  • Abide With Me
    Abide with me, fast falls the eventide.
    The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
    When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
    Help of the helpless, O abide with me.
    I need Thy presence ev'ry passing hour;
    What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's pow'r?
    Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
    Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.
    Come not in terrors as the King of kings,
    But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings;
    Tears for all woes, a heart for ev'ry plea.
    Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.
    Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
    Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
    Change and decay in all around I see;
    O Thou who changest not, abide with me.
    I fear no foe with Thee at hand to bless;
    Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness.
    Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
    I triumph still if Thou abide with me!
    Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
    Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies.
    Heav'n's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
    In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

    My family sang this hymn several years ago at both my grandmother's and grandfather's funerals. Even today, when we sing it in church, I can only mouth the words because I still get emotional and can't make a sound. I miss them very much :( But it's a comfort too, because I know they are with their Savior in heaven!

    I have been the crucifer at maney funerals at my church. At the end of every funeral, when we are outside, we sing the first and last verse of this song. I have watched husbands, wives, sons, daughters, family, and frends sing this song before the decesed is buried. I have yet to see a time when it is sung without someone stoping.

    I also played this along with God Loves me dearly to my dad during his last days at hospice. It was so peaceful to hear this at 7:30am in hospice by my dad's side. Thank you.
