Making Beaver Fur Mittens???

  • With the 51st Annual Salmon Horse and Mule Sale coming up fast, I thought I'd better start making a few things. Years ago, I made a pair of mittens for a guy out of a couple of skunks. They turned out pretty neat, so I decided to make a pair out of Beaver.......well.....I had some technical difficulties!
Now if only I can find a right handed trapper with one arm....
    Enjoy!

@@MuskratOutdoors Even with mittens, I have bunch of knitted and leather types that are fitted with the moveable fore finger for gun trigger freedom. But as ImixSpb has said, I figure it's the best thing to keep your hands warm. Great for riding snowmobile across open ground or a pond or lake where it's open to a frost bite wind (been frostbitten countless times on the coast of Labrador). Some are large enough to allow a ight pair of cotton gloves inside for use with the mitts off for quick use off and on.

Well thank you MO. I especially love that tune you used for the intro and the whole background music throughout. I watched the first time while folding a load o' laundry (I was late getting to your video today) and then again with a coffee and a smoke. Loved it. The skill and technique are fascinating.
In the ate 70's when I tended a trapline, my Inuit wife's Inuit aunt made beaver skin mitts and hat for me several times over those years. They were the best and not much dissimilar from yours, if at all. I'd be interested in knowing, once you've finished, whether I might be able to purchase them but we'll see. I've not bought anything online so we'll see; it may not be worth it on your end, compared to if you sold them from your display booth.
Thanks again and I just hope and pray that you and Cindy remain well and continue to be blessed as you both work to maintain your lifestyle and have us along at the same time. Seems like a tall order for anyone living in the convenience of urban life let alone the way your life demands a daily schedule many of us would never manage to keep up.

They are harder that it seems they should be. I would like to make some gloves....I tried once....they ain't easy! Mittens are just a thumb and one big finger. I don't make many headstalls anymore, but chaps, saddlebags, things like that. I've made a lot of saddles too, but they take so much time and money to make, it's hard to come out very good on them.

@MuskratOutdoors yes sir. I once had the dream of making saddles myself. I even had an opportunity to take over a cobbler/saddle shop in Northern Wyoming about 20 years ago. I would have enjoyed the work, but I could tell the customer base was shrinking back then. Luckily, it's strong again from what I've seen. Saddles are a big investment on both sides. I think the smaller items are where it's at honestly? Maybe a guy could take orders for belts and purses at the sale...that is if you want to. You're a good hand Mr Gary. Strong work friend.

Beef scraps are legal and work really well not much work to cover them up so gut birds don't eat them all. Once the woof get fed good they come back. Stay around for a couple days till get it ate.
