  • How I made a full set of Apple Boxes out of a single sheet of plywood.
If you've seen any Behind-the-Scenes documentaries from your favorite movies, then you've probably seen the cast and crew using apple boxes.
Apple Boxes are some of the most versatile and useful tools for filmmakers and photographers. They can be used to raise up a piece of set dressing to the perfect height, make an actor appear taller, create a level surface for dolly tracks or light stands, or even as a quick seat for crew members.
You can make a full set of Apple Boxes (A Full, Half, Quarter, and a "Pancake") out of one sheet of plywood with plenty of leftovers.
    Dimensions for each:
    FULL APPLE: 20"x12"x8"
    HALF APPLE: 20"x12"x4"
    QUARTER APPLE: 20"x12"x2"
    PANCAKE: 20"x12"x1"
Using a full set of apple boxes, you can raise objects in 1 inch increments all the way up to over 2 feet!
Here I used 1/2 inch plywood to make them lightweight, but you could totally use 3/4 inch for even more heft. I'm going to use these mostly in my shop for light applications, so I'm comfortable with 1/2 inch material.

When I worked in auto photography we used to make apple boxes out of ¾” plywood but put a cross brace in the middle instead of the single panel. They were strengthened like this to raise cars to get better angles. I personally raised a car two and a half (8 + 4) apple boxes high, but have seen others raise them four boxes high, which was nerve wracking.

Thanks for the tips! What type of plywood thickness do you recommend? 15mm or 18mm? How thick are the Mathews?

Very cool video - I would not have thought about the middle brace on the full apple - thank you!

Good job. I’ve been using lumber core for the center braces on my fulls. My rental customer is all about the weight..

Cool! Any particular reason you cut handles into the support beam inside the full-apple?

Totally! I've seen a full apple used for so many different things, sometimes grips will run speed rail, strapping or other things through a full apple. Sometimes I've seen them stand on end (NY position) and be used as a base or holder for boom poles. Even though i probably won't use it for those purposes most of the time, I'd rather have that ability than not
