Who thinks Nick should make a ‘Pointless Journey’ theme tune?
Me
Me!
me
He should sing it 😂
If I had virtually any musical talent, I'd give it a shot 😂
Unfortunately I am not so lucky.
Just found your channel and can I thank you for having human written subtitles. I’m deaf and they make the world of difference and the videos much more enjoyable.
Same
I'm hard hearing (auditory processing disorder) and autistic so its really awesome seeing subtitles on the videos
You should do Ormskirk to Ormskirk but go via a route different to the one you've just done on the Kirkby route. Or even Hunts Cross (Northern) to Hunts Cross (Merseyrail), but without just switching services at Liverpool South Parkway or just running into Liverpool Central and switching to Lime Street as that would be too easy.
I was literally coming onto the comments to suggest Ormskirk-Ormskirk 😂
@@ginzy123 I was looking at the Manchester termini as they each have a link to the Metrolink tram network, but all of the routes that I've looked at are too simple and wouldn't make for a good video IMO. One I found that would potentially make for a good video is Manchester Airport (mainline) to Manchester Airport (Tram) going via Manchester Piccadilly, Stockport and Altrincham on the mainline services, then switching onto the tram network, going Altrincham - Trafford Bar/Cornbrook - Manchester Airport.
How about Burscough Bridge to Burscough Junction, but doubled up as a JenOnTheMove style race
One does Burscough Bridge - Southport - Sandhills - Ormskirk - Burscough Junction
The other does Burscough Bridge - Wigan - Bolton - Preston - Burscough Junction
I wonder if buying a ticket from Glasgow Queen Street to Glasgow Central would result in it being "Glasgow Stations to Glasgow Stations". I must try that one day. There is of course the free bus between the two stations for ticket holders. Lovely film by the way.
When you are down in London, you could do Stratford International to Stratford (not via DLR, or you could go Stratford International Mainline to DLR)... Easy way would be via King's X/St Pancras, or you could go a more interesting way via Kent!
I love train journeys, they're just the best feeling in the world when it comes to travel.
I had the same issue just missing the train at Kirkdale. If you alight at Walton then walk the very short distance to Rice Lane then you avoid missing the connection.
EYY NEW VIDEO! I think you’d be the next Geoff Marshall. You are the best CZcamsr I’ve found in a while!
Seeing the "Eurovision 2023" logos on the 777s is ridiculously exciting.
What a fantastic channel and series to stumble across! Just gonna watch every single pointless journey you've done...
Like between Preston and Ormskirk was once double track throughout.
I've had an idea for a pointless journey, as well as a way to do it without Underground/walking. Walthamstow Central to Walthamstow Queens Road. From Walthamstow Central, take London Overground to Liverpool Street, then take Greater Anglia to Stratford. London Overground again to Gospel Oak and then change at Gospel Oak for the one towards Walthamstow Queens Road.
A slightly quicker, but also much less frequent (basically peak hours or engineering works) option would be to take C2C from Liverpool Street/Stratford to Barking and then get the London Overground from there to Walthamstow Queens Road.
I came across this quirk of the network by accident last year. I was travelling between Blackpool to Liverpool but there was problems at Lime Street. So I found this route Preston to get to Liverpool Central instead. I just intend to get off the train and re-platfom on to the Merseyrail. Imagine my suprise as I got off the train walked down the platform past the buffer stops and boarded the waiting Merseyrail on the very same platform. The buffers just seem ridiculous.
This series was recommended by a friend after the Interrail travel planner suggested I needed to spend an hour getting from Kings Cross to St. Pancras. Alas it gave no details other than “by public transport”, though I definitely have enough time to do that for fun. Excellent series, have subscribed.
As always very good video. Keep up the good work, mate 👍
2:04: Well, it's the only train, & if Northern are letting you on the train, then it is going somewhere - they're notorious for not letting people on the train at the terminus until right before departure.
That was a brilliant pointless journey, shame you had to do the first bit by bus. But when you was at Preston, was thinking about how you going to the Blackpool Pointless Journey? Be interesting to find that one out.
I always use Sandhills when changing between the Ormskirk & Kirkby lines, as the connections at Kirkdale are too tight!
Plus it's an island platform which makes it a lot easier.
Have you done Wigan North Western to Wigan Wallgate yet? Literally across the road from each other
Yes my thoughts entirely, when at Wigan Wallgate Nick could have gone to Bolton then Preston then Wigan Northwestern thus doing a pointless jouney within a pointless journey......
My local station! Nice to see you doing a video here :)
Come to Glasgow and do a Glasgow Central High Level to Low Level 'Pointless Journey' would need to get a train all the way out to Newton I think XD
These are great. Love the pointless journeys
The Class 777 Metro trains are so quiet and smooth. Will you be doing Headbolt Lane once it opens later this year.
You have given my life meaning, thank you
Aye Preston! That’s where I’m from. Interesting fact, the ormskirk line is still one of the only ones to require a token. From Much Hoole crossing to Rufford.
Took a ride from Kirkby to Manchester Victoria and back on the final day of service on April 6th. The mini excavator was already in position to demolish the platform extension under the bridge the following day. The platform extension not being that old after it's replacement due to the 507 incident.
I like the 777s, from Central to Kirkby they can get a lick on, and you can feel the acceleration. They are 3 × the power to weight ratio of a 507. 880hp v 2800hp (peak). Should get a good pace up on services to Southport or Chester.
A suitably scruffy PJ. Great video Nick! 🥰
This was great! Keen to see more pointless journeys!
Great video so fun to watch.
Getting thru the backlog. Bloody good....
Was it really quicker to go Wigan - Preston then down to Ormskirk, I would have thought going Wigan - Burscough would have been quicker?
haha I must admit this "pointless" idea is genius!.
Going via Ormskirk, for which another Pointless Journey could have been made between the Merseyrail and Northern platforms
Whenever I come to stay with family, I'm going to one of the little stations between Rainford and Wigan. This means my last change is nearly always Manchester Victoria or Wigan; the train towards Kirkby.
The day you posted this, I was moving in with Mum again. I decided that for once, I was going to try to avoid the Avanti service… I could get a TfW train into Liverpool, Merseyrail to Kirkby, and actually see the western end of that line for once.
Very disappointed that it ended up being a bus (leading to alternate non-rail plans)
Travelling from Lincoln to Westbury this week. Excited to try out GWR. Just a day of EMR, LNER, tube, GWR. Then possibly the next day to Temple meads and onwards to Glastonbury. Day after that back to Lincoln again. Apparently it won’t be an Azuma so that will be interesting
i love hao this video also kinda highlighted the change in service quality's at Ormskirk. northern 1 hours services is due to the Singler track and the Merseyrail one is ever 15 mints and is much better, again amazing video keep this up
Nick, have you seen the "Eurovision Train" yet? .. one of the new trains adorned with eurovison logos! - EDIT! having watched your video I see the logo on the outside of the 777 but you didn't mention this!
Like the comment about the 390 being non refurbished. I hate the new refurb, the seats are uncomfortable, and the forest of head rests really does limit the chance to look out of other windows in the carriage. I'm a big lad, and I couldn't sit comfortably in the window side seat as I couldn't sit centrally in the seat even pushed hard against the side of the train.
I agree - living in the West Midlands, I am sometimes "forced" to use the 390s, and really don't like them; seating that's too close together, headrests that block the (already way too small) windows, just way too claustrophobic - if I travel to London, I use Chiltern (the Class 68 rakes are sublime).
Last week I visited the North East, meaning I got to use the LNER Azuma and... what an improvement; seats with masses of legroom, nice headrests, and DECENT SIZED WINDOWS.
Thats my bike at 7:30 i was thinking i saw you the other day
Maybe you could catch the train leaving in Kirkdale if you got off at Walton and walked across the road to Rice Lane. That’s also a good pointless journey!
I went to Wigan North Western a few weeks ago and saw Flying Scotsman and Royal Scot
this was an awesome pointless journey keep up the awesome work
If you're ever in London you should try and do Catford to Catford Bridge which are two separate national rail stations right next to each other. The easy option would be to go from Catford to Nunhead, Nunhead to Lewisham and then Lewisham to Catford Bridge, so it would be interesting to see if you can do it starting by going southbound from either. This is just one local to me but there are an endless amount of pointless journeys you can do in London.
Catford to Petts Wood
Petts Wood to Lewisham
Lewisham to Catford Bridge
Catford Bridge to Clock House
walk to Kent House
Kent House - Shortlands
Shortlands - Catford
You can get good coffee cheaper than Starbucks.
My experience is -
when you're doing your planning - timetables, etc. - spend a few minutes researching local café options as well (after you know your connection times).
I've found some amazing little local places by making a bit of effort beforehand.
Always remember the saying "the more you put in, the more you get out" of your day.
Looks like you had fun Nick
Haven't been able to scroll through all the messages but another one would be Shotton HL - Shotton LL
Great video
I love how you calls your "first unironic journey on a bus"
The way id have done it is when at Wigan, instead of going to Preston id get on a Northern service to Liverpool Lime Street. Then walk from Lime Street to Central before getting on a Merseyrail service to Kirkby.
So
Someone explain to me again
Northern services will cease completely on the Kirkby line
Or just curtailed to Headbolt Lane?
What I would say Nick is that you're incredibly brave to show your face on CZcams. I wouldn't dare for a good few years 😂
Ah the rail replacement bus service, a service that yes can be a bit pointless in itself but also, having done some filming on buses as well, I do share the frustration about them being shaky and jankly
Is that a word? It is now, I made it up lol
Who else thinks we need a Wigan Wallgate to Wigan North Western pointless journey?
yes, transfer at Ince
He did
Another phone you should do is Lichfield Trent Valley, (High Level) to Lichfield Trent Valley (Low Level), but how about go via Rugby from Birmingham
Liverpool lime street to lime street lower level?
Bradford interchange to foster square?
Meadowhall to the other meadowhall platforms but you can’t go via Sheffield.
Burscough bridge to burscough junction can be fun
Yeah
Hi Nick, really enjoying your videos! I have a great idea for a pointless journey, but it's a long one!
Blaenau Ffestiniog Ffestioniog steam railway station to Blaenau Ffestioniog National Rail station - literally just across the tracks.
Steam railway to Minfordd (or Porthmadog if you don't mind a walk across town), then Cambrian Coast line to Machynlleth and across mid-Wales to Shrewsbury, Borders line to Wrexham, Chester, N Wales coast to Llandudno, and then Conwy Valley line back to Blaenau Ffestiniog. The Ffestiniog Round Robin ticket is amazing value!
Nick's vlogs are awesome 👍💯
Pointless Journey idea:
Charing Cross - Charing Cross (Underground connection)
You filmed this is a rare time
Northern replacement bus to Kirkby and pep on ormskirk
Oooh, a lovely rail replacement bus! 😂
Saw some poor passengers in those instead of 745 FLIRTS on the great eastern main line when I was driving somewhere 😂
Also where did you get the Starbucks? I’m asking
@@tramcrazy Probably the Starbucks a 2 min walk from Preston Station
Another brilliant pointless journeys video. It's a shame you had a rail rep at the start, buses are indeed quite bumpy which I why I always prefer the train.
many moons ago I planned to visit the Ricoh Arena then home to coventry city. Get to Leicester and it’s a dreaded bus to Nuneaton. Cross Country must have been wise to the demand and put on a 12 seat mini bus. Myself and two chinese students were the only customers. they were bound for birmingham. The driver asked where I was going and after Nuneaton where no one got on. dropped me off outside the ticket office 3 hours early.
Suggestion : Take Trains to St Pancras, Grab a Eurostar to France then take a plane back to ANY airport then Newcastle. If it’s too much I’m sorry.
Rail replacement Buses always reminds me of a Lyric from The Wirrals best group (Sorry OMD)
Half Man Half Biscuit National Shite Day released 2008.
"finally managed to reach the station, only to find that the bus replacement service had broken down. After wondering to myself whether or not it should actually be called a train replacement service…”
Loving the pointless journeys videos. You thought about doing Southend Central - Southend Victoria? They’re like 10 min walking distance between them
Could have gone from Wigan North Western to Liverpool Lime Street, then from there to Liverpool Central thence to Kirkby.
Ormskirk to ormskirk via moorfields Liverpool lime street (LL) lime street (main station) via Huyton ,wigan (nw) preston ormskirk. Theres a preston train from lime street to Blackpool/Morecambe hourly
I know it's probably not a pointless trip but at Leeds there's 2 ways to go to York one via Harrogate the long way or via cross gates the short way
Have you ever done Glasgow Central to Glasgow Queen Street? Or Central Upper to Central Lower? Those'd be fun ones if you're ever up north
3:20 Casually goes up the wrong stairs.
You could do anniesland to anniesland ( if your in glasgow) jst go from anniesland into queenstreet low level then up to the main concourse and catch the branchline service to anniesland
Have you done a pointless journey from London Waterloo to London Waterloo East or from London Kings Cross to St Pancras?
You should do southport merseyrail to southport northern
There is a passing loop at Rufford.
How about Reddish South to Reddish North? Tricky given Reddish South only runs one day a week.
How about London Kings Cross to London St. Pancras. 2 separate mainline stations, but they share as underground station.
You should do a pointless journey in london like Hackney downs to Hackney Central or South Tottenham to Seven Sister
Seems very apt having a replacement bus service 😅
Not sure if this will be a pointless journey but would you be able to do Windsor and Elton Central to Windsor and Eton Riverside?
Manchester Victoria (Mainline) - Manchester Victoria (Metrolink)
That coach looked like an ex Stagecoach Megabus vehicle
Pointless journey within a point less journey (its a loop 🤯)
Dorchester South to Dorchester West (but not via Upwey/Weymouth 😁). Could be a long one! At least four counties! 🙂
I am thinking, changing in Southampton, and Westbury
Some more thoughts st Alban's to st Alban's abbey
I thought the line was going to be reconnected at Kirkby to allow an overlap.
You should do Bradford interchange to Bradford foster square by train for your next pointless journey
do London Euston to London Kings Cross (Euston - Edinburgh, then edinburgh to Kings Cross, or if too long, get off at birmingham, get a train to york and then go from there)
the doors at Glasgow queen street are even slower
Please do a pointless journey from piccadilly railway station to piccadilly metrolink station
You should do Thorne North to Thorne South!
Hey I got an idea (for when trams are in Dudley,West Midlands) do Dudley port high level to dudley port low level or Smethwick Galton bridge High level to Low level that's two ideas for you.
Are you going to do a Headbolt Lane Kirkby (Northern) - Headbolt Lane Kirkby (Merseyrail) Pointless Journey Nick?
For some reason I would like to see bourne end to high Wycombe (the long way)
This aged well, perhaps Kirby H’bolt Lane to Kirby H’bolt Lane?
Surely a better way would have been Kirkby (Northern) - Wigan Wallgate - Southport - Sandhills - Kirkby (Merseyrail)? That way, there's no walking between stations in Wigan (although I concede that walking from Wallgate to North-Western is probably quicker than going all the way up to platform 3C at Preston).
so how many stations with KIRK in the name did you pass through or change at today ?
just a quick question......bye the way...LOVE these videos......BUT ...do you ever take any of your "classmates/roommates" with you on your journeys???????
Kirkby will no longer be isolated, as Merseyrail is extending its services to Headbolt Lane.
Hint. Rail replacement buses are notorious for not checking tickets. Free journeys !
