    About the Kuroo part of him not inviting him to play soccer is because he knew Kenma wasn't interested in physical activities and he wouldn't like to go out to play soccer and he assured his dad that even tho Kenma is an introvert that doesn't go out as much, he still have things he DOES enjoy and he dedicates himself to those things so his dad shouldn't worry about him being "apathetic" towards life. It's a sign of respect. Kuroo respects the fact that Kenma needs his down time, and he'll invite him to things he things he'll like, and if he says he doesn't want to, then he won't pressure him. Kenma showed interest in Volleyball, so he took him there. And even the first time they went, he didn't force him to participate. He just watched.

      This. Also, later in the flashback when Kenma calls Kuroo a liar, it's when Kuroo says "You'd be a good setter! They are the brains and you wouldn't have to move very much!" At the time Kenma realized later that the "not having to move very much as a setter" was a complete lie.

    I love haikyuu so much. I think its one of my all time favorite animes. I'm not a sporty person, never have been. I enjoyed hanging out with my friends but was never into the sport we were playing (wether that was tennis, basketball, or rugby). I super unhealthy as I've kinda been housebound by anxiety. My friend convinced me to watch this anime about volleyball and I was hesitant at first cause I knew nothing about the sport, or sports in general but then you watch it and a lot of the time its less about the sport and more about the love of the sport if that makes sense. Its more about a passion for something and holding onto that feeling for as long as possible. The ups and downs of the show and the characters developing new ways of dealing with their downfalls is so inspireing. So much so that despite literally only being out once in like 3 years (not even stepping a foot out the door) I had to watch the show in the cinema when my friend asked.
    Not only that but I decided I want to re-join a volleyball club (I had been in one when we first watched the anime but I stopped going due to anxiety). Had the first session a few days ago and can't wait to go again. I want to get better with each session.
    When we were at school we only had a female volleyball club (there was a mixed one but you'd get bullied really bad for playing, plus I was put in the all-boys class so we never actually played it unless it was a time when we didn't have enough pe-teachers so we had to play with the mixed group). Which is such a shame cause I really love the sport. I loved basket ball for the team-play and the feeling of shooting a basket but I hated the contact nature of the sport (especially being bullied you tend to get marked a whole lot more which was just an excuse to bump into you and push you) and I really liked tennis having to smash the ball ever the net so it only seemed natural that volleyball was a great fit for me.
    TL:DR: Haikuu is a great anime for fans of volleyball but its also for people who are a fan of character progression. It's an ispirational show about overcoming overwhelming odds and dealing with losses and how to turn losses into a strength.

    loved watching your vlog. Super glad you got to see it in theaters and we got to see some of your reactions to some big moments! I ended up seeing this in theaters twice because I was so excited after the first viewing. There a few interpretations of your I disagree with/have a different take on.
    1. Kuroo and the soccer scene. I didn’t see it as Kuroo lying. But him saying to Kenma’s dad: “I won’t invite Kenma to play soccer because I don’t think he’d have fun.” The subtext implied by that is Kuroo thinks “I am going to keep inviting Kenna to play volleyball because I think he does have fun playing volleyball”.
    1a. Also I think Kenma calling Kuroo a lier was mostly adult Kenma commenting on how young Kuroo said, “You should be a setter, then you won’t have to move that much”. Which adult Kenma feels is/was a lie. Which Kenma is arguably right to think.
    2. as for Kenma getting upset when he was stopping Hinata from getting spikes. I do think a part of him being upset was that he didn’t like doing it to his friend. But I think a bigger part of it was that in Kenma’s eyes, he had won at the point. He “solved” the enigma that was Hinata. In a scene around then we get a flashback of Kenma saying, “I don’t like beating a game more than I don’t like dying a bunch” (I’m going to quote from memory so it’ll be slightly off). This implies to me that Kenma likes a challenge. Kenma is fascinated by Hinata because he always seems to evolve and overcome a challenge, making Hinata the ultimate challenge. And so in the match, when Kenma’s plan is working, Hinata isn’t evolving, and so Kenma ‘beat the game’, to him all the challenge is gone. It’s after Kageyama does the super high set and Hinata “evolves” and does the boom jump, that Kenma suddenly is invested and interested again.
    But interpretations of those moments aside, super glad you enjoyed the movies. Your reaction series was a major contributing reason for me playing volleyball now for the last year and a half, so cheers!

      @@ElevateYourselfOfficial About the Kuro scene, remember Kenma doesn't like to move too much, he rather stay still, play and move when he needs to. That's why Kuro told him he should be a setter, he likes to think rationally and not moving too much. That's how Nekoma works too, Kenma's the brain, the body has to move and flow as the brain thinks how to move and what to do. So, Kuro, knowing that, knows that Kenma wouldn't enjoy soccer as he should be running and moving way too much, making him tired and not enjoying the game.

    Hey! Love your reaction. I was on the same page of not expecting to be as involved and enjoying of Kenmas backstory.
    One thing I noticed is that you mentioned that Kuroo didn't invite Kenma to play soccer, etc. He didn't lie, or not include him out of spite/skills, but rather he didn't want to invite Kenma to something that Kenma himself didn't want to go to. He knows that Kenma would not enjoy the experience, and knew that if he wanted to go, he would absolutely invite him.

  • @jakeDgirl
    @jakeDgirl Před 19 dny +8

    The way they chose to adapt this arc is through Kenma's POV, and for that decision, they've delivered quite well. However the downside is that we don't see the perspective from anyone else. 12:20 Yes in the manga it's confirmed that Hinata 1st tried to tip it down, but saw Kenma moving forward. So Hinata changed the tip last second to target the back court. It's a move he learned in the Tsukibahara match, the 1st match Karasuno had in Nationals.
    Hinata grew a lot in Garbage Dump but we hear none of his inner thoughts and decisions, especially when Kenma was trying to cage him in. Hinata tried to escape multiple times all with his own thinking, not Kageyama's or the coach's, thus showing his evolved game IQ.
    He also failed the 1st Boom Jump; they couldn't match up perfectly the 1st time Kageyama gave him an open toss, and both Hinata & Kageyama had to adjust to the new play. It threw Kenma off for awhile because he was starting to overthink "What's Kageyama thinking? Hinata CAN'T jump that high, right? Even if he does, he's going to be on even height with our 3 tall blockers, so what's the point?" But when Hinata does succeed the Boom Jump, even if it seemed like he's gonna get caught by the 3 blockers, Hinata could target their fingertips or open spaces between them, or ricochet off them, etc; thus using the blockers heights to his advantage. My favorite part is Kenma exclaiming "That's a demon and demon right there!" in contrast to how Coach Nekomata explained the freak duo in S1 [paraphrased]: "Kageyama is the demon, Hinata is just the demon's club. And we can take away the club."
    A lot of other players had their growth/time to shine in this match too like Asahi, Yamaguchi, Tora, Fukunaga, Nishinoya, Yaku. I saw their moments animated, but anime-only fans didn't understand why those few seconds were significant because they went by so fast, and we don't hear why those moments were important to the players. :( I hope anime-only fans do try to read the manga, because you have missed SO MUCH substantial chunk.

      THISSS, I really loved Kenma's POV but I won't lie, the whole time I was actually waiting for Hinata's POV as well. I badly wanted to see his thought process on how he broke free from the strategies thrown by Kenma to stop him. That was my biggest disappointment on this movie... I missed Hinata so much too🤧

    • @jakeDgirl
      @jakeDgirl Před 18 dny

      @@ace_4311 It also removes any impression of hard-earned growth for Hinata. Although he did run into obstacles and overcame them, it felt fleeting (?, at least for me) because we don't hear his thoughts and how he wanted to overcome them. Then the ultimate solution, the boom jump, was initiated by Kageyama. If anime-only fans saw it, maybe they have the impression that Kageyama is once again the main force behind the duo; missing out how much strategizing Hinata did on his own throughout this game.

  • @pollys6192
    @pollys6192 Před 18 dny +10

    Apart from everything you said coach, which I agree 100%, I'd like to point out that this movie showed something that maybe many people has missed because of all the story with Kenma, Kuroo and Hinata, which was incredibly exciting. I'd like to single out one detail of the movie that is incredibly important for us and it is the moment that sealed the friendship between Hinata and Kageyama. Throughout the anime we've always heard Hinata telling Kageyama over and over again that whenever, wherever and however fast he sets the ball he will be there to hit it, he will be there for Kageyama, a boy who is traumatised by lonelines and by the last year at his middle school (the whole King of the court arc). In Kenma's mind, given what he has witnessed (not us, Kenma, this is important) he thinks that Kageyama will ignore Hinata if he thinks he's not key to win the match (something that he said in the first season) and also according to Kenma, Hinata and Kageyama as people (not as players) are always fighting. So when he metaphorically puts Hinata in a cage, he is convince that Kageyama will ignore Hinata. What happens and I think this is key to win the match, is that Kageyama sets a ball high enough, long enough, and slow enough, to give Hinata time and space to stand up, free himself, run and fly like a crow and hit the ball. Actually, my reading of this scene is that Kageyama is proving everyone that he will be there for Hinata too, he trusts him with his life (his life is volleyball) and two people who come from lonely places will never be alone. They are friends for ever.
    Sorry for the rant coach, I've enjoyed your reactions to Haikyuu over the years and learnt from them too. Thank you so so much.

    You'd Definitely want to read the manga for this - even if it's not for a reaction but just on your own time, I strongly recommend it. The anime team did a wonderful job with the limits that they had, but a bunch of stuff couldn't make it into the movie, including but not limited to the origins of Hinata's long tip (a slight "spoiler" from the past: that's something Hinata got an idea for a couple games earlier at Nationals), and I feel like you'd enjoy delving into the volleyball stuff deeper, which the manga thankfully does.
    Regarding Ukai's words to Kageyama - "confident" is, imo, definitely not quite the correct word to use there. Ukai told Kageyama to be brave, and while it's not mentioned in the movie, in the manga we at least have Suga thinking about how brave it is for Kageyama to let go of his previous obsession with speed and, essentially, trust Hinata to handle it, so you still got a good read of the situation. Kageyama used to try to handle everything on his own, and so trusting others in that case does take courage.

    I just saw it yesterday and while it did feel very short and quick-paced since it was a movie, the animation quality, the sounds of the ball being hit in the theater, and Kenma's perspective was AMAZING.
    I hope that they see the success and are able to have the next movie be at least 2 hours!!!

    I love what you said in the end. I'm 36, I've been playing Volleyball for nearly 20 years. I can no longer compete in a collegial level, but I still play competitively locally and recreationally. If you have that passion, you will definitely still experience those moments these teams get, and boy, when you get those moments, it still feels just as great as it did for me 10 years ago.
    As for the movie, I know some were not all that satisfied with it. But I think to fully enjoy the movie, you have to set a certain expectation for this one. Don't expect a big narrative. I already kind of knew this, so I came in feeling like I paid a ticket to watch an actual volleyball match with some backstory. And boy did that make this a ton of fun to watch.

    Glad to see you enjoyed the movie, Coach!! I went with my boyfriend the first time, and alone the second time (already planning to see it twice more with friends), and I cried both times I did watch it 😂 Nekoma is my favourite Haikyuu team, and Kuroo and Kenma my favourite childhood friends pair out of the others we have in Haikyuu, so I was beyond happy to see their backstory so lovingly played out for us on the screen. I could have watched another hour and a half of this movie just to see more of the KaraNeko interactions from the manga that unfortunately didn't make the cut into the movie. In my opinion Nekoma really are Karasuno's closest and truest friends, and their favourite rivals. I'm so happy the movie let us see that bond of mutual respect and competition between them.

    my comment got shown! glad you enjoyed the movie. I was just as hype watching it in theaters, and good to see i'm not the only one trying to hold in cheers.
    I don't think kuro was lying to kenma during that part. i just think that he doesnt want to necessarily force him to play a sport just because his dad thinks he needs more exercise. but volleyball is Kuro's passion and he just wanted to share that with his best friend, at first just asking kenma to help him practice then recognizing that kenma is a thinker and that setter would probably be something he liked. although Kuro did lie that setters dont move that much, but i think thats just his young naivety comparing it to spiking. I think Kenma took that interaction as Kuro really knowing him and sticking up for him, which is why theyre so close even though you'd think theyre not really compatable personalities

    I loved getting to see your initial reactions to the movie, and I’d love to see you react to Karasuno vs Nekoma in the manga because the movie cut out some great scenes.
    After I got into Haikyuu, I almost took a season off of running to try playing volleyball, but I ultimately didn’t because I felt like it would be more in line with the themes of the story to go all in on becoming the best runner I could be. I still play volleyball recreationally whenever I can, but I’m now gearing up to race my first marathon.
    After watching Chihayafuru (an anime that I really hope you react to someday), I got way more hooked on competitive karuta. During my first tournament, I had a moment like Tsuki or Hinata when I became that much more hooked, and I’ll soon be going to Japan to play a lot more of it.
    Time to spend some time practicing karuta and then go for a run.

    You misunderstand that scene. Kenma's father wants Kuroo to bring Kenma along to play other sports like soccer but Kuroo understands Kenma does not like tiring himself. Kuroo will gladly have Kenma join him in anything if Kenma wants to and will not force Kenma to do what he does not want to. Kuroo was telling Kenma's father that when Kenma wants and chooses to do something, he will gladly invite him as he knows Kenma would 100% be devoted and put his all into it.

    Unfortunately, due to the low runtime of the movie they had to cut out a lot of great moments from the manga.
    I'd greatly recommend checking out that part of the manga, just because you do unfortunately miss a lot of exposition and plays that really underline this match being a kind of full circle moment for both teams.

    Kenma wasn't feeling bad because he was beating Hinata and tearing his wings off. Kenma was sad that after locking him down, Hinata wasn't interesting anymore, like when they dd the flashback of him saying he felt worse when he beat a game then when he loses at it. That's why he came alive when Kageyama and Hinata figured out how to overcome his strategy.

Ive played 3 years on PE in school but nothing serious, do you think if i put in a LOT of work (like 3hrs daily) and train like crazy, i have a chance of going pro? and play in like 3rd league or smth? (in september im joining a recreational practise 2x a week as well)

    Props to the staff at Production IG for how well they adapted this match. I would've preferred a whole cour of episodes to properly adapt the match. However, it hit the major beats even if it sacrificed some great moments and backstory elements. Overall an 8.5 to 9/10 for me. Hope the next film isn't the last cuz we still got way too much left to see the story through to the end.

    How are you enjoying the Volleyball rally animations this time? I've noticed we got a lot more seamless full court view of whole rallies instead of play-by-play (digging, camera switch to setting, to hitting, etc). I think they're fantastic!
