Singaporean Military 24 hour Ration

  • Hi everyone. Today we are looking at a Singaporean military ration. I've had this ration for some time, but due to a few issues with missing components I've held off the review until now. Unfortunately, the seller wasn't clear on this and although I still don't have everything that it should contain (missing a couple of snacks and the stove), the bulk of it is here. In this video, you should get a good idea of what a Singaporean soldier receives. Let me know if you've tried this ration before, either as a member of the military that was issued it, or like me, have purchased one to test.
If this is something you like to see, or you have a passion for the outdoors, shooting, camping and cool bushcraft gear, why not subscribe to the channel.

You are right. When in operation, I would take the dessert as breakfast, plus the beverage powder. I would just empty the powder in my mouth and wash it down with water. We keep the coffee powder for nights when we had to stay awake. Haha😅 The biscuits and fruit bars were great as snacks or light meals when we were moving. The main meals were consumed when we had the time. Usually we just place the meal pouches on the vehicle’s engine hood and come back to eat them after setting up our area. Pocari sweat was a life saver in those conditions.

Thanks for the review! Sharing some of my experiences here from years ago:
    1. If I had seen the insides of my main meal packs, I likely wouldn't have eaten them. The noodles looked ok, the rice looked disgusting.
    2. Turn the biscuits into cakes with a bit of water from your canteen. Some friends pour water into the biscuit packaging and made cake. I just ate them dry.
    3. The cereal bars were the best.
    4. All powdered drinks were consumed as dry powder. Even coffee. I wash down the dry powder with water.
    5. Nobody I knew actually cooked out in the field. It'd just attract ants.

Oh nice review there. Personally back when I was still serving my national service in the army, I would look for the accessory packs that have the butter biscuits, they actually come in 3 types, Chocolate, like the one you ate, plain wheat and butter. As you probably found out from trying it out yourself, it's pretty tough to bite down on hahah. An officer of mine taught me how to turn them into 'spongecakes" by just tearing off one side of the wrapping and while you are holding it, pour some water onto the biscuits so they get soggy and you can just chow down on a clump of them. Though in regards to the fruit bar, most guys in my platoon actually hold off on eating it until the last day of any outfield (field exercises) that we're on, as it is quite common for someone to need to use the bathroom after 4 or 5 days of rations have backed up in the system XD

On the Dessert entree, Nata actually refers to Nata de Coco, which is just jellied coconut water with a pleasant mild sweet taste.
Personally, I usually consume the Dessert as soon as possible, either after either of the main entrees, or on its own, as it's one of the heaviest items in the whole ration pack (unless you're unlucky enough to get a canned drink in the accessories pack). For breakfast, a combination of those biscuits and a fruit bar is more than enough to start out the day with, though it might differ between individuals.

If you have the chance to try the chocolate biscuit again, a ‘pro’ tip we developed along the way to make it tastier. Make a small hole in the bag, pout some plain water in. Give it some time to soak up the water. open up and consume. Viola! you have yourself almost a chocolate sponge cake out in the field. At least its more palatable compare to its original state. Things you experiment out in the field when the going gets tough 🥳

Hey, thanks for trying our rations. Somethings I’ve picked up over my conscription, the food heats up nicely if you leave it on a hot jeep, you can make a pudding out of the biscuits (some of my favourite even in civilian life.) just cut a small hole and fill the bag of biscuits with water, once it rehydrates it becomes sweet, slightly milky and in my opinion, very textually satisfying.
Some of us chew the drink powder with a little water. And we all make the same joke about the apricot bar: it is an intestinal cleanse. One bar and your bowels will be cleaner than it’s ever been.

Fair review. I was in the Singapore army 20+ years ago. Even then i find the ration packs were quite tasty. Maybe only the white rice pack I wasn't too fond of. Everything must have been much tastier now. Poccari sweat was a life saver. I think that's how it got me to become a fervent customer. Hi,
    (1) 20 Deg Celcius is a temperature we in Singapore would beg for. Nice and cooling ! :)
    (2) For the cocoa/plain biscuits of 5 pieces, you can snip away the top portion of the wrapper. Add water. Let it seep for a few seconds. Drain out the water. Then, you will have an improvised "cake". It tastes good and will less likely cause constipation out in the hot fields.

You were asking if the dessert was more suited for breakfast, actually it depends on the individual soldiers. Most would probably have the biscuits with Milo or coffee for breakfast like me. I didnt see any Maggi instant noodles there.. that would be supper for us. Especially at night, when it’s very cold in the early morning, it becomes a cold treat from the usually hot and humid weather.
The main packs makes me wanna go to the toilet often and I try not to eat it if I can help it 😂 As for the biscuits (or dog biscuits as we sometimes call it), it’s really tasty and easy to eat though a bit dry, but I just take sips of water (we need to hydrate anyway) with it. I doubt you know what is horrendous. Even the first MREs issued were pretty good especially compared to cookhouse food in those days where the cookhouse was ran by fellow conscripts and not outside caterers. Let's just say the noodles were dry but stick together more than those you see in the video. As for the veggies, you'd have to be careful not to break your tooths on the grains of sand due to the cooks not caring to wash them properly. The taste? Even the chicken wings tasted like cardboard. The combat rations were maggi mee, tin of diced pork or mutton for muslim, calberg chocolate. hardtag. And you don't get to choose coz that is the only option. Every out camp, it is the same combat ration. Oh ya, you get to choose I forgot, chicken, seafood or curry for the maggi mee and that is it.

Even during my reservist 7 to 12 years ago, the majority of us only ate the dry ration pack + the dessert pack.
The 2 main meal packs were usually thrown away.
It probably tasted better as you warmed up the wet rations before consumption.
While they may have improved since, the wet rations usually have a strong smell that smells artificial or chemical. That smell goes away when the food is heated up. This excludes the dessert pack which is great even at room temperature.

well, in my earlier army days, we were still having canned food which is unfortunately limited in choice and also become an extra weight to carry. those biscuits used to be called dog tack biscuit and is generally disliked by many. however, i think they are kind of good especially when you do not have the time to sit down for a proper meal because those biscuits if you do eat all five of them can certainly last you for awhile. now it is much light weight with these foods and definitely more variety to choose. generally, it is biscuits and milo or coffee for breakfast and noodles or rice for lunch and dinner respectively. i normally skipped the desserts as well as the fig roll. not a fan of sweets.

Nice review 🙂 Though I have to say we'd kill to have 20C weather. At night it goes lowest to about 27C and day time can go up to 34C and with our actual humidity the "Feels Like" temp is 38C which is KILLER in army uniform

Oooh great find! Singapore is a country on my bucket list for visiting. Also I thought nata had to do with coconut, I have seen in Southeast Asia foodie CZcamss “nata de coco” which is a sort of coconut jelly? Anyway didn’t know of the definition you found!
Also Milo 😍 Australian/Singaporean perfection I have like four tins of it that I found at a discount grocery store here in the northish US! (Milo is also the name of our corgi)

Thanks ☺️ Yes I’d like to visit Singapore too. I have a couple of old friends from there and it sounds amazing. The nata was tasty, but as I’d never seen it before I had to look it up.
The Milo hot chocolate was so nice! 🤤 I’m not surprised you bought a lot of it 😁👍🏼 Oh cute little Milo 🐶 I’m sure they are good company for you. I’ve thought about getting a dog, but we are so busy with work, I’d feel bad leaving it alone for long periods. Anyway, have a great weekend my friend 😊👍🏼☀️

Another tip for your Milo , when serve cold top up big spoonful of Milo powder as topping, over here we called it Dinosaur Milo 😉. It’s a match made in heaven , considering our weather condition here as we only have 2 seasons Hot and Hotter ..

Another way to consume Milo. Butter a piece of bread and add a generous sprinkle Milo on it. Fold it up in half and eat. Yummy. Alternative: use condensed milk instead of butter.
