Adaptive Tuning Systems competition barrel tuner first impressions

  • I've seen several barrel tuners available over the years but had never tried one because I didn't want to modify my barrel. Along comes Kinetic Security Solutions with the simple to use thread on Adaptive Tuning System (ATS). With reloading supplies hard to come by I wanted to try to tune the barrel to the ammo instead of the other way around. These are my first impressions, raw, uncut. I hope this helps someone else out there.

    This is NOT a paid advertisement, I spent a little over $200 for this tuner. Took about a week to get it as an in-stock item. I'm very happy with this tuner because the load I was shooting to break in my barrels was just thrown together with a powder range of 33.2-33.9g thrown out of an RBCS powder dispenser, unsorted brass, nothing close to a precision round.
    The results were VERY IMPRESSIVE!!! I will be trying this out on other rifles. Why? Because I can, it will thread on to any of my 5/8x24 threaded barrels. They offer a hunter version of this that I want to try now. If you want to check them out here is where you can find them: www.kineticsecuritysolutions....

    This system is the way to go so you don’t have to lose your suppressor

    I just order one can't wait to go and try it. Also in a near future I'll order the EC tuner and compare both and see which one I'll like better or may fall in love will both :) we'll see.

      If you ever got to compare the EC tuner let me know your thoughts between the two.

    Nice shooting! Which muzzle brake is that? Does the muzzle brake thread into the tuner? How exactly is it combined at the end of the barrel ( brake & tuner ). Thanks again! Are the groups still holding tight ? What caliber are you shooting?

      If I didn't say in the video that is a bone stock savage action and barrel. Varmint contour, threaded 5/8. The tuner threads onto the barrel leaving enough threads exposed to also then thread on a brake. Nothing special to use, no special threading, bone stock barrel. The tuner ends up covering about 2 inches of the end of the barrel behind the brake. The brake in the video is a cheapo ebay made in china model, a quick search and you will see several options out there for 25-50 bucks. (if inflation hasn't doubled the price yet) 😞 Hope this helps & yes the groups haven't changed.

    Factory or reload ammunition? Also now that you moved it back to zero, how does it shoot when you moved it back… I’ve like to know if the tuner is repeatable? Thanks for posting.

      @flyingfrog2856  Před 6 měsíci

      We have used both factory and hand loaded ammo. We've been able to change the tuner to a setting for each load and it was very repeatable.

    Need to shoot more groups. One .25 inch group is great, but is it repeatable for 10 or more groups. Larger amount of shot groups will give more reliability. Even as you show a 5 shot group is much larger than the 3 shit groups. Especially for $200.

      This was just one test many moons ago. Absolutely correct on 3,5,or 10 shot groups. 3 shots really don't statistically prove squat, but they got me moving in a direction for fine tuning. Since this video was shot that rifle combo has been to the range quite bit and I've found that the tuner works quite well for tuning different ammo types, brands, and or lots when I'm being to lazy to reload specifically for the rifle. Sometimes it takes more time to tune a load, sometimes it take longer to dial the tuner in. However the tuner has always tightened up the groups for any given load so far. I'm hoping to do some follow up videos on the subject but work is always getting in the way of fun.

    Is rifle still shooting at #18 or you had to make any changes? Thanks in advance. 👍🇨🇦

      Sorry I don't think to check comments very often...CZcams influencer isn't one of my dreams. :-) So far the tuner has not had to change. My understanding is that it will not need to be changed until the lans are worn enough to effect the bullet jump. At that point I can either tune with the seating depth or the tuner.

    You know you could of gotten a tuner and muzzle brake combined with the e-z tuner right?

    • @flyingfrog2856
      @flyingfrog2856  Před rokem

      I've ended up with a few more of these. When I bought them the E-Z tuners were out of stock and I have a few rifles that have JP brakes on them for maximum recoil reduction (and irritation of the guy on the next bench if I'm not careful) I'm planning on trying the e-z because I've had such good luck with these.

    Are these tuners suited to .22lr as well?

    • @flyingfrog2856
      @flyingfrog2856  Před 9 měsíci

      These tuners actually started out in the 22LR competition world and I've used one on a Bergera B-14R CARBON with great success shooting run of the mill ammo in 1/2 inch groups instead of only running expensive match ammo.

    • @flyingfrog2856
      @flyingfrog2856  Před 2 lety

      I should be posting another video after I go to the range this weekend. I'm hoping to test a new load w/123g bullets, I'm hoping I can pick my load (bullet, speed, & seating depth) and tune the barrel to that load. I also plan on seeing how repeatable the settings are if the tuner is taken off and shared between guns. More to come, I'm still very impressed.

    Crap! I just got mine! Doesn't fit my barrel. I ordered the 5/8 x 24 threads, is a little to big! It looks like that I need to order the 1/2 x 28 threads! 😐

    What is the diameter of your barrel?

    • @flyingfrog2856
      @flyingfrog2856  Před 2 lety

      The savage barrel in the video is .764 OD. I'm putting one on my 300PRC that has a 1.063 OD barrel (about 2" behind the threaded shoulder). They have several different sized tuners but not all of them were in stock, that's why I used the competition sized tuner even though the savage only has a varmint sized barrel. I'll be ordering a hunter or slim now that I know how well it works.

      I think we tried these because Erik either hadn't come out yet or weren't available. Our next one will probably be a Cortina made tuner.
