    That's a lot bigger than we do! ONE man can load and operate. It just takes a little bit longer. Good video I learned a few steps I can take.,👍 awesome video!!

    Thanks for the seed process tour. Unlike other crops, like corn, there are many steps required to obtain the needed seed size.

    Really interesting. I've never seen the process of growing potatoes before. I'm familiar with row crop farming, but this is totally different. I'm ready for some planting videos!

    This is a very interesting process, as a row crop farmer I never really knew what type of machine potato farmers used to cut seed or all that's involved.. Good Luck with your crops this year.

    This was very interesting! Why don’t you use your own potatoes as seed as opposed to buying them from another grower?

    • @RockyMountainFarmer
      @RockyMountainFarmer  Před 4 měsíci +2

      I’m glad you enjoyed it. We plant 4th generation potatoes and harvest 5th generation potatoes. If we plant 5th generation potatoes there is an increased risk of disease.

    • @tombache3426
      @tombache3426 Před 4 měsíci

      So I gather you are planting from a previous generation? Like 2 years behind?

    • @RockyMountainFarmer
      @RockyMountainFarmer  Před 4 měsíci

      We buy 4th generation from a seed grower. That’s what everyone does.

      @@RockyMountainFarmer First, thank you for the vids, as someone far removed from farmland, it's incredibly interesting to see where my food comes from (and there's nothing better than a fine baked potato). Second, I'm confused about the generations and hope you can explain. I presume the original potatoes were the 1st generation, then the crop grown from seeds made from them would be the 2nd and so on - but what I don't understand is how can any potato be only 4th generation given we been farming them for over a century in your area and for millennia throughout the world? I presume I'm just misunderstanding generations in farming terms and would appreciate your clearing that up for me. Thanks.

    That is very interesting. Is it true that a seed potato has to have an eye on it to come up?

    • @RockyMountainFarmer
      @RockyMountainFarmer  Před 5 měsíci

      Yes you need an eye. That’s why it’s nice when the seed is small.

    Interesting!
    Does the potato grow better after you cut it or would it be better if all seed potatoes were golfball size from the begining?
    Best regards from Sweden 👍

    • @RockyMountainFarmer
      @RockyMountainFarmer  Před 5 měsíci +1

      It will grow the same. Either way you just have to make sure that each piece has at least one eye on it. cutting it is just to make sure we get the right size.

    Can you use last year's potatoes to use as seed? Or it's just like canola and soybeans that you can't use the previous year's crop as next year's seed.

    • @RockyMountainFarmer
      @RockyMountainFarmer  Před 11 dny

      You could grow potatoes with your own potatoes, but potatoes are actually grown in generations so we plant the fourth generation and we harvest the fifth generation, the more generations you go down the road it’s harder to certify them and get them to a good quality

    How do you know how much to cut and pile?

    • @RockyMountainFarmer
      @RockyMountainFarmer  Před 4 měsíci

      We know how many sacks we want to plant per acre and how many acres and one sack is 100 pounds so we know how many pounds to get.

      Oh gotcha I must have been confused. Now that you say that I do remember that. That’s the hard thing about filming. I’m going off memory and there is no script. We put the starter fertilizer on when we plant.
