Good call on spraying off the motor first. I've recently started doing this on any maintenance activity that I do on my bikes. It just makes everything easier when you don't have dirt falling into your work area, contaminating grease, oil, fittings, bearings etc...
you can do something for yourself a 100 times and the first time you do it to help a friend or family member its nothing but problems. good feeling to know its not anything you did yourself but.
