his style and frasefio is so good that meke up for his vocal limitations. Especially in volume and squillo. But all and all, this is the most fulfilling version of this aria I ever heard. Not as a circus but as a meaninful way of delivering.

Bruson é um modelo exemplar aos jovens que pretendem cantar bem, por sua escola genuína e beleza vocal. Este Ernani está entre suas melhores atuações. Verdadeira aula de canto. Bravo !
Bruson may not have had a huge instrument & not having heard him in the theater in a live performance, I cannot make my own judgement there. But it was a beautiful sound & more importantly he had the stylistic & musical qualities that distinguishes him & in my opinion, reveals him to be the greatest of all the Verdi baritones in the final quarter of the 20th Century especially in terms of musical style & interpretive insights. The actual range of his voice on both ends was not that extensive & interpolated high notes were not his speciality. But he could sing virtually any Verdi baritone role THE WAY IT WAS WRITTEN & Verdi I am pretty sure would have revered him highly for his vocal artistry alone. One example & here I am presuming that Bruson made this choice for valid musical/dramatic reasons, occurs in the CORTIGIANI aria from RIGOLETTO. On the word DIFENDE he does not interpolate a high G on the last syllable as most baritones do because this puts a false accent on the final syllable whereas the word accent should if any be on the previous syllable: diFENde NOT difenDE where a high G is often sung. Maybe I am being too picky here but my point is that Bruson honors Verdi‘s intent. Verdi did acquiesce to a tenor‘s request to add a high C in DI QUELLA PIRA as long as it was a good one. But in the case of the CORTIGIANI aria I doubt Verdi would have approved of the high G on difenDE. Besides accenting the wrong syllable it sounds awkward in most baritone voices & really adds nothing to the arias dramatic power. Anyway the high G flat towards the end IS appropriate for musical/dramatic reasons & having it there in the score testifies to this.
@pacificlyric, consider also that the conductor was Muti, whose philosophy was "come scritto". I am sure he would not have allowed any of the traditional interpolations. In this production Ghiaurov did not get to sing the cabaletta either. This Aria is plenty high, and Bruson handles its challenges beautifully.
Bomnus.- I was referring to his upper and lower register. And if you have the entire opera, you can see the difference in volume compared to Freni or Placido. He doesn't take any of the high notes usually sung by other baritones (MacNeal, Warren, etc) even though they are not written in the score. But, again, not important, he is a master!!
Domingo era y es un cantante con voz engolada, corto en el agudo por lo que la voz es desigual. Bruson en su rango técnicamente era infinitamente mejor que Domingo con muchas más variedad en el canto y no un osado que quiere cantar todo sin el mínimo pudor

I remember those mellow tones from his Falstaff in Los Angeles in 1982. Bruson is certainly one of the Great Company.
