We Bought The Cheapest MTB Tyres From Amazon | Cheap Vs Expensive

  • Tires are what connect you to the ground. They're the intermediary between the input that you put into the bike and the ground, so you want something that is going to work well for the conditions, surface and obstacles, right? Big-brand modern mountain bike tyres have a lot of research and development into tread patterns, rubber compounds, sidewall technology and tubeless compatibility, all designed to give you grip where you need it on the trail. But, with that, comes a substantial price tag. Will we have as good a time on the bike if we threw caution to the wind and instead, use the cheapest ones we could find online?

I do take your point about the risks of skimping on tyres, but I think the results of this comparison were always going to be obvious, especially as you are also comparing tyres and tubes to a tubeless setup. As Vittoria is a sponsor of GMBN Tech. It does look a bit like an infomercial to me.

I was thinking the same thing. I generally hold GCN/GMBN budget "comparisons" with a pretty big grain of salt. I honestly prefer to go to the smaller CZcams channels (the ones who actually have to pay for all the stuff themselves) for reviews on more modestly priced bike gear. 🤷

@@komoonkh Doesn't make the video any less biased. That being said; anyone could swap Vittoria for Maxxis or any other quality tire and likely get the same results when comparing them to Baldy's Brown Walls. Huge difference between casual riding ona flat paved surface on cheap tires that simply need to contact the ground and mvoe you vs a dedicated MTB tire that is readily used on downhill or technical trails. If you are an avid MTB rider and use the bike for what it was intended and want "cheap" look for discounts or sales and go with the cheapest quality tire and don't skimp (you don't need to buy the most expensive either).

    • @uberfu
      @uberfu Před 7 měsíci

Also riding conditions matter - are you racing? or just riding because you love riding? If racing then yes high tier tires are likely better suited - if you're just hitting trails on the weekends and your spare time then you don't need the Cadillac unless you have tons of throwaway money or don't care about price. But again if you're simply riding on the sidewalk to little Billy's house and back maybe the Baldy Browns might be fine for you.

I think it should be made more apparent that GMBN is supported/sponsored by Vittoria in this video. It should be clear that GMBN are likely compensated for saying positive things about Vittoria.
I know that from an entertainment perspective it's great fun to see how cheaply you can find a tyre pair. But using unmatched tyres with totally different compounds, tread patterns and widths doesn't seem like a fair test. I understand that smaller tyre manufacturers are unlikely to be able to supply as wide a range of spec offerings including the lack of tubeless compatibility and it's good that you've mentioned this because it is relevant, but you haven't exactly given them a level playing field to begin with.
Why not pick a bike that uses two equally sized wheels if you want to test these particular tyres fairly. Many tyres will perform best when paired together rather than using a totally different tyre on the front vs rear. Alternatively changing the theme of the video slightly you could have spent slightly more money on tyres from a manufacturer like Vee or Onza perhaps who would have been able to supply you with a tubeless tyre in your given size spec.
Lastly I think it's a bit disappointing that this test is based entirely on anecdotal evidence. You mentioned that you're running 19.5 psi in the rear amazon tyre, and then you list the manufacturers recommend pressures for the front but don't say what you're actually using. We don't even know comparatively low long it took you to get down that trail on the Vittoria's vs the Amazon tyres. Would it also not have been possible to compare these tyres in various conditions rather than one short trail? All we're presented with is a few comments suggesting the tyre slides out which could just as easily be down to line choice as it could be poor tyres.
My point really is just that this video doesn't feel very well thought out or transparent for your viewers. It's a sales pitch for Vittoria hidden behind a sudo-scientific test and it's a bit disappointing.

Most good tyres are a bit expensive, you can go as low as 40 dollars or euros, sometimes less for DH tires with super sticky rubber, which you would wear out after a few rides, so generally it´s not worth buying cheap tyres, either you get horrible carcasses and rubber, inconsistent tread pattern, or faulty products, it´s best to spend between 40 and 80 dollars/euros and get something nice, any brand will do honestly, these days technology has improved so much, personally i have tried many brands, with Continental and WTB being my favs, Maxxis, Schwalbe, Michelin are also top notch as long as you only use the DHF on the rear (washes out on the front) and I run tubes with tough casings and tyre inserts, never gotten a puncture, even without inserts, that is just personal preference. I learned that rubber only really makes a difference when it comes to wet roots and rock slides, so I would prioritize tread pattern and sidewall stability over that, hence why I like WTB vigilantes so much, they last longer than Maxxis and offer similar grip at a reasonable price. I ride Enduro/ downhill trails with loose conditions all year round and rocky and muddy are there too. Hope this helps

Now If you only ride gravel roads at a slow pace then yeah any tyre will do, but you do have to deal with punctures, most of my punctures were because of sharp rocks on landings and spines from plants on XC tires

I've has REALLY good fortune with Kenda tires. I'm running a Hell Diver Pro 2.4 on the rear for a little less rolling resistance (it's a semi-slick), but it really performs well, especially in the corners! The carcass is at least as strong as a Maxis EXO+, but probably closer to the Double Down. At less than 800 grams and less than $50; I couldn't be happier.

obviously they are no mazza and wouldn't do for enduro but i just got a 2.4 maxxis ardent for £27, to do a test on my bike as all the 29er tyres i had where too big for what i wanted to test. hunt around for deals and you can at least get a good brand and tubeless for that sort of money

Those tires are more for the what we call posers you see them round town on there mtb but ya never see them on the actual trails. And that's cool but they don't really need a high end tire. The concrete they mostly ride on is going to eat them up fast so cheap is the way to go.
Great vid. Little gutsy taking those tires actually on a class rated trail.

#askGMBNTech Thinking about my previous comment... How about doing a similar test.. .but only run a cheap tyre on the rear (or a balding tyre) and see how much that slows you down.
(Personally I find I feel more comfortable with a worn rear rather than new... I swap my front Minion to the rear when replacing the front.

Where is Blake and doddy? I think this comparison could have been a lot more stark if the side knobs were ever used in the trail comparison. The rider did not corner the bike hard and went offline lots on a mellow trail. I have watched gmbn for years and love the high quality content and I think the riding needs to match the enduro nature of the tire. Still a good video but would love to see it re done with Blake or doddy who are way more aggressive and pushing the limit of the tire.

Dont do the cheapest of the cheap. Obviously that always sucks. But tires at or around the mid price point is where you might actually find a decent tire.
