    Never in a million years I would have thought that a 30 wpc @ 8 ohms amp would be able to drive such large speakers with ease & lots of power. Great video. 👍👍👍👍

    in about 1980 I went to a stereo store Intending on buying one or the other of these after listening to them side buy side, was about to get the JBLs when the lady there turned on a pair of Wharfedale E70s. I paid double for them but it was well worth it. To this day still the best speakers I have ever heard

    Vintage JBL L100 are more efficient speakers that's why they already sound good with a little power. HPM100 sound kinda muffled and power hungry because they're 100-200W, and fun fact: if your HPM100 port has a silver trim ring, it means that HPM100 is a 200W speaker, and I see the fair comparison to the modern JBL L100 Classic because it has the same 200W RMS.

      I feel the JBL sound better than the Pioneers honestly. Maybe this is why? But the JBL won with every receiver we tried hooking them up to

    Your system sounds great, IMHO, the vintage sound is hard to beat ! My current setup is 2 pairs of HPM-100s, stacked, and wired in parallel, spaced about 9 feet apart, and 2 feet from side & back walls. Toed-in slightly toward the center of the room. These are powered by one of the following (all are in rotation in my listening room): Pioneer SX-1250 (restored, tested @ 194 wpc), Carver M500t amp (250 wpc), or a Luxman R117 receiver (under-rated @ 165 wpc). The soundstage is enormous, and can be driven to near-concert levels without noticeable distortion. I love doing first-time demos for people, and watching their jaws drop when I crank up some Dire Straits "Brothers In Arms".
    Rock on, Gentlemen !

    I think you're right about Pioneer. Receivers matching better with the h. PM 100 I have ASX750 and it does great with my H. PM one hundreds.

    I have both L100 and HPM100
    I love them both, each has its own way of sounding.
    I favor more on the L100 because the Pioneers bass gets a bit boomy at high volume but I find the HPM's to have a bit better highs

    That’s a really nice stereo setup they make some ok stuff nowadays and I’ve tried plenty of them but keep going back to the old vintage hifi. It just sounds better to me.

    In my opinion Black Cow sounded the same a bit more bassy in HPM all in all it's a close shot. I think the best way to compare speakers is to listen to it in the same shot thru a switch back and forth. The sound signature stamped in our memory from one session to another seems to get mixed up while we are replacing the units. Both pairs are sounding excellent.

    Sounds really well, love my HPM's 100w and 200w version, both are identical besides the silver ring on the 200w version, I don't own the L100, but I do the 4312A and the L96, believe it or not I'll take the L96 any time any day

  • @BostonMike68
    @BostonMike68 Před 6 měsíci +1

    The speaker designer that designed the L 100 was hired from Pioneer to design the hpm line after the success of the JBL. I have a pair of hmp 100 that is in storage I don't use them because I honestly with the new speaker technology I have designed better sounding speakers than those. I was planning on re designing the crossover because on the mid band crossover it just has a low pass filter and rolls of on its on I want to have it roll off at 3000 Hz so it doesn't lob over with the tweeter and then I would end up replacing the tweeter and I would have to brace the inside of the cabinet because they didn't use bracing back then relimanate the cabinets and after all that I might as well just just design a new speaker. They didn't have the software for designing crossovers and cabinets that we do today and the driver technology has gotten much better.

    I know we are depending on a lot of horrible methods to make a judgement, but that said, the JBL seem to be lacking midrange clarity

    • @rockrollhi-figuy6824
      @rockrollhi-figuy6824  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Possibly so, i wish i had more time to compare them with different amps and sources. Both speakers sounded great for the age and being in unrestored condition. Sometimes i wish i could blindfold myself and a/b them, because i am definitely partial to JBL.

      Funny you should say that. Russ and I have done several comparisons with the L100 Centuries, and my impression was always that the L100s sounded like somebody drew a smilie face with an equalizer, which implies less midrange. Now, the L100 Classics are another story entirely! The only thing in common with the L100 Centuries is the model number and Quadrex foam grille

    the highs pretty much disappeared when you put them orange grilles on the l100s!..what cloth is that?..and is the original black mesh still inside the frames?..if so remove that its not needed for cloth inserts..the l100 grilles are cool but that step back design sets the tweeters back in so far with edges surround it..those edges cause diffraction of the highs..i think the grille frames themselves hurt the high frequencies even without foam or cloth in them

      @rockrollhi-figuy6824  Před 9 měsíci

      Thats my buddy Kens set up (the smart ass in the back lol) hes getting the fancy quadraflex grilles for them. I agree, theyre not as good with the covers on. He bought them off of marketplace like that. I think those were home made.

    I have my L100's hooked to my Sansui 7070. Pretty incredible. When more volume (or bass) is needed,
    I use my Pioneer CS-C9900 (15's) with my Scott 380R (80W).
    Sansui sits atop Scott and I use "Y" rca adapters to run them together.
