      Yeah I practice that by just,,, pushing it waaaaay to far over and over. I do a drawing where I say, "Anatomy is dead and I am God in this world. break a leg? Well she sure looks like she took it literally!!" And then after I'm done I suck it up and do one with a direct reference and do the whole Anatomy Perfection(TM) thing and it takes me like an hour and it's still stiff but then I repeat the process over and over and they're starting to both look better?? And then I try to make something really cool and it looks a hella lot better!!! So yeah I still suck at it too but I'm getting awesome ass results from practicing the extremes and it's fun to practice this way! You really get to f around and draw a buncha different things. Foreshortening? Now that's of the devil, son. We dont talk about that in this house. Not in my good Christian Minecraft Server.

      I totally get what you're trying to say, but what schools are trying to achieve with tests and exams without letting students look at references is to measure how much materials have students memorized/understood. The major flaw in such a system is that students are only really motivated to memorize when they have those tests and would promptly forget about it after, making the entire effort done for almost nothing.

      I don’t really agree with that. In my respectful opinion, I think that kids are smart enough to differentiate between using references and cheating on a test. They aren’t copying an answer, but an image. Or at least that’s how I see how because that’s how it was for me

    • @mateusztomaszek4921
      @mateusztomaszek4921 Před 4 lety +54

      My school encouraged using things as references like my art teacher 3 years ago forced everyone to create a pinterest account so we could go through it and get inspiration and find artists we like. We had to replicate a piece of work by a chosen artist and then create something new with that same style. Doing exams and cheating is way different than using references to enhance your work

    Construction is imo the hardest part about drawing, but is definitely the most rewarding once you start getting a hang of it. You can draw in any style and it will look professional as long as it has proper construction (unless the style doesn't call for it ofc). The biggest mistake I did as a beginner (and what a lot of artists did/do) was focusing too much of what was aesthetically pleasing or clean lineart, but never on construction. Really bit me in the ass later and I always stress this to beginners that want to make it into the business. There's a reason why old artists force you to draw boxes in 4 000 different angles!!

    • @MewSakura12
      @MewSakura12 Před 4 lety +78

      Yes this is currently my issue! I care too much about the frosting (nice lineart, nice big anime eyes lmao) but not enough about the ingredients and techniques that make the cake stand and taste good (construction, the fundamentals)
      And then you can’t just draw the box - ya gotta draw it properly in perspective otherwise you’ll be practicing bad habits over and over again till it’s permanent lmao art is hard

But then you got deaf people creating amazing songs so it makes me feel even worse if I use this to throw in the towel. Not heard any helpful advice for getting around it, so could be, there just isn't any. And you gotta memorise every angle of the object/human/animal body as a mental folder of 1000s of snapshots. In short, just keep going, and be ready to put in more effort than other people, I suppose.

The way I want to draw is how animators draw since I really like how flow-y they are. So when it got to the part when you mentioned what makes it easy for animators to animate a character, it just clicked! I've been free-handing everything for a while now that I forgot to 'think', lmao. It's always easy and comfortable for me to draw intuitively but that's only after structured studying. 7:04 Y’know what I learned today..I always thought the opposite no matter how many times an artist explains and I never understood. Now I see that you should NOT work HARD but instead work SMART. Working smart doesn’t make you lazy. The tools, especially on digital are there to help you in a way. I wish I’ve known this sooner instead of saying nah that’s lazy and doing it my way since I love the challenge but working smart is always fast and better if you’re doing a business as well and need swift and smooth outcomes,it benefits your quick learning in the long run.

    I have been trying to teach myself for weeks just by drawing. I got sick of how stiff my characters looked so I bought a $20 lightpad and printed out line art and traced it. Then I would try to redraw the basic shapes while looking at what I traced. Then i would fill in the shapes with minor detail changes and see what transferred from my memory to the page. I felt like a fraud trying to learn this way even when I started to see improvement. This video encouraged me so much and I'm more determined than ever!! Thank you for this

    there's not problem with using a reference or even tracing as long as you give the credits to the owner or if the reference is free to use. Naughtydogs, Warner Bros, Dreamworks and so on use references and trace but they have the rights to do it, they pay for pictures or have a team that takes them. And also you can draw way faster and have better results buy understanding something like you shown in the video instead of tracing it all like Holy Brown use to do. In the end if you only trace you will never get use to draw something on your own and sure It pays the bills and what not but how can an artist feel good about what he/she does when it's all a copy of something. I've traced before but I can care less about that drawing I never posted it since it doesn't have any value to me, it's not my idea, it's not something that I made, it's something that someone else did and I can't just put my name on it to make some quick cash. tracing is a tool to learn and use if necessary but using references instead is like taking out the training wheel of you bike and ride like a real man!

    • @Cyynapse
      @Cyynapse Před 5 lety +43

      yeah no, professional here, you dont have to give credit to a reference

    • @jjj7790
      @jjj7790 Před 5 lety +25

      The only problem with tracing is if it actively gets in the way of you learning how to draw properly (which isn't likely, because tracing can teach you how another artist constructs form). The idea of tracing being bad was invented by young artists who have mistaken being an auteur, with being an artist.
      As a growing artist, putting out a large quantity of work and exploring art is way more important than arguing with people about whether things look "original" or not, or trying to constrain yourself to an "original style".
      If tracing and heavy referencing wasn't covered under fair use, so much of the art community would be under lawsuit. That would mean every art parody and every fan work that every existed would be considered "a problem".
      In the art industry, 90% of the time your job will be to intentionally invoke another person's style, which pretty much forces you to do things like tracing and heavy references. That's how movies, tv shows, video games and comics get made.

    That’s the thing I loved about the Voltron art style. The style was in a way simple where you can find body shapes and break down complex character design and spaces into simple shapes that are nice to look at and study for a noob artist such as myself. When I was creating fanart I was learning a lot but observing. The style is simple in shapes but detailed where it complimented beautifully with the simplicity it had. The style of the show and how characters are designed, characters are animated, and the show over all makes me see hearts ever time I watch it. The show had its own aesthetic that takes my breath every time I re-watch it and reminds me why I love to draw and keeps me going to learn more and become a better artist based off references I have mentally made in the show. .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    the choices made at the end of the show to end the story and how they ended the story made me cringe and mad as hell but art style of the show makes me shake with excitement. What I’m disappointed in is last minute choices made in story telling. But the show still has a special place in my heart.

    Ethan, though I have no formal degree or professional experience, I have been to two unfinished attempts at art school (undiagnosed disability cutting both short; I am on my third attempt with proper help now). I had my figure drawing class in my second attempt with a man who had studied fine arts and moved on to do a master’s degree in Figure Drawing in the USA (I live in Latin America). He taught much the way you do, and I am forever grateful I was taught such important knowledge in this way.
    All you say in these videos is a Yes after Yes for me and brings back wonderful memories of my art skyrocketing in a single year cause I was taught in this manner, and all the epiphanies I had back in that class. You’re doing gods work in a sea of mediocre art education from people who teach mistakes without realizing, or are great artists, but not good at conveying this info, and I feel like I am galaxy braining even more by watching these and refreshing this knowledge. Thanks for your brave service

(Had an abusive family, took my art away, blah blah blah. Been trying to regain that passion I had for art since then.) I have a webtoon now, but have a tough time drawing it because everything feels very stiff and 2D and I didn't know how to improve anymore. Watching your videos though have shown me a path to learning and getting better, and I feel like I can start moving forward again and genuinely up my art. So, thank you.
