    The Ratchet and Clank Trilogy proved to be a massive success, but like many franchises, Insomniac struggled with 'The Fourth Game Problem' where it's difficult to decide where to take a series next after it, seemingly has done it all. The end result being Ratchet Deadlocked, released on the Playstation 2 in 2005. Let's see how it turned out!

    24:37 I'd say Captain Qwark gets the perfect placement and amount of time in Deadlocked/Gladiator. His lack of kidnapping suggests even the Vox network sees how inauthentic he is. His relegation to voiceover only at the very end matches how inconsequential he ought to be.

      I wholeheartedly agree. That cameo was just right. And they should have dropped Qwark right then and there entirely. Jim Ward is a great VA and could have had a spot as any other type of new character in the future series onward to keep that personality and comic relief present in the games instead of shoehorning Qwark into everything as though he should be forgiven for working with a galactic tyrant bent on ending the lives of trillions as well as probably killing many people of his own accord with the whole Protopet business. When you think about it, Qwark should be tried and executed

    7:04 The only problem I had with the face-covering armor suits was that they covered Ratchet's face during cutscenes. In Ratchet Deadlocked, the helmet comes off for cutscenes, and goes on for combat, so it's fine. The full-face covering communicates a sense of greater danger, so it's good in this darker, more combat-focused game.

      I think their reasoning is almost entirely due to diminishing returns financially, which is really bizarre because even at the time that was a notoriously spotty metric for quality, and one would think a studio with their consistent track record of quality would know better. I think the lackluster sales for deadlocked are the fault of it being marketed as a spin off more than anything, if it was marketed as Ratchet and Clank 4 it would have sold comparably to Up Your Arsenal since it's basically the same thing but arguably better.

It started out as a platformer, then became more combat focused with 2 adding strafing and less platforming and 3 adding wave defence zones. Honestly this imo is the best game out of the older PS2 generation , in terms of story , stake , characters and base plot along side with the best Gameplay the Franchise has used. If anything I hope that this game would get a remaster or a remake just to add more variety in challenges , optional content and more indepth enemy veriety. A shame seeing Insomniac views this game a failure , and we will never see this type of Games from them nor' any acknowledgement in future titles :(
    But overall I say this game still to this date is one of the most fun games one can play. And is worth a playthrough if anything.

    I actually never got why people said this games tone was darker. Like you said, it falls in line pretty well with the rest of the series and the writing is just about where it was in the previous games.

    I actually kinda have one gripe about Deadlocked and it's that you get the weapons too quickly. I already have the Arbiter and I unlocked the ability to purchase it before the Avenger Tournament. I kinda thought the weapons would've been a bit more spread out instead of gaining the ability to purchase them immediately on the next planet.

    I love when these games have a good melee weapon and man this one is the best. it can even hit flippin flying enemies if you have enough area mods.
    One thing about coop i do know tho is that you only die if both players die within i think 30 sec of eachother, maybe less.

    This is totally off topic, but when I first played this game, Ratchet got zapped by nothing after glitching out of bounds in the very first training section (specifically in a hallway right before you had to do some platforming challenge across hazardous ground).
    When I somehow glitched though the wall and walked around outside for a bit, and shortly after got zapped, I remembered the cutscene that had just played, saying something to the likes of, "if you venture into any restricted zone, the collar will produce a deadly shock". I assumed at the time that this was what happened, that it was an legitimate feature, and was a means of combating out of bounds glitches, and I silently praised the devs creativity and attention to detail.
    Of course, I've never been able to reproduce this, so that can't be the case, but that memory has always stuck around ,and it helped the game make a heck of a first impression. I'm curious if anybody else has encountered something like this?

    I finish this game (3 times !) recently, and I really loved it.
    The menu, the music, the ambiance, everything was really cool for me.
    I found it more difficult, because it's a "real" TPS, because you have to lock with your analog.
    Try to make it in the highest difficulty, without the option to "pause" the game when you change your weapons, it really makes it more difficult and cool !

    Interesting to hear about the 4th game problem 🙂 I was thinking about that in a few cases, how many times that a 4th entry actually surpass the 3rd? Regardless of a movie or game *usually the ones that fail is because the developers weren't involved, like wrath of cortex, enter the dragonfly just to name a few 4th entries that crashed and burn* then we have some that does surpass with flying colors *mega man 4, X4, metroid fusion at least to me anyways 🙂* I find the fourth game problem being more interesting that the typical 3rd game and done *it's not that 3 is the magic number, but I would like to see how they can expand in some franchises* well done to you j 🙂 and this may seem like an unrelated question *though it is from insomniac* what are your thoughts on the resistance trilogy? If you've ever played them.

    I also love this game, as I found it to be a very welcome change-of-pace compared to the platforming aspects of 2 and 3, while also having an interesting and engaging story.
    It knows what it wants to be, and in my mind it *excels* at that. It's also the perfect length too, having just enough variety and gimmicks whilst not dragging on too long or over-repeating that variety to the point of banality. It's a massive shame Insomniac doesn't think too highly of this gem, though; it's different, sure, but that doesn't mean it's awful.
    Also, despite that, I do like how Dallas and Juanita weren't forgotten; regardless of the 2016 reboot's quality, it did feature these two, which was honestly surprising. I guess Deadlocked hasn't been totally left in the past, which is good; I just hope that if a R&C remake series is done, that Deadlocked is also included in that, as it definitely deserves to be.

    This was my intro to Ratchet and Clank. And I loved it. I'm willing to bet that part of the reason this game didn't sell as well as previous entries is the marketing. I remember seeing commercials everywhere for the first three Ratchet and Clank games, and I'd never heard of Deadlocked at all until I saw it on a shelf at the store. Also, the fact that they dropped the naming conventions from the previous entries probably made most people think this is a spinoff or something.

    I just beat A Crack in Time about 36 hours ago, and before you going to do reviews to Future Saga, one thing that you shouldn't forget to mention that weapons can be upgraded durning the boss battles. Meaning, one shot to boss with Negotiator will gain a little bit of XP for that weapon. When in older games, you should destroy boss with only one weapon, like common enemies to gain XP. And even worse, do not get any weapon XP from boss whatsoever!

    Great review man.
    Question, what did you use to record the footage? This footage is super smooth and fluid, I've been wanting to review this and many other PS2 games but my Elgato HD (the og one), captures the games at 30fps no matter what settings I use, and the quality isn't nearly as good as yours is here. It looks authentically captured off real hardware and not emulated, which is what I go for in my videos. I typically review older PC games, but for those I have an older PC and a mircomsoft Xcapture device to directly record the footage from the PC.
    Any help would be immensely appreciated! I'll also give you credit in my Ratchet videos whenever I make them, I've been wanting to do a Ratchet video for YEARS.

    • @JsReviews
      @JsReviews  Před 2 lety +1

      Well, if it's the OG elgato, I am pretty sure it can't do 1080 60, if you want to record 60fps on that thing it has to be 720p. The quality of the footage is because I had indeed played on a PS2 with component video going into something called an Open Source Scan Converter, which allows for a good upscale, however this device is not natively compatible with the Elgato, I needed to use my XRGB Mini Framemeister (not sure if they still make those) as a passthrough. So it would be PS2 component, going to the OSSC, going to the XRGB through HDMI, and the XRGB to the Elgato via HDMI. But I use Elgato stuff anymore, so I don't have that issue currently.

    • @RetroDeathReviews666
      @RetroDeathReviews666 Před 2 lety

      @@JsReviews Wow, much more in depth reply than I was expecting. Thanks a ton, I'll look into it some more! Hugely appreciated. :D
      And I use an og Elgato, but it's being used on a CRT (looks much better for certain ps2 games, and all ps1 games), so I use component cables from the TV, to some splitters that go into the elgato, to the computer. It's supposed to record the 480 res at 60, and I even have 60fps checked in the game capture app. So it *should* be fine but it just doesn't record at that no matter what I do. So whatever you do for yours, I'm gonna give a shot and hope that works.
