their game and creating one of the greatest scenes in British movie history x
No matter how many times I watch this scene, it still gives me goosebumps..
He thought he'd never see her again.. and then POP, goes his heart
Lololololol
Oh, that's another film - it was very good - loved the girl in it, can't remember her name but she was well selected ... 👍
This movie is so charming and light-hearted.
Apparently this is based on a true story of the scriptwriter's friend.
The context of her character being an actress adds such power to an already poignant line. The whole world sees her as this idol, this object of fame and glory, which threatens her relationship with him because he fears that is what she wants to be and that, as an ordinary man, he couldn’t be enough for her and they’d both be left unfulfilled. But with this line, she assures him that she is a person like any other, and wants to love and be loved just like anybody else, more so than any meaningless fame or glory.
The way he immediately dismisses the guy who walks in at 0:22 will live in my soul forever.
Watch this over and over again... And my heart still hurt for her🥺
Mine too 🥺
She hurt him so many times though
Why for her? She strung him along for a year of his life.
@@rumblefish9 yes, I understand that to
@RideAcrossTheRiver that I understand to... just trying to see from both side
4:51 speaking from past experiences, jadednes, heartache and failures. You can see and hear it from Julia's eyes and delivery. Very masterful way of doing it. Anna probably never had people liking her for the person, they probably liked her for the fame, beauty and recognition, but never for the vulnerable personality. She even said that when she referenced Rita Hayworth's Gilda's sleeping with the dream and waking up to reality.
But also on the other side, Will was right to reject her because he fears for the consequences. His previous wife left him for someone else, he got 2 rude awakenings with Anna as well. A third one would have probably finished him off.
Self-preservation for sure!
what a handsome, handsome man !😍😍😍😍😍
The last look of the rebuffed customer through the window! Brilliant touch. Hahaha.
bob: Yes, I had this on DVD and watched it a lot - you miss so much by watching a film just once and every time you watch you see something new, like that backward look ... 👌
Love this scene when she says exactly how she is feeling '' I am just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her''
" I'm a fairly 'level-headed' 'bloke' " 3:01. Watching and learning new expressions.
British boi tingz
I love this... and for anyone who's felt or dealt with some fame... she's right... the "fame" isn't real or everlasting...at the end of the day, people are just people.. just humans
I'm also just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her...
QE ornotQE you seem happy asf...
Are you hot? 🤷🏻♂️
@QE ornotQE lmao. Bit salty arent ya mate
Yes. Thanks. Thanks for repeating THE line.
that is honestly the simple but most beautiful line in a film, EVER!
Just chokes me up
This has got to be the sweetest five minutes of film over produced ... watching Julia try to fight back tears as her heart is broken. My goodness what a beautiful actress !
Also, the indefinitely at the presser. You see the giddiness roll up from within her. It was like 2 or 3 waves and culminated with that brilliant grin!
It’s fun to spend a few minutes with others here who loved that scene.
Memorable and iconic line at 4:45 Very classic
Don't even think about it, go away immediately! Go away. LMAOOOOOO XD
And still.... The best romantic comedy movie to me ever...
Love it more as l see it again and again ❤
Absolutly...
One of the best scenes from Notting Hill- super connection! Movie end was good.
One of my all time great movies. Whenever I watch this movie i feel so calm and not rushed through a story . I hope I am not the only one
Handsome lad ever! Blue got its beauty by being ur eyes Hugh!
Watch Paul Newman in "The Sting" if you are into Blue Eyes like mine and Paul's :)
@@Isleofskye Hugh Grant has nothing on Paul Newman 😊
Hugh is so charming gosh
An awesome and legendary movie. Hope to see them act together again in future.
They are all old now. They can act well but maybe not much attractive.

'Ghost was the most wonderful film' 😅 i am still laughing and i watched it a thousand times.
I watched this then noticed something so watched a few more times. OMG That lady can Act
It is an excellent movie. The ability to alternate The last brownie chat between pathos and laughter is an extraordinary dialogue writing ability.
Love this movie and the scene 💕 I want a star to tell me “I'm also just a boy, standing in front of a girl , asking her to love him.”
I absolutely love this little, simple, endearing movie...from the first time I watched it.
Many critics dislike it but it really has some of the best acted scenes I've ever seen. The storyline - The utter acceptance and support from true friends who recognize your flaws and love you nonetheless - really hard to find. ❣❤💜💔💘💟
I only really appreciated how brilliant it was n a second viewing some years later. It is now a film I can watch again and again.
The writing here, although unrealistic, is tremendously entertaining. One of the best lines in cinema history.
Makes me cry everytime..
Masterfully done. Both saying what they had in mind from their experiences from the past 2 incidents and then delivering the lines where you feel all the emotions.
Young Julia Roberts was so beautiful
She still is! 1000 watt smile!
Was
Is still beautiful
4:50 tear drop rolls down
I love His character in this movie what a paceful Man
Watched this movie for the first time yesterday and I cant get this brilliant scene out of my head. Julia Roberts' acting is mind blowing here. I can feel the pain here.
Great scene in one of the best movies never get bored of it! Perfect acting perfect pauses just pure dialogue. Never get bored watching it
Stanislavski would be blown away. . . . My god, she can act . . .
when i hear the line “im just a girl standing infront of a boy....”, i immediately think of harry styles with james corden in the car
That’s the only reason I’m here
same 🙋🏽♀️
Is this the scene where he says "you had me at hello" ?
I've give everyone a moment to think about what I did there.
SAME
Who's still watching this amidst covid 19 pandemic?
me
@@samlucas7493 I love the line I am just a boy standing infront of a woman waiting for her to love me ha ha
Fuck covid, "plandemic"
I'm working, since March. I'm resting at lunch break. In Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. I respect the pain of the affect families, but the pandemic is over. Just the red enemis don't accept it...
Watching this movie to compensate for not being able to date during the pandemic.
its so great the movie takes the time to let this scene work. it needs time to develop the full range of emotions it wants to show.
Always enjoyed this movie. Tear jerker at times. 👍👍
First of all, really great script by Richard Curtis. Then masterful casting of all, particularly the two stars at their peak. Julia Roberts performance here is exceptional, an acting class. By turns, confident, warm, funny, angry, and then extremely, believably, vulnerable; with micro expressions throughout the film that make her emotions all the more believable and relatable. And then that radiant Julia Roberts smile comes bursting through. To die for. Not to mention, Hugh Grant delivered his lines perfectly and believably also, with warm humor, great timing, and his usual charm. This particular scene has one of the greatest, most memorable lines in film of course. All the rest of the cast, and creators, did their "jobs" well too in orchestrating this brilliantly charming movie.
One of my favourite lines of all time 🙌
I really love this movie I've been watch it a hundred times ..love you queen Julia!
The ghost part cracks me up every time 😂😂😂
These two had a great decade in the 90s ....
Top ten greatest scene in the history of film.
Oh Mann!!...wie das schön war diese stille und Ruhe......
Martin's ( James Dreyfus) acting in this scene is superb. His portrayal of the character truly stands out and leaves a lasting impression. Despite having a small role, he delivers a fantastic performance, and his comedic timing adds an extra layer of enjoyment.
I could cry every time I watch this scene but in the end they’re happy 🥹🫶🏻
The most honest words a human can say.
2022 and still looking for a girl to talk to me in the way Anna does ...
Beat scene ever.
Wow. I’ve never seen this movie. Came here because I saw that the building that the bookstore is in is for sale and the article mentioned the iconic scene from the film. Who knew? Everyone but me it seems:). I’ll watch it!!
Best love scene ever
Classic and iconic! This scene is a masterpiece indeed ❤️

Wow. The simplicity of this scene is everything
I love this scene. Amazing!
One of my favorite scene. 😍 I love Julia Roberts🙂
Simply the best, loved to watch always.
Iconic and Julia acting is amazing in this😭😭😭
I'm not a romcom guy, and thought the dialog and plot were forced, but I love this movie. Hugh Grant was never pathetic, and Julia Roberts was believable as a confused beautiful woman.
For me the best movie I have seen, now would be a good time to do it again together, after the years, as I say, for me a work of art.
At this moment, with her laying her heart out like this, I would have done anything for her. Anything.
Best scene, best acting, best actress 🥰
I just love this part
Heartbreaking scene.
Remember this movie is from the pre-social media era.
Emotion had more value than today. Because people those days enjoyed real-world experience than fake virtual world exposure.
You really nailed it.
really perfect ...love it many many times
Czy ktokolwiek więcej romantycznego nikt nie widział....?
Has anyone ever seen anything more romantic??!!!
Julia Roberts needs to make a comeback.
I wish I could have had the happy ending they had. I was also just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her... we parted ways never to speak to each other again💔💔💔
Tulips Forever Very. Goodness. Happens. Bye

@@aimeeahearne6898 My ex was the love of my life. We met when we were 13 and 14 and we've been in love ever since but out relationship used to be very crazy. We were separating and getting back together a few times. Month ago we had an argue and we stopped talking with each other. Since then i literally feel nothing. I can't even cry i can't be angry. I'm so sorry but it will get better. Try to do something that makes you happy. Think about your hobbies maybe meet up with friends. You're too good to be sad. Live life. I know that it might be hard but don't bring yourself down. You're too good for that. I wish you the best.
I wish upon a falling star, someone makes your wish come true too.....until then, hold tight!
