Washington also had a slave as a cook by the name of Hercules who was regarded as the best chef in North America who also escaped from the presidential house in Philadelphia to Canada. Washington sent emissaries to Canada to ask Hercules to return but he never looked back and remained in Canada. Are these founders of America my heroes, they declared their freedom from the British as free men while owning slaves and not extending those same freedoms that they shed blood for to the people that they saw as property. America is my home and my ancestors built it with their blood sweat and tears but these men who sought freedom while denying freedom to others are not MY heroes. The enlightened few who saw that slavery was wrong I thank with all my heart but their message was wasted on their brethren who all sought financial gain over moral dignity.

@Spooky Moo explain when selling them was just the beginning the purchase of a person means mistreatment now they could have helped them live a better life after being sold by what you call the "meanest black slave traders" so cut the shit it was far too many to blame over the years for slavery mentioning African slaves from other tribes not belonging to their own isn't a pass for anything that happened once they reached America

Not saying it didn't happen trading was a rich job, don't know if white traders would have allowed this unless the black trader worked for them. Then I could be wrong. Some people like to feel better, more powerful then others, bullying, so why not the black trader esspecially since he never wanted to be on the receiving end of what he did. Slavery was and is evil no matter who has the whip.

And he also late in life disavode slaver and his slavers were freed. He was born in a time of slavery, not just black slaves, but other races as well. And it's true that blacks in many parts of the world has slaves, so was not just an American thing. There are countries today that still practice slavery. George W was a great man who saw challenges as well. In the end like many he saw blacks as people who should not be owned. Viewing history from the 21st century is very flawed. It was a difficult and challenging time back then and it's likely we would not be a country today without his many sacrifices.

She had a dower portion, a third of the estate with her children splitting the other two thirds. Though she, as the only adult, had the duty to manage the holdings, she had no legal right to sell significant property or emancipate the slaves that she only owned a minority share of. Did you know that slavery dates back to biblical times from noahs curse upon his own child? It did not originate in America. Was practiced throughout the world during that era in time and was abolished in america in less than a century after gaining independence. Did you know that the enslaved were captured from villages by their own countrymen (also black) and sold to Caucasians? Did you know that slavery still exists in other countries today.. again..blacks owning both blacks and whites...? Its a fact. It was wrong then and its wrong now. But lets stick to the facts. Its not about skin color. Thank God America did the right thing and has made so much progress. But lets not blame and shame our founders who were doing what everyone else around the world was also doing and many still do. They were not alone in it and they DID change it. And pkease dont forget that the enslaved were not the only ones done wrong either. My cherokee and huron ancestors were too. I'm proud of my ancestors. And proud that so many fought and died for freedom for ALL Americans.

John Lysic You are looking at this with 21st century morals. Can’t judge 18th Century practices that way because they hadn’t yet come to understand it as a horrible practice.
It was not uncommon for slaves to have more cash than their masters because American farming was very much a barter economy. England just wanted the colonies to produce wealth for England. Plantation owners under British rule would not have had enough money to pay workers if they were freed. Washington tried to sell some farms, free his slaves who worked them and have them paid as freemen by the new owners. No one liked the idea.
Had there been no Civil War many slaves would have been voluntarily freed/fired because mechanized farming implements would make them unnecessary. But the immediate loss of all farm workers meant that they needed to be employed or else the farmer could not grow and harvest a crop and would lose his land to the tax man.

Lets be clear about this Ona was a dower slave, a property of the Custis estate. Martha reportedly treated her as a daughter as far as slave laws allowed. Virginia forbade slaves learning to read and Ona desperately wanted to. She was more of a companion to Mrs Washington than a worker. I don’t blame her for leaving, especially after seeing the freedoms that non enslaved blacks enjoyed. But she definitely was not one of those slaves who worked the plantation.
It might be pointed out that Washington’s personal servant, Billy Lee, cried when the former president died. He must not have been too bad to work for.
