  • There's no doubt the Ford Barra six cylinder has been a popular engine conversion choice for older Fords. It's refreshing to see Dave's modified turbocharged Fairmont Ghia ESP still retains the factory 250 Crossflow engine. We got a closer look at it whilst it was being dyno tuned by Ford specialist Tunnel Vision.

Back in the 90s, there was a guy in Adelaide that had a red TD XLE Cortina with a 250 crossflow, 4 barrel from memory, and a big NOS kit, with a 2.75 9", he use to pull the front right wheel to almost 1/2 track, and ran constant mid to high 10s. Yes it was a street car.....No bad for the old days. Don't know what ever happened to them, but with all the dramas of AIR etc, I haven't been out there for 20 years myself.

Not only the same big end size pretty much the same con rod with the same tiny 5/16 bolts. Many years ago I fitted small end bushes to 30 + sets of proto type BA turbo rods for Ford to test. As far as I know that was the only change they made from n a to turbo rods.

Owned cars with that engine (TE Cortina, XD Fairmont Ghia, XF Falcon) for 24 years until 8 years ago. Supposedly the main cause of low redline is a bad rod length to stroke ratio, someone was "working" on a solution but don't know if anything was ever released (I guess it might have been a destroker kit?). Improvement could be had with roller-rockers.
That door handle - when you have 3/4 movement with nothing then that sort of noise right at the end - generally means it's not long until it's going to go. Internals on the latch were another failure point, from memory you could have just the spring go and be up for $25+ for an entire new mechanism and 90 minutes to put a new one in.

"you don;t build this thing to make power" - ~370 kw at the hubs is pretty stout for a street car, more than enough turn to burn tyres with ease in any of the first few forward gears, no?

The Falcon 6 goes back to the first US Falcon. It became crossflow in 76 to clean up emmisions.
As for rpm,,,, speedway Modified Sedans have been turing 6500 plus for decades with stock crank and rods. And factory intakes as well.
The base architecture for the ohh aah Barra is a 250 Falcon motor.

What is considered the crossflow? Is it the 4.1 that came in the XE/XF, the 3.9 that came in the EA or the 4.0 that came in the EB/ED? I keep on getting confused

You only need the head , it will bolt to any 144.170.188.221.200 or 250 ford six , ring an Aussie wrecking yard they got plenty of good ones $ 250 Aussie max and $150 to freight to US , they use all Cleveland V8 2V valves, springs, rockers so parts in US easy to find .
