M.U.L.E. | Commodore 64 (1983)

- čas přidán 31. 07. 2024
- M.U.L.E. (Also known as just... MULE), for the Commodore 64, is about four hopeful explorers trying to make a fortune on a fresh planet. This is done by producing various goods (Food, Energy, Smithore, Crystite). Each of these goods have their uses: if you don't have enough food, you will have less time during your turn
If you don't have enough energy, your output will be lower. If enough smithore isn't produced, there will be a shortage of M.U.L.E.s. Crystite is the big earner that can make or break your game

It's a really well designed game from the early 80s putting many of today's triple A games to shame.
I agree with you there, after we figured it out as kids and understood the mechanics - there was literally no other game like it. Admittedly it took a little while to explain to others how to play, but once they 'got it'... it became a game my friends would always knock on my door to come round and play, back when we were kids. Great memories 😇🕹️👌
Bunten was a genius.
I spent HOURS playing 4-player MULE on my Atari 800. I played it on my C64 later. :) I still play it from time to time on VICE or my old C64 with a pi1541 cart. :)
Ah brilliant, makes me smile to know people still play this beauty of a game... I've been training my son how to play but he soon loses interest. Bring back the 80s! All my friends loved it... and I miss those days playing this classic with them 😇🕹👌
The sheer number of hours I spent playing this game is just beyond words. My dad at one point had to make a copy of the game because the orignal disk was wearing out. Plus it was a perfect excuse to test out our 2nd 1541 drive :-)
Ahh brilliant, you'll know more than most then just how brilliant this game actually is 😇🕹👌
This is one I constantly heard about. I saw the cover artwork in magazines from time to time but none of my friends played the game. Seems like we missed out. I did know though that the game has lots of fans. And I tried it later in life but probably didn't give it enough time.
If you have someone who is willing to learn the game with you, its a whole different experience... it becomes really engrossing in 2 player mode. Apparently you could have 4 players on the Atari 2600 version... that would have been amazing back in the day, I bet 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer Four players could play on the C-64, but two of them needed to be hunched near the keyboard. It was doable.
I particularly agree with you on the importance of keeping a ill-fortuned/ill-skilled player into the game, which, in my opinion, has become rare nowadays.
And definitely an intriguing concept. And so avantgarde to top it all!
Was such a unique game, where we'd try to work together - but there was definitely plenty of scheming going on at the same time. Brilliant - no other game gives that sort of sense of accomplishment especially if youc an come out as the victor 😇🕹️👌
The way the good events would happen to the low player and the bad events would happen to the high player was a genius move for sure
I used to load this up and just let the music play while I cleaned my bedroom or worked on other hobbies. What a banger of a theme! Also a board game of MULE was made and it’s pretty faithful to the OG game! Even having rules to hunt the Wumpus! Keep up the great content ❤️
Glad you enjoy this game too, I suppose amongst the community this can be a little like Marmite... you either love it or you hate it. I definitely need to seek out that board game too, sounds awesome 😇🕹️👌
This one, Archon, and The Master of Magic (the solo rpg, not the 4X) had the best music of all time
Definitely one of my all-time favorites. Looking back, I'm kind of surprised that my friends and I could figure out how to play it effectively even as kids -- but we did!
We definitely seemed to have a lot of patience back in the 80s that's for sure 😇🕹👌
Man, I loved this game in the 80s on my C64. It's a true classic!!!
Absolute classic isn't it - so many hours ploughed into this game alongside friends 😇🕹️👌
There is so much nostalgia with retro games but a few really hold up. Mule and Pirates are two of the games that provided an experience I'm unconsciously chasing today in new games.
I'm the same as you to be fair... theres nothing that grabs me quite like the Commodore 64 or Amiga games did... pure nostalgia 😇🕹️👌
I have never played this game before.
HONEST 😹!!
It actually looks awesome 😺👍🕹️.
Even the cover art work reminds me of the old magazines, HEAVY METAL and MAD 😹👍.
Takes a while to get the mechanics of the game but if you can get into it with friends it becomes an instant classic 😇🕹👌
The artwork really had a big impact, putting Electronic Arts on the map as something new and exciting even with their initial "launch" titles.
My friends and myself played this all the time. I got the iOS version as well as a board game of it that came out a few years back.
Ahh nice, yeah I saw that it came out for iOS but I didn't know there was a board game - I'm going to have to get myself one of those and educate the kids about this awesome game, if its the same concept 😇🕹️👌
I played MULE more than 200 times. It is the most intelligent game for a 8-Bit Computer. MULE works on PC-Emulators too. That is nice.
Such a fantastic strategy game isn't it... when you 'get' this game and understand how it works, its just purely awesome to play especially with friends 😇🕹️👌
Each species does not have special abilities as you mentioned. They are mostly for aesthetic. The main influence for them was the player pieces in Monopoly.
Always good to know 😂🕹️👌
I had trays full of disks for my Commodore, but no manuals for most of the games, a code wheel for a game I didn’t have, and this game was part of my C64 mess
I think my main issue with this game, was that I was 11.
I hadn’t thought about this game in 20+ years, Merson was calling anyway, and I liked Questron better. Beat that game, the memories of winning money and fighting town people and guards for being to good at gambling will always hold a place in my heart, but I’m mainly here because I watched some of your other videos, and you seemed like someone I could take seriously.
The point, and somewhere in my fart sniffing word salad, I wanted to see the game again, watch how it’s played.
I think I would have loved this game.
Am glad you found the channel and it sounds like you have fond memories of C64 games. Hopefully the videos bring back some great nostalgic memories 😇🕹👌
Aaaah Questron! One of the absolute best early CRPGs! I just won it again recently and was struck again at how epic the final reward sequence was done once you win, not to mention the tension-racking increasing beat in the final castle battle! Always glad to meet another fan of one of the true greats. I hope you also enjoyed it's true sequel,Legacy of the Ancients. Questron 2 was a poor copy made well after LotA.
Ah, the days when Electronic Arts was still putting out original classics instead of endless franchises. Archon/Archon II got so much play on my C64!
Ahhh yeah the Archon days were particularly memorable. I only had one friend who was really into it, so whenever he came round we'd stick Archon on and play it for hours - there is a little video from Archon on the channel 😇🕹️👌
M.U.L.E. is a game which didn't inspire lots of clones, which is a pity. The basic gameplay concepts could have translated well to a BASIC "de-make" with PETSCII graphics and keyboard input.
One of a kind this game isn't it - super addictive 😇🕹️👌
Oh my word, my friends and I used to have sleep overs and play this game all freaking night long.
Ahh that's awesome. Same with me & my friends too... so many great memories and some pretty epic games too - battling it out for hours sometimes 😇🕹👌
Ah, this is one of those games that is visually unimpressive but if you give it a go and try to understand what's really going on it's actually a lot of fun. I'd play my brother on this all the time back in the day, but he was like a Jedi and always beat me. LOL! After the game loads we would always wait for the entire title sequence to finish: One of the most endearing themes ever for the C64 in my opinion, along with Boulder Dash.
You hit the nail on the head - it's a game that probably won't appeal to many on appearances alone. But to have grown up with this game and really get into it... its a game with classic written all over it. Had many many fun times playing this with my friends on rainy days back when I was a young lad. Great memories... cracking game 😇🕹👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamerI know this game supports 4 players, but I haven't played it literally in 30 years. How are the other two players controlled? Is it via the keyboard I imagine?
It's 25 years later and I still find myself whistling the theme tune. I'm pretty sure I even covered it (along with the theme from Zool) in a "rock" band in highschool.
You didn't mention that MULE Returns is listed on Steam. No release date as of yet.
Yeah its on steam, alas as these videos are evergreen... if I mention it now, then if people watch this in 10 years they'd be like "This man so old, theres been 18 re-releases since this" haha 😇🕹️👌
Lets appreciate the funky music, imagine playing it on a 24h loop
There should be a national M.U.L.E day where the music is played on the radio for 24hrs haha 😇🕹️👌
I never had a chance to play this one, but I know it was a popular title. The way you describe it reminds me of Monopoly in that once you start losing it becomes more difficult to catch up.
Yeah, it's certainly has that element although admittedly it does give favour if you lag far behind and brings you back into the game so it does play fair in places. Again if you're mega far ahead it'll punish you too to balance the game. Love this 😇🕹👌
All time favorite on the 800, I have photos playing it with neighborhood kids
Ahh awesome, some good nostalgic memories 😇🕹👌
M.U.L.E. and Blue Max two best C64 games ever😊
Blue Max also up on the channel but yeah - they are definitely iconic C64 games for sure. Blue Max is still awesome to play 😇🕹️👌
The theme music still kicks after all these years
Kicks like a Mule! Hehe yeah an awesome soundtrack for such an early title - when the SID chip was really getting some beefy soundtracks made on it 😇🕹️👌
Still the best space colony game. Now go back to your tent while I retire to my elegant estate!
Hahah yeah some great comepetitions had with friends where that was the case 😇🕹️👌
Ah. I've used to be quite fond of the PC sorta-remake of this from Linel, Traders. Didn't have that one back when I still had a C64.
Never too late to give it a whirl, still an awesome game 😇🕹️👌
I used to love this game on the NES
It's good to learn how many people actually loved this game 😇🕹👌
I still have my original C-64 copy!
Awesome, keep hold of it! I keep trying to find the original at retro fairs... someday I'll get a copy of it 😇🕹️👌
People claim to love this, but when I was a kid it was pure WTF material. It was almost as disappointing as seeing "QUICKEN" scrawled on a disk sleeve and booting up some tax crap!
I liked the animation on the mule though, and that theme, but then it was like gibberish to a young kid.
It was all about having other players explain to you what the heck to do, or possibly reading about what to do in a magazine if you were particularly sharp.
Here in the USA, you were more likely to know someone with an Atari 400 or 800, and the desire to have the full four player experience meant they were willing to "pull you in" as a player even if it meant teaching you what to do for a while first. (The C64 version was limited to two human players, which meant not as much "demand" for players to play with.)
Its one of those games that can either really grip you and have you absolutely hooked... or turn you off instantly, depending on what styles of games you're into I guess 😇🕹️👌
Ah, the nostalgia....
Such an in-depth and engrossing game 😇🕹️👌
I played that game back then with my friends. We have played m.u.l.e. hundreds of times since, over the years. Even emulated... eMULEated he he.
One thing we figured out was... greed is good. Whenever we cooperated with the computer characters, (NPCs today), the colony failed. But when we played like Gorden Geckos in the market...., the colony did great. Ah... the eighties.
Anybody play the game Autoduel back then? Or Below the Root?
Below The Root is definitely on the list, hopefully be coming in May 😇🕹️👌
ILol this game surely is unique, I played the Nes version of M.U.L.E . in an emulator, and I it was super confusing and I didn't had any idea on what was going on
Once you grasp the mechanics, this game is thoroughly brilliant 😇🕹️👌
Another one I haven't played. But watching the video not one I would if played
Trust me though, it might look overly complicated and even a little basic... but playing this with a group of friends back in the day, we were majorly addicted. It's so in-depth and awesome once you get the mechanics of the game. Classic 😇🕹👌
Just played M.U.L.E. today with RG351MP today as portable version and win tournament against 3 computers😊🎉
That's some achievement! Nice... I'm loving the evercade at the minute playing Uridium. I need to invest in one of those RG135s for other C64 games I think! Helps me pass my lunch hour breaks 😇🕹👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamerThose Anbernic devices are great for older games. Also Analogue pocket is getting C64 FPGA😊
Did you know that the published a Board game of MULE. It is pretty much the computer game and not very exciting ,but you get to hunt the Wumpus.
Yeah I believe so, I'd actually really like to play that - it's just finding some friends who'd be interested... as times have changed since the 80s and I dont think my kids would be able to keep their attention span longer than 5 seconds hehe 😇🕹️👌
Easter Egg at 0:42 "You're landing on the planet Irata"... Irata is Atari in reverse.
Edit: this is mentioned later
Yup 😂🕹👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer the only thing missing in your video is the advanced play with land essays and Crystite.
They were making a remake but backed out at the last second 😢
Ahh man - that sucks, this game could have been made available to the new breed of gamers. But, would they have had the patience that we all had back in the 80s 🤔🕹👌
2:30 The only thing different about the races is that Humans have less money, Flappers more money and the cpu likes the Mechzoid. It would have been better if they DID have different characteristics though imo.
Yeah the flappers were the ones I'd generally play as due to the money making abilities 😇🕹👌
If you're used to playing in PAL, check out the opening music at NTSC speeds. It's a lot quicker in tempo. It's also worth checking out the Atari 8 bit original theme (also NTSC speed). It has 4 voices, vs the 3 voices of the C64 port, and it also has this iconic janky off-tune sound. Unlike the C64, which always had 16 bit pitch, the Atari 8-bit sound chip had 8 bit pitch when using 4 voices. This would be off key in an interesting crunchy way.
Basically, there are two iconic versions of the M.U.L.E. theme (both NTSC tempo). The original Atari 8-bit version has that iconic janky sound, but the C64 version is perhaps more remembered simply because there were so many more C64 players than Atari players.
I'd love to give this a whirl in the Atari.. I have the emulators for that and will probably do what you said over the weekend - the music in this game is great 😇🕹️👌
used to love this game ... now I can barely get going ... but then the c64 emulators suck
Yeah its always playing it on the native machine really, or even the Maxi 😇🕹️👌
I had this but didn't understand it at all. liked the characters though
Hopefully the video explains it a little, but you really have to play it a few times to understand the concept and then, if it all clicks, am sure you'll grow to love this classic 😇🕹👌
your videos are great and informative@@CheekyCommodoreGamer
Where's Wumpus?
Ahh he never appeared this time around but usually appears in the mountains 😇🕹👌
Has anyone played MULE Online?
I haven't yet, but I've seen it on the virtual emulators you can use on the web.. looks cool 😇🕹👍
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer i think he meant the fan remake, not web emulators
