  • This is how I made nesting apple boxes. Here is a link to the dimensions I used:
    drive.google.c...
    Although exact dimensions don't really matter. Determine the dimensions of your outer box, then design the smaller boxes to fit inside.
    I used oak ply for my project. It is what I had in stock.

    I try not to comment on peoples videos too much but I winced mightily when you scored the plywood by running it backward. It's really not necessary to run it backward as just having the blade 1/8" high on the first pass should result in a chip free cut most of the time. Plywood chips when the blade is cutting down through the bottom veneer so if you run it straight through (forward) it works fine because the blade is cutting UP into the core of the wood mostly. I've scored hundreds of pieces of wood like this as a cabinet maker and running it backward seems to add an element of danger or miscut that's probably not necessary. A good blade, good saw and a smooth controlled cut through the blade (pushing) should work wonderfully. Anyway back in the cave I go.

  • @woodsmith8439
    @woodsmith8439 Před 3 lety

    Aloha. Curious, do you use all 3/4 for added strength rather than 1/2 on the tops and bottoms? Especially since the full can’t have the middle support. I got an order for nestings and wondered. Also, on the end, I’m thinking of leaving one side full length so the sliding cover bottoms on it, with a magnetic catch.

    • @woodsmith8439
      @woodsmith8439 Před 3 lety

      And by doing so, your full has to be over 8” deep to fit a 4”, 2”, and 1” set.

    • @grizzlephotovideo
      @grizzlephotovideo Před 3 lety

      I used 3/4 on all of them mainly because it is what I had. I think you could get away with 3/4 for the big box, and 1/2 for the smaller boxes.

    • @woodsmith8439
      @woodsmith8439 Před 3 lety

      @@grizzlephotovideo thanks for getting back.I’m building several sets now, and they want the correct heights, 8, 4, 2, and 1. Can’t use 3/4 cause 7” won’t fit, so I’m going with 1/2 Baltic birch for strength. The customer understands there’s no middle brace and they’re fine with it. Stay safe...

    As a professional film grip, there are exact dimensions and unfortunately these are not it. Also how would you carry this with one hand? You put a handle on it but it seems it’s only there for esthetic reasons and not for actual functionality.

    • @grizzlephotovideo
      @grizzlephotovideo Před 6 lety +4

      A2Z Geek I understand that the dimensions may not be exact for film professionals. But for many non film pros, smaller storage space is a greater benefit than exact pro dimensions. I know it is for me. I agree you can’t carry this with one hand while nested but you can when it is not nested and it still provides good finger holds for both hands when it is nested.

      Thank you. I don’t know why these “craftsmen” think they can improve a design that’s been basically unchanged for a hundred years or more. I think I hate it even more when they try to make combo apple boxes, storage boxes. Yeah, that will be great when you need to get your hammer or ratchet straps, but the box is busy propping something up. “Hey guys, can you lift the dolly track for a second while I get my hammer?”
      I tell people who want to make a storage box/apple box combo to just make a frikkin storage box for their shit and an apple box so they have a place to put the storage box.

    Hey Jeremy,
    Nice video. You might want to countersink a little magnet on the sliding top to prevent it from sliding inadvertently.
    As a Key Grip who has been in the business for more than 25 years - www.imdb.com/name/nm1339894/ I can tell you that although the standard sizes are important, these can prove very useful for a smaller package to have in addition to regular boxes. The small storage footprint is a winner.

    • @JoelFriedline
      @JoelFriedline Před 3 lety +1

      Sanjay, you say that the standard sizes are important. Is there more to apple boxes that we don't know? I'd love to hear about some of the things that make the current standards for apple boxes so important, or how the industry has adapted to the standards.

    • @sanjaysami4315
      @sanjaysami4315 Před 3 lety

      Joel Friedline - 8, 4, 2, 1 inch are the standard sizes. 8 inches corresponds to a standard step height and the others are a half, quarter amd eighth

    So none of the fractional boxes have dimensions that bear any relation to the full apple? Either the full apple is too big or (if it is the correct size) the half apples and quarter apples are too small. Y’all realize that “nesting” boxes are at cross purposes with the modularity, right?
    What if we had nesting legos, but legos didn’t fit. Wow, they nest! But they’re useless as legos. Same deal as these apple boxes. Why do people have to “improve” something that doesn’t need to be improved.

    • @grizzlephotovideo
      @grizzlephotovideo Před rokem

      I wasn't trying to improve upon anything. To me, being able to more easily store them away or travel with them was more important than modularity since I rarely use them that way.
