    I did the same and the water just collected on the bottom. Didn’t do well on the water drainage. So I repotted again and took out the poly bag this time. The trick is to remove the bottom plastic. You can just slit the sides.

    You forgot about NOT over watering! You only water when you see the leaves actually “drooping”, then water pot until you see water coming outside the bottom of the pot! Over watering is one of the biggest killers of this plant! They like lots of sun! A minimum of 6 hours a day of full sun!

    My potted plant in a 7" pot, gets loads of sun, but wilts every couple of days, so it gets watered frequently, because of it. Will i kill it that way? If I ignore when it wilts, it may not come back.

    Please help. My bracts look a bit transparent right after they open and then the tips turn brown. Have you had this problem? She is in a plastic well draining pot. She is not root bound. She blooms profusely so watering is good. I only fertilize about every 2 months as recommended on my special Bougainvillea food.

    I don't think that here in the US that you can find plants in bags that can be so easily cut. I received my bouganvillea (Bengal with variegated leaves)through the mail and had to be very careful and they are thriving. It's been a few months so no blooms yet. Thanks for this info and posting.

    The right way to do it? what a nonsense. they are one the hardiest plants around. You can stick a branch in the ground and it will grow in a few weeks. I wouldn't be too worried about those feeder roots, they'll grow right back at ya

    I just purchased a bougainvillea but it came in a plastic hanging pot. There is no bag How do I safely transfer it to a big pot? Thank you

    • @cjboac9864
      @cjboac9864 Před 3 lety +2

      Carefully take it with the soil in the hanging plant out & put the plant in the new pot with pebbles in bottom & a good layer of soil. Put potting soil in around it, tamp down, mix fertilizer 3,4,5 in water & pour that in. Put it in a place where it will get at least 6 full hours of sun & let it go. Putting in a little B1 mixed with the fertilizer water will help with transplant shock. Before removing it from the old pot, water it “slightly “ to help adhere the dirt to the plant! If it starts looking “icky” the next day, just leave it be. It will gradually adjust! Do NOT overwater your plant, that’s usually the biggest killer & remember it needs plenty of sunshine! Good luck!😍

    • @aussiebushgirl1829
      @aussiebushgirl1829 Před 7 lety +2

      The same rule applies. Remove the lip of the pot. Make long slits around the pot. Carefully remove the base of the plastic pot. Look for smaller plants in 6" pots as they handle transfer much better. Don't use a heavy peat-based potting mix! Peat retains moisture and will cause root rot in your plant if the soil doesn't drain well.

  • @ameliarose727

    Wish I had seen this video before I re-potted a bougainvillea my mother gave me. The lower half of the soil fell off, taking lots of lower roots off too when I eased it out of its original pot. Now my plant is looking sad and the leaves are going wavy. Hope it will spring back eventually.

  • @nathect
    @nathect Před 3 lety

    I don't agree with you in not removing the plastic bag not only for the plant, but for all living organisms. If roots can't be disturbed a little, how do bonsai specimens survive when roots are heavily disturbed and cut? On the other hand it isn't right to mix plastics with growing medium as it is a contaminant. Although Bougainvilleas aren't edible for humans or animals if it is composted, plastics may end in the food chain and cause diseases like cancer in humans and harm other animals. There is scientific evidence of this, like a study done on Mexico in a small rural community. I haven't read of recent studies in humans, but we already have plastic contamination in our bodies from plastic bottles.
